Im sticking with the 25th because of the word "AFTER" in what is stated below. Those articles sure did not make it easy to figure out everything LOL :)

I updated my post above where I listed all 4 incidents.

"Three days after a father was found shot to death during a Southern California camping trip, another camper reported a shooting at the same Malibu campground."

Second shooting at Malibu campground where father found murdered in front of two young daughters
Hopefully LE can clarify soon. It's definitely confusing!

Is there a target practice range near this camp?

Not sure but after reading more about these I think 3 out of the 4 incidents were close range. The guy in the hammock said he thought the shot was close range on him, and then with the other 2017 car incident where it turns out she was sleeping in the car it has this below. So if we assume the tent killing was close range then that means 3 out of 4 were likely close range.

"She said she believes the round was fired from about 20 feet away."

"Rogers said he didn’t realize how serious his injury was until he got to the hospital. He said he believes he was shot at close range."

Ditto this. DH and I have driven through the canyons from Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) back to the 101 freeway many times. Calabasas, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks are close to it, and these are fairly well-heeled areas. Although it seems remote, it still is close enough to Los Angeles, and gang members could easily drive to it. I am wondering if this could be a gang-initiation type shooting.

Also, now that it's summer, it's a straight shot to the Santa Monica Pier and Malibu beaches via the 10 freeway from some of the more crime-ridden areas of Los Angeles. I'm enclosing a link to a Los Angeles gang map, and you can see how easy it is to get to the beaches via the 10 freeway.

Los Angeles Gang Map

ETA: We've had occasional unsolved shootings along the beaches in the South Bay. I remember one guy who was biking north along the Strand (Manhattan Beach, El Segundo to Santa Monica) after midnight. He was found shot to death. I don't think anyone was ever arrested, and IIRC, LE attributed it to a gang-related shooting.

Most importantly, my heart goes out to Tristan's Family and Friends. Praying this is solved soon.

Gangs target other gangs. Not white dudes in tents with their kids.

A stray bullet due to gang activity though? That could be a possibility. That happens.

Wondering what the child specialists might hope to find out from the children --- something witnessed at the time of the shooting, something that might have occurred earlier in the evening? Perhaps a stranger spoke to the girls and they reported it back to dad? LE seems keen on helping the children communicate what they know.

I wonder if there is a place nearby where people go to illegally practice shooting. Some of these stories seem like stray bullets and others seem like intentional killings. Is it possible?

"James Rogers, a wildlife biologist, was hiking in Tapia Park, just south of Malibu Creek State Park, in November 2016 when he was hit by birdshot. He told The Times he needed surgery to remove the pellets that had struck him in the arm that day.

“I heard a loud bang and then felt a burning sensation in my arm and fell to the ground,” he said. “Before I could look at my wound I did a quick check of the perimeter and I saw nothing.”"

"He said there had been no real progress in the shooting investigation and he’s concerned the shooter may have gotten sharper over the last couple of years.

“I was told by those working out there, there have been several other shootings,” Rogers told the paper.

Meliss Tatangelo said she was camping in her Honda in January 2017 when she heard a loud noise early in the morning.

She didn’t immediately go outside, but when she and another camper investigated, they discovered what she believed to be a shotgun round in the back of her car, according to the paper. "

"Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said detectives are examining whether the killing is connected to prior shootings at the state park. Officials said they have not found evidence so far linking Beaudette’s death to the other shootings. They also could not offer a full count of the number of shootings in the area.

“Told by those working out there, there have been several other shootings,” Rogers said."

Mystery at Malibu Creek park: Who killed father at campground, and is it connected to other shootings?

If brother-in-law SM was in nearby tent with my 2 young children and heard 1 or 2 shots, knowing my relative with young children near mine, I would immediately call 911 then try and make contact with my family in the nearby tent to check on my relative- i.e. text. If shots fired while TB in tent, Killer would risk being seen/caught knowing tent is nearby. Suspicious SM told media that 2 holes were in tent. Why would SM report that and not the Police? Also, bullet holes tend to be distinctive in size, so if the holes SM reported to media were bullet-like holes, why not reveal that? I remember when I got a call that my Father was found dead in his apartment, and I responded like the the neighbor reported to media about woman who was in TB's house "I just kept hearing a woman screaming, 'No. No. No. No.' It was just startling to hear something like that," Scott Blakeslee said." My father was not shot. If he was, I would have screamed, "No. No. No. Who would do this? Did you catch the killer?" But that's just me.
Also, if my husband was shot inside a tent he was sharing with my 2 young children, I don't think I would be posting pictures of my 2 young children two days after death of husband. I would be scared that the killer may come back and try to harm my kids who could be credible witnesses as well as me. The public pictures posted on wife's fb and on go fund me show the 2 and 4 year old girls with TB and his wife, as if it's validation that TM loved his family which sounds like he did. TB appears to be a happy, successful, amazing Dad and devoted husband. If someone murdered my husband with a gun, leaving his bleeding to death inside a tent with my 2 young children, and the killer was not caught, I would shut my fb down, grab my 2 children (I have a son and daughter), and go into hiding.

For Police to say that police have not ruled out suicide YET sounds like the weapon may have been found in the tent or nearby. Perhaps if weapon was found inside the tent, and someone other than Police and killer handle the weapon, the person who saw the weapon first may grab it or cover it, so that it the children don't get a hold of it.

The news shows photo what appears to be their home. In searching address, this was a lease/rental which on 6/22/16 posting removed. So, almost to the day 2 years later, TB is dead. If the Irvine home was a rental, I wonder if the family gave notice to the landlord that they were moving?

News reports that TB received job promotion March 2018 and that TB recently left his employer, as he and his family were re-locating to Bay Area. Did TB have a new job offer? It appears both were not working at the time of the shooting.

When did TB and/or SM or family member(s) reserve campsite? Reservations are accepted up to 6 months in advance. Did they reserve one site or two? There video shows 2 cars in one site parking and 1 car in another site that is perfectly parked as if a another car would park next to it.

Appears the wife of SM who appears to be Sister or TB wife also did not go camping on day 1. Did she have plans to meet them Day 2?

Wonder if it was TB who suggested wife stay home to study for exam or if wife asked TB if she could stay home to study.

Also, I think police reported at least one gunshot on TB's body, so perhaps more than 1 shot to TB's body. Guests of park report deer and coyote known to be seen around park. Perhaps people hunt the deer or shoot at coyotes who come close to their site?
