GUILTY Fugitive Lois Riess, 56, arrested by US Marshals for alleged murders in MN and FL, Mar 2018

Another target? Lois Riess stayed at condo of woman she befriended on South Padre Island

Less than a week after Lois Riess befriended and allegedly killed Pamela Hutchinson on Fort Myers Beach, the Minnesota woman was in Texas, making friends with another woman who invited Riess to stay in her guest bedroom.

These are some of the details contained in 2,627 pages of documents released Monday by the state attorney’s office, which has charged Riess with first-degree murder in the death of Hutchinson, 59, who was found shot to death in a timeshare April 9. Riess is also accused of stealing Hutchinson's car, identity and money before fleeing to Texas. This is the first of what is expected to be several voluminous releases of public records.

The first set also includes photos, cell phone text messages, statements and a detailed case report.

  • When detectives searched Riess' Texas motel room, besides a 9-mm and a .22 handgun, they found "a black bag with multiple other firearm paraphernalia that include bullets, a holster, duct tape, rubber gloves, checkbook of the victim's with (4) credit cards, and what appeared to be a trophy."
  • Photos of Riess' Escalade show two knives: a folding jack knife and a filet knife.
  • After Riess was arrested April 19, even before she was read her Miranda rights, "the suspect invoked her··right to. remain silent· and requested an attorney. Therefore, no interview was attempted."
  • Investigators removed two wine bottles from the kitchen trash of Hutchinson's condo; when her body, which was found on a bullet-holed pillow, "There were no indications of a struggle or defensive marks on the decedent ... the projectile entered the decedent's left lower lung; traveled through the right atrium of the heart, the esophagus and right upper lung. The projectile was located in the upper right portion of the decedent's bra (and her) stomach and intestines were full of blood and her kidneys were pale, indicating shock and loss of blood"
  • The people Riess met in Texas describer her as "completely normal. Neither witnessed any emotional breakdowns or outbursts."
  • Kathy Laferty, who owns the Padre Rita Grill on South Padre Island that Riess visited, remembered her as "always happy, upbeat and pleasant. Kathy never observed any signs of anger or emotional distress, but reiterated the suspect was overly friendly, jovial, a good tipper and talked with everyone at the bar."
  • In addition to what appears to be a blood spot, there was a newspaper in the Escalade, the March 11 Minnesota Star Tribune with the lead headline: "House of horrors hid in plain sight."

The MOST chilling picture/video to me, is the one of her laughing and smiling with Pam Hutchinson at that bar. That poor woman. Bernadette Mathis is lucky she did not get killed. She must be shaking in her boots.

Riess and Bernadette had gone to breakfast in the morning, and made plans for dinner on April 20. Riess was arrested on the night of the 19th, and the court documents say Bernadette was told by someone at the bar while waiting for Riess to show up.

Bernadette told Wink News she thought Riess was 'a new best friend', and that the woman had seemed overly kind and paid for her dinner.

It's just scary—very scary to meet a stranger and think that they're going to be your friend and they turn out to be a killer,' she said.

In their interactions, Bernadette told investigators Riess came across 'completely normal, calm and friendly'.

ALLEGED TIMELINE OF LOIS RIESS MURDERS

April 15 – Riess goes to dinner with new friend Bernadette, before the pair return to Bernadette’s home to use her hot tub, and Riess stays the night in her guest room.

April 16 – Riess and Bernadette go for breakfast.

I realize that I am kind-of antisocial in real life, but it blows my mind that someone would meet a complete stranger and then let them spend the night at your house. Especially as an older woman.

Lois Riess has a sweet tooth ... and what else her jail records show

Updated 4:37 p.m. ET June 3, 2018
No family members have visited accused killer Lois Riess since she's been in the Lee County Jail, though her 33-year-old daughter Briana has sent $200 to fund her mother's canteen account, from which she's so far withdrawn $148.55.

Jail logs show Riess favors sweet and spicy snacks, spending more than $90 on treats like Hot Hot Hot BBQ Chips, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, squeezable jalapeño cream cheese and All Energy Trail Mix.

Her apparent favorite? Chick-O-Stick candy, orange sugar-coated tubes of peanut butter, which she's bought six times during her jail stay. She's also purchased Colgate, Lady Speed Stick, a towel and two T-shirts.
[...]
As for how she spends her days, her purchases offer some suggestions. Riess has bought 10 stamped postcards, a writing pad, envelopes, a book of word find puzzles and a pen.

For a woman on the run, Riess wasn’t acting like one. She spent most of her journey across the country making stops at casinos.

Documents from the State Attorney’s Office show Riess made plenty of friends, including two men on vacation in South Padre Island, Texas. She exchanged phone numbers with them and met for dinner several times.

One of the men even texted Riess and said, “I would love to see you.”

I’m ok with that.

Me too. If the facts are correct, the murder in FL was a solid premeditated murder. MN doesn’t have the death penalty so let FL do their thing. She’ll never be executed anyway.

Riess has pleaded not guilty to killing Hutchinson, 59. She is accused of first-degree murder and the state is seeking to sentence her to death.
She has yet to be charged in Minnesota for the death of her husband.

Fuller set a case management conference for Oct. 31.

Did this woman have a nervous breakdown? She had a husband with a successful business and a 500K inheritance and blew it all even wrote checks from the poor husband's business. Gambling addiction on steroids. She seems compliant now and especially when arrested. It's like she cracked up when killing these people.

New evidence released in case of Blooming Prairie murder suspect Lois Reiss. I found this chilling:
The evidence also includes a T-shirt from the Smokin’ Oyster Brewery still wrapped in its plastic packaging. That was the seaside eatery where Riess met Hutchinson on April 4. Hutchinson, 59, was found dead five days later and authorities believe Riess killed her to steal her identity.
