Authorities on Saturday searched an area near the border of Athens-Clarke and Oglethorpe counties for the body of an Athens man who has been missing for nearly two years. Mitchell was believed to be the victim of foul play. He was reported missing Aug. 21, 2016 by his daughter, six days after the woman last saw her father as he left their home on Angus Lane in north Athens. She told police she did not immediately file a report because it was not unusual for Mitchell to be away from home for a couple days at a time.
The woman told police she found Mitchells truck near the entrance of Pinewood Apartments on Bailey Street, where he has no known acquaintances.
Investigators recovered blood from his vehicle, but have not detected any activity on his cellphone or bank cards since Mitchell went missing in August 2016.
Mitchell was described by police as a black male, 5-foot-9 and 290 pounds. He was last seen wearing khaki shorts, a purple shirt with white designs and a gray 49ers ball cap. He has a tattoo of a heart with a ribbon and the names Tabitha and Sara on his right upper arm.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that helps authorities locate Mitchell.
