2 arrests made in Saturday shooting death of Jacksonville girl

The opening prayers were in Spanish, but the emotion, sadness and feeling were understandable by all at Tuesday night’s vigil for 7-year-old Heidy Rivas Villanueva, killed by a stray bullet as she waited with her father and 2-year-old brother in a car in that same 103rd Street shopping center only a few days earlier.

Only hours after police announced the arrest of two of three people sought in connection with the Saturday night shooting death of the girl, more than 100 family members, friends and supporters showed up for a tearful vigil outside the El Tapatio store in the 7900 block of 103rd Street.

Heidy, her father and another sibling were sitting in a parked car when gunfire erupted. According to the Sheriff's Office, 13 shots were fired as a result of a planned robbery under the pretense of a gun sale in the parking lot of an IHOP.

On Saturday, her mother and father held each other as they remembered the moment she was born.

"She was born at 11 o' clock in the morning, and her mother took her in her arms and she said it was the best day of her life," Heidy's father said. "It's so sad that it was so short time that she was only 7."
