SOUTH AFRICA - Marie Ostbo, 21, Sedgefield, Norwegian student, 18 Apr 2018

I currently live in a highly secure complex with 24 hour security and I live on the 3rd floor. I've also spent the majority of my life acquiring a variety of skills, including, martial arts, weapons training, survival techniques, stunt driving and self-defense and am not one to shy away from danger. If I hadn't, no I would not feel safe as a woman living on my own. I feel secure in my complex with my various training skills but when I lived in the city, I never felt safe.

No no, my theory/feeling is that Marie's disappearance happened fairly soon after the kidnapping case blew up and all the negativity fell on South Africa. Our economy isn't doing well and a massive part of it is reliant on tourism, especially in the Western Cape. So I feel like they've downplayed Marie's story and tried not to draw too much attention to it, which is why it feels very much like a lot has been dismissed, swept under the rug or ignored.

Well, I followed all your training skills until I got to “stunt car driver” and had a twinge of envy. Very well-rounded skills, I’d say! Thanks for the reply.

gotcha now on your theory, and that makes sense from a business perspective. But if SA has such a big tade industry with Norway, I would wish they would be more interested in their tourists’ fates. So frustrating!

Why thank you. I was studying to be an actor and stunt woman at one stage.

I feel the same way.

I heard that Norway wants to launch their own investigation. I hope they do. Maybe then some action will take place or at least, a wake up call.

I’m way too old to be adventurous or daring, but I admire your talents! That’s a lot if fun skills tonhwve experienced. Makes you a very well rounded character, I would imagine, and grest cinversation starters. Not many can too that.

i was hoping to hear Norway would do an investigation. I sure hope they follow up. It may be our only hope.

FINAL POLICE SEARCH TURNS UP NO NEW CLUES FOR MISSING NORWEGIAN STUDENT

CAPE TOWN - There's still no sign of a Norwegian student who disappeared in Sedgefield almost a month ago.

Police conducted another search on Thursday in an attempt to try to locate the 21-year-old.

[...]

The police's Malcolm Poje says they've covered the area extensively and have not been able to find any new clues.

"We went back as part of the debriefing of the initial search, with all the role players, to conduct a final search but we could not find anything. The search yesterday was just a once-off to ensure we cover everything but we could not find Marie."

While doing some digging on drowning statistics, crime waves and missing persons in the area, I came across this article from 2014...

This is what grabbed my gut though...

I can imagine in 4 years things have only gotten worse. (As with most 'safe' beach communities these days, crime takes over because residence are only there when they are on holiday. We had constant break ins in our home in Betty's Bay and eventually sold it because it wasn't worth the worry anymore.)

The fact that there are such people watching and waiting for the perfect moment to strike is hard to ignore.
I'm going to see if I can get in touch with the 'Unofficial Sheriff' to see if he has any insights (if he is still around of course).

Thanks for posting this article. I just read it now. I feel like the police are trying to quickly wash their hands of this case while trying to look as though they're doing everything they can.

:tears: sadly, I agree with you. It will probabky take funding and private investigations or her home- ountry getting involved. Look at the Natalee Holloway case and how much has been put into that over the years -- and still not enough for an arrest, It becomes a living nightmare for the family.

I would be so devastated. That poor family .....

"Marie arrived in Sedgefield, as part of a tour, at 17.30 on Wednesday 18 April. The group was due to stay at Afrovibe Back Packers near Myoli Beach. At approximately 18.10 a couple who were part of the tour, went for a walk on the beach, followed five minutes later, by Marie, who was walking alone.
As the wind was already blowing, the couple decided to head back fairly soon. They passed some way behind Marie who was sitting on the sand, facing the sea, but did not stop to call her. As they went up the dune they turned to take a photograph of her from the back. This was the last picture taken of the Norwegian girl before her disappearance".

Something about this part doesn't sit right with me. Why wouldn't they let her know they were leaving? And why did they take the pic of her from the back?

I just did a google image search on South Africa crime. I’m not sure if I can include the image or the link here because I’m not sure if this would be considered a reliable source per TOS, but I will say that I came across a photo of a sign on a beach reading “beware high crime area, armed gangs attack unsuspecting beach goers.” The fact that this has happened or does happen enough to warrant a sign like that in a country that may already be worried about losing business from tourism does not sit well with me. I will save the link/image just in case it is ok to post.

It appears to be fine. I will post it for you:

A disturbing increase in crime statistics which was released on Friday were deemed “the stuff nightmares are made of” by the opposition Democratic Alliance.

And this is exactly why I don't think she drowned and why I think they are quick to sweep it under the rug.
The signs, the fact that they know people are watching residents and houses, the fact that they warn tourists to be careful, they know exactly what's going on in these areas but don't want to bring too much attention to it.
The sad fact is that more and more violent crime is hitting the coast lines and my fear is that this poor girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time and became an easy target.
I might also stress that the wind is a massive factor when it comes to crime. We get very strong winds here that howl and you literally cannot hear anything over it. A whole street had their cars broken into when I was living in the city (mine included) and no one heard anything because the wind was masking the sound.
No one would have heard her scream.

The biggest thing though that is nagging me is the items. Why on earth were they found so many hours into the search? (After midnight when the search started after 7pm). Where were they found and how can they ignore the fact that the cap didn't belong to her? There is just so much open land in that area, it's easy to vanish in it.

What a nightmare situation for Marie's family, my heart truly goes out to them.
Considering the high number of break and enters in the area, it would seem that many have a great need for money.
The good thing about that, is there may be a chance that Marie was stolen to essentially be sold, which is horrible but it would mean there is still a chance she is alive ( so that they can keep making money off her).
imo, speculation.

