A 16-month-old baby boy survived being intentionally hanged at an in-home daycare Friday morning in South Minneapolis, according to police.
The suspect, 42-year-old Nataliia Karia, allegedly fled the scene and went on a rampage that included two traffic accidents following the incident. She then threatened to commit suicide from an overpass.
A Minneapolis day care provider accused of hanging a toddler in her home pleaded guilty to attempted murder, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday.
Nataliia Karia, 43, also pleaded guilty to third-degree assault of the 16-month-old boy and two counts of criminal vehicular operation for hitting a pedestrian, another driver and a bicyclist as she fled in her minivan. Evidence in the case will be presented to Hennepin County District Judge Jay Quam on April 27 to determine sentencing, which could be up to 15 years in prison.
A psychiatrist called by prosecutors testified that Nataliia M. Karia’s actions were not with “evil intent or a criminal mind-set,” but she understood what she was doing and could be treated in prison.
However, a psychiatrist and psychologist called by Karia’s defense attorneys said her crime was triggered by depression, stress from overwork and an abusive husband, and it would be better to place her on long-term probation and treat her as an outpatient.
Judge Jay Quam questioned the witnesses and will ultimately decide Karia’s sentence. Sentencing is set for July 16.
But why???
