*Brad Edward Fields (28) BF charged (1/20/18) with 4 counts: felony murder, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree child abuse & torture. Held without bond. BF was found competent to stand trial in April, 2018. 5/11/18 charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree child abuse and conspiracy to commit second-degree child abuse charges. Next hearing was 7/6/18. Trial was to start 8/13/18, moved to 9/11 per DA’s request.
State officials have begun legal proceedings to sever the couple's parental rights to Diaz's other daughter and Gabrielle's half-sister. A hearing on the state's petition was on Jan. 25, 2018 in Wayne County Circuit Court. A trial date to sever parental rights was on April 24 through May 4, 2018. This was cancelled due to psych eval for Diaz. The state's court petition also said both Diaz and Fields have criminal histories. Diaz is on probation for 2016 convictions for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of prescription forms. Fields has convictions for interfering with a police investigation, third-degree retail fraud and carrying a concealed weapon. Check out my post #203 for the longer explanation and link but the short answer is:

An abstract is a summary of facts. Under Michigan law it's a report that has to go to the Michigan Secretary of State on any crime that involves a vehicle. This is related to Diaz and Fields running away from LE in January (in a vehicle). In other words just paperwork that's probably already been taken care of.

Case Needs to Be Abstracted to MI Secretary of State means a copy or report has to be sent to the Michigan Secretary of State which contains all the records about the crime. The Secretary of State oversees cases where vehicles were involved in felonies.

Diaz and Fields both claimed they had mental issues, and competency examinations were ordered. Fields was found competent, and is scheduled for trial in September.

After two competency examinations for Diaz — one by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Center for Forensic Psychiatry, the other by a doctor retained by her attorney David Cripps — the defendant was deemed mentally able to stand trial, Cripps said during Wednesday's hearing.

Chief Judge Tina Brooks Green ordered a Sept. 4 preliminary examination.

Candice Diaz, 25, and her boyfriend, Brad Fields, 28, are charged with felony murder, second-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse in connection with the Jan. 1 death of Diaz's daughter Gabrielle Barrett.

On New Year's Day, Gabrielle's relatives found her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest in the bathroom of Diaz's mobile home. They called police, and when officers arrived they found the relatives performing CPR. The girl was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor and pronounced dead. Gabrielle had bruises all over her body and severe "burns on her legs from the knee down, on her buttocks, posterior to both elbows." The girl was so badly scalded, one of her big toes fell off her body.

The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner who performed the autopsy told police that Gabrielle's death "was the worst child death case" he had seen in 27 years of practice.
