A man described as an estranged ex-boyfriend and former business associate of the woman killed in a Southern California office building explosion has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an unregistered destructive device, the FBI said Thursday. The arrest of Stephen Beal, 59, followed a search of his Long Beach residence by authorities, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in a statement.

A neighbor said Beal was an ex-boyfriend of the blast victim, 48-year-old Ildiko Krajnyak, and makes rockets in his garage, CBS News correspondent Jamie Yuccas reports.

Eimiller stressed that Beal was not being held in connection with Tuesday's explosion. She said he was expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana later Thursday and that no additional details would be available until a federal criminal complaint is issued.

Beal's Facebook page has many photos of him traveling with Krajnyak, a licensed cosmetologist who owned the day spa where the blast occurred. Their travel destinations included Mexico, Canada and Portugal.

A neighbor interviewed by the Orange County Register said he was told that Beal’s first wife died in an freak accident when she and Beal were moving a heavy piece of furniture downstairs and Beal lost his grip.

“That was the word in the neighborhood,” he said.

Coroner’s records show that his wife, Christine Beal, died in 2008 at age 48. The cause of death was listed “undetermined” with other causes listed as “pancreatitis, electrolyte imbalance and other undetermined factors.” The report also mentions “chronic lead intoxication.”

Over nine months, investigators were able to make the case by piecing together fragments from the bomb that they could connect to Beal, including a battery, a wire and boxes similar to the one that delivered the fatal blow.

"While the victim had expressed fears about Mr. Beal and he possessed material that could be used to manufacture a bomb, it was forensic evidence collected at the scene, analyzed and pieced together into a coherent whole that allowed us to file this case," Hanna said.

Delacourt detailed how investigators and personnel at the agency's Quantico, Virginia, lab were able to connect Beal to internal components of a battery found 10 days after the blast.

The battery part was traced to a specific shipment that arrived in the U.S. from China and ended up in a store near Beal's home. Video showed Beal paying cash for that type of battery. Investigators were able to eliminate others who bought those batteries from suspicion.

"This was the exhaustiveness of the effort," Delacourt said.

Well, I haven't seen anything about this since a federal grand jury indicted him on four felony offenses in March, 2019.

Nothing, not a word. That's not unusual. It can take many years before cases like this reach trial, and the media totally drops the story in the meantime. I can check Orange County court records but that probably doesn't include federal court. He remains in custody without bail.

Actually, that would be federal court records. He was charged with federal crimes. I don't have access to those either.

Means, motive, and opportunity...and still a hung jury. Oh well. Try again.
I believe he's still in custody with no bail.