It's been five weeks since Norwegian student vanished in Sedgefield

"It's been five weeks since Norwegian student vanished in Sedgefield

25 May 2018
The family of a Norwegian student who went missing five weeks ago while on holiday in the Southern Cape remain hopeful that the 21-year-old will be found alive.

Her sister Helen Ostbo has shared countless heartbreaking posts on social media‚ pleading for Marie’s safe return.

“Our dear Marie … has now been missing for 5 weeks. Police and volunteers from various organisations are looking for Marie. We don't give up and keep the faith that she'll come home safely. As long as there's hope there's life. Thanks to all who keep life in hope‚” she wrote on Wednesday.

“One theory is that she has taken a bath‚ but I think that is unlikely. She has grown up by the sea and boats … and knows the sea is dangerous. In addition‚ her cellphone‚ her shoes and her cap were found 100 meters from the water‚ and Marie would never put it back there. Besides‚ she would never let her friends wait‚" he said."

I've been to South Africa twice and have driven from PE to CT on the coastal highway with a stop at Mossei Bay for a dark, stormy night. It is beautiful in indescribable ways, magical really, but can be very dangerous. I was well warned by SA citizens, heeded those warnings and had no problems. These were fabulous trips that I will remember forever and I yearn to return. But, I wouldn't sit alone on a beach in FL, much less SA on the Indian Ocean at the tip of SA. Just saying.

bbm What in particular were you warned about and how did you protect yourself? Just curious.

My flight landed in Johannesburg, I was met with a pre-arranged, paid guide from a service to get through customs and to handle my baggage to my hotel. He was a young, black SA citizen and he told me to not leave my hotel, which was connected to the airport and from which I would leave in the morning for a flight to PE. "Grandmother" he said, "it is very dangerous for white people in J'burg, please stay in the safety of your hotel until I come for you in the morning." He is not my grandson, it is a term of endearment. The black SA bellman told me the same as he deposited my bags in my room. They seemed genuinely concerned for my safety and apologized that the city had such racial problems. I would be targeted because I am white. I believed them.

In PE, I stayed at a friend's home near the beach. All the houses are surrounded with 10 foot concrete walls topped with electric razor wiring and full metal automatic gates at the drive - the kind you can not see through. I assumed it was for privacy, but was told it was for safety as there are really, really bad people who will break in and kill everyone in the house, white people in particular. My friends aren't white, they are Chinese, but even they have a bullet-proof safe room filled with military weapons in the house where they can gather in the event of civil unrest or home invasion. It is normal to have such a room in the houses. They are dead serious about this. When they drive into their property, they do not get out of their car until the gate closes behind them. Hyper-vigilant.

I visited the beach on the Indian Ocean, even waded in the freezing cold water - it was gorgeous, but I was again advised to not linger and to get back to the house before dusk.

They also advised me to not rely on police for help, to never walk anywhere after dark and to never walk alone anywhere. They are my friends, I believe them.

For my drive to CT, I was advised to never stop on the side of the road, even if someone ran out in front of my vehicle, just hit them if it was unavoidable and keep going until I got to a town. As it happens one night, a man did in fact jump out in front of the car in the pitch black middle of nowhere, I swerved, didn't hit him and kept going. He literally was risking his life to stop me, which would then result in his friends coming out of the dark to do whatever. I shook for miles after that. It solidified their warnings. They weren't kidding.

At a farm house in The Karoo, owned by Dutch Africans, the entire yard is surrounded by electric fences and there are loaded weapons everywhere, even in my guest cottage - for my use if needed. I thought perhaps it was for lions, cape buffalo and rhinos, but was told that it was for 'invaders'. One of the women there was a victim of the post-apartheid attacks, her 400 year old family farm house was looted, 400 years worth of family heirlooms gone, burned to the ground and all of her livestock was killed, even her pets dogs were slaughtered. She and her family escaped with the clothes on their backs by running through the bush for miles to a neighboring farm and hot wiring a car. Terrifying stories.

In CT, the homes are similarly surrounded with walls and electric razor wire. The concierge at the hotel told me, again, to not rely on police for anything and that people hire private police forces for protection. Warning signs on some homes read something like "armed response". I was told to absolutely not walk alone anywhere and to never walk at night, to take reputable taxi services only. I was escorted to my waiting taxi and when I arrived at the restaurant, the driver called in to the doorman and he came out to get me and escort me into the restaurant. The process repeated when I left.

With all that in mind, I did as they advised and found the people of SA to be delightfully warm and graciously welcoming everywhere I went. I can not begin to relate how many kindnesses I experienced. I would definitely visit again. There were 3 occasions where I could have been victimized, but honesty and integrity prevailed.

I live in a city that is known to be one of the most dangerous in the world, so I had some street smarts before arriving. There are areas here where I wouldn't go at night and never walk alone during the day. Still, I took their warnings seriously, as should we all.

The difference, I think, is that they willingly admitted that I, as a white person, would be particularly singled out for violence because of my skin color.

This is all true, whether anyone agrees or not. It is as I experienced first hand. But, I LOVE South Africa and would recommend that everyone make the trip once in life. I would live there in a heartbeat if my whole family would come with me.

I have no doubt that Marie was the victim of a terrible crime. Whether it was by locals or one of her own trip mates remains to be seen.

I wonder why she and her tour group weren't warned as often as I was and if they were, and she chose to not adhere to that advise, then how did that couple leave her alone on the beach?

Thank you TeaTime. This is horrifying. Now I understand why some in this thread were so sure from the get go that someone took Marie. Poor girl! :(
