"Dr van Sebille said the Southern Ocean was really ‘‘quite a special place’’ because it was possible to keep moving east without hitting land.

‘‘There is an opening between South America and Antarctica, the great passage, it just flows on and on and on, so it’s this giant current that’s actually the biggest current in the world,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s swept by the winds and as it becomes strong it starts to break up in all kinds of vortices.

‘‘It’s just like if you walk here in the CBD and there’s a strong wind, and then behind the big buildings you start seeing vortices. The same happens in the Southern Ocean. It’s full of these vortices, we call them eddies. Their physics is essentially the same as hurricanes, they’re kind of the ocean equivalent of hurricanes. They move around, they’re ubiquitous, and they pose a real problem in this case because they make the flow highly unpredictable.’’

Dr van Sebille said the unpredictability of ocean eddies was demonstrated in 1992, when a shipping container holding nearly 29,000 plastic bath toys, including rubber ducks, spilled from a cargo ship during a storm in the north Pacific Ocean.
Oceanographers began tracking the movements of the toys, which included red beavers, green frogs, blue turtles and yellow ducks.

Ten months after the incident, the first toys began to wash up along the Alaskan coast, and in the years since then they have been found washed up on the shores of Hawaii, America, South America, and Australia, while others have been found frozen in Arctic ice."

“A national memorial in Perth to honour the 239 passengers and crew on board the lost flight MH370 has been put on hold after backlash from families of those missing.

The West Australian and federal governments have decided to wait until the Malaysian Airlines flight, which disappeared in March 2014, is found.

The Boeing 777 vanished in March 2014 on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

A four-year search costing more than $200 million failed to find the wreckage. It was thought the plane could have ended up on the seabed in the remote Indian Ocean”

Since Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8, 2014, several amateur hunters have come forward claiming to have found debris pieces of the missing jet. Recently, a pair — who work as radio presenters — claimed to have spotted a "man made-looking dome object" in the ocean off the coast of Mauritius.

According to U.K.'s the Sun, Duncan Heyde and Thane Kirby, from New Zealand, were looking for Flight MH370 wreckage during a trip to Mauritius, a small island near where plane debris has previously been found. The duo reportedly spent two days on the water trying to spot the suspected wreckage. They based their search on coordinates provided by amateur crash investigator Peter McMahon.

"We did see an item of interest at one of the coordinates. We managed to go over it five or six times but couldn't stay on it due to the testing weather conditions in the area," Heyde told the Sun. Heyde and Kirby's claims have not been officially confirmed.

I wonder if it was the nose cone.

According to this article which contains a recap of old info, the final report will be released on Monday.

The government of Malaysia on Monday will release what it calls a full and final report on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 carrying 239 people more than four years ago, according to the country's transport minister.

Thanks for sharing it. I'm clueless how they can release a final report when the plane hasn't been found!

The Malaysian government has faced accusations of holding back information - but hopes the final report into the tragedy will draw a line under it.

Kok Soo Chon, the lead investigator, told a press conference...

  • The aircraft, instead of going straight to Beijing, "made a right turn then a left turn and went in a south-westerly direction".
  • The turn-back "was not because of anomalies in the mechanical systems... we can confirm the turnback... was made under manual control".
  • He said: "We cannot establish if the aircraft was flown by anyone other than the pilot, but we cannot exclude the possibility of unlawful interference by a third party."
  • But there is "no evidence" to support the theory the plane was taken over remotely by hackers.
  • The captain was a "very competent pilot" with an "almost flawless safety record" and there were no known defects with the plane.
  • The report ends: "In conclusion, the team is unable to determine the real cause for the disappearance of MH370."
MH370 deliberately turned before vanishing and hijacking cannot be ruled out

This report is not going to stop speculation on what caused this tragedy.

Here are a few Aussie articles about the report that was released today.

Kok Soo Chon, head of the MH370 safety investigation team, made it clear that this was not the final report ... but it is his team's final report. Their work is done, and nothing else will be done unless the plane is found.

He opened the press conference by saying this report was not the final one, but later clarified his statement by saying that this is only because they have not found any victims or most of the wreckage.
"The answer can only be conclusive if the wreckage is found," he said.
"As far as our team is concerned, our work is done, we have released the report."
Investigators unable to determine the cause of MH370's disappearance

“It’s such a horrible part of the ocean down there. They looked but you couldn’t have picked a worse part of the ocean.”

The investigators did issue a criticism of air traffic controllers in Malaysia and Vietnam for not sounding the alarm immediately, meaning search and rescue operations were delayed.

Mystery of MH370 to remain unsolved without new search for wreckage

Dr Chon said the team had concluded that MH370 deviated from its path and that the plane’s change in direction over the Indian Ocean was made under manual control.

“We can confirm the turn-back,” Dr Chon said.

“We have carried out simulator sessions to determine how the aircraft turned back and we can confirm that the turn-back was made, not under autopilot, but was made under manual control.

“(It) was not because of anomalies in the mechanical system.”

Investigators have not been able to establish if the aircraft was flown by anyone other than the pilot.

“We can also not exclude the possibility that there’s unlawful interference by a third party,” Dr Chon said.

Blaming it on an unknown.

Take responsibility Malaysia.

It was one of your own.

'They had no conclusion about what happened aboard the plane that vanished with 239 people on board en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014, leaving one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries unsolved.

Mystery of MH370 to remain unsolved without new search for wreckage

Malaysia is the only one to point a finger at, at this point. In addition to not knowing their plane didn't make the 1st stop, how long did they waste in the beginning looking in the wrong area? What was it a week? Then they didn't have the proper technology to listen for pings in the water. Had things not started wrong there could have been a different outcome or I think so anyway. Had they started searching for pings at the start I think they would have a better idea of where to start searching. They heard pings when the batteries were about dead.

Don't get me started about the pictures of debris either...

MH370 mystery ends with new report
Thanks. This is also new info for me:
There was no evidence of a rapid change in the altitude or speed on military record to indicate that MH370 was deliberately evading radar, according to the report.

I am not that disappointed with this report. If you watch enough Air Crash Investigations the show... I think there is a deadline for the lead investigator to publish a "final report". It also means end of their investigation. It doesn't guarantee a complete answer.

This is my understanding also. They belong to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and have to follow Annex 13’s rules regarding accident investigations and reports.

Relatives who were briefed at the transport ministry before the report's public release expressed anger that there was nothing new in the document, with some storming out of the briefing as frustration boiled over.

'It is so disappointing,' said Intan Maizura Othman, whose husband was a steward on MH370. 'I am frustrated. There is nothing new in the report.

'Those who gave the briefing from the ministry of transport were not able to give answers as they were not (the ones) who wrote the report.'

She said the meeting between relatives and officials descended into a 'shouting match' as family members' frustration boiled over.

'Many asked questions,' said G. Subramaniam, who lost a son on the flight, but added that 'unsatisfactory responses left many angry'.

Updated article. I can understand how frustrated and angry the victims families are it’s a horrendous situation my heart breaks for them.
