5/11/18 Update:
District Attorney Matt Bingham said he would rather err on the side of caution to have the items tested. A Department of Public Safety evidence analyst said he would need 60 days to go through the 10 clothing items from the victim and suspect. He started the process but will need another 53 days, he said. The next pretrial hearing is scheduled for July 12, and 241st District Court Judge Jack Skeen said he would know then whether the scheduling order would need to be altered.

7OnScene: Zavala-Garcia back in court for pre-trial hearing

.....His Pre-trial hearing in March was postponed due to the need for further DNA testing. At that time, Smith County District Attorney DA Matt Bingham. said that The Texas Dept. of Public Safety said that the forensic testing should be completed by the end of July.
[.....]
Both prosecutors and the defense team agreed that February 2019 would be an ideal time for the start of the trial, giving them enough time to review the forensic testing once completed and allowing ample time between another capital murder trial scheduled for Oct, 2019.
[.....]
Jury selection is set to begin on Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. in Judge Jack Skeen's Courtroom.

Adding latest news...
Extensive DNA testing continues for the trial surrounding the murder of a young girl in Bullard.

Gustavo Zavala Garcia was back in court for a pre-trial hearing on July 12, he was arrested and charged with capital murder for the death of Kayla Gomez Orozco,10, in November of 2016.

Kristen Cossota, an official from the lab says they're in the process of selecting 24 of the 400 hairs found on Kayla’s clothes to see they meet the criteria to extract DNA.

This next step in the process could take up to 30 days, as well as another 90 days to complete the testing, because of this, Smith County Judge Jack Skeen says it's unlikely the trial will stay on schedule.

Zavala Garcia trial likely to be pushed back as DNA testing continues
The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled for August 16 at 10 a.m.

Thanks (again!) for the udpates MsMarple!

So - I think I'm going to believe the court site you posted that said his hearing starts at 9am, not the article, which says 10am. :)

Going on a road trip today & tomorrow...

Hey Niner!

I couldn't find anything in the court search, probably because it now looks like the trial won't happen until next year - March 18.
Zavala-Garcia appeared in court Thursday for an update on DNA testing from hair samples that could be used in a jury trial. The Texas Department of Public Safety, which collected and is testing the samples, finished trace testing Monday and expects to complete DNA testing Oct. 18.

If the defense and prosecution agree to accept the results, the trial will move forward as scheduled. However, Skeen said the defense can challenge the results ,which could delay the trial date.
Capital murder trial for man accused of killing 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco expected to start in March

Here's what I have in my notes:

8/16/18 Update: Pretrial hearing, Judge Jack Skeen heard from DPS forensic expert Kristen Cossota via telephone. She said the first 24 samples being submitted for trace analysis have been completed. She said the final results on those samples will be ready in sixty days, or on about October 15. Judge Skeen set the next pre-trial hearing for September 13. Then on October 18 there will be a pre-trial hearing for the final update on DNA testing. At that time it will be decided whether more DNA testing is needed. The trial has been set for March 18, 2019.

So I have 9/13 as the next court date & then 10/18.

Another death penalty cases that takes years and years to get to trial. Well he has passed the date to enter a plea deal. That would have needed to be handed in by the 26th july. Surely it is in his best interests to take a deal of life without parole rather that get the death penalty. Some people are also selfish though and don't think about the family involved.

New schedule slates March 2019 for Kayla Gomez murder trial

The judge presiding over the trial of a suspect accused of kidnapping and murdering a 10-year-old Tyler girl in Bullard has issued a new scheduling order in the case, potentially pushing the start of the trial until March 2019.
[.....]
Zavala-Garcia initially confessed by answering “yes” when asked if he caused the girl’s death during a polygraph test, but has since recanted his statement.
[.....]
Judge Skeen also listed a number of important dates upcoming for the trial, including a discovery deadline of Thursday, Oct. 25, pre-trial motion filing deadline of Thursday, Nov. 8, and plea agreement deadline of Thursday, Dec. 13.

The case’s vernire panel is slated for Thursday, Jan. 24, while the individual voir-dire is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 4. Additionally, a total of eight pre-trial hearings have been scheduled between September 2018 and March 2019.
[.....]
An official cause of death for Gomez-Orozco has yet to be announced by authorities.

@MsMarple - can you check to see if the 9/13 & 10/18 hearing are still a go? Oh and maybe the 8 pretrial hearings that are supposed to be scheduled between Sept. 2018 & March 2019?
TIA!
