Sheriff's office to announce break in 1999 cold case murder in Sarasota

SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - After nearly 20 years, the sheriff's office says there's been a break in a cold case murder in Sarasota.

On Wednesday, the Sheriff Tom Knight will hold a press conference at 10:30am to announce the details in a break in the 1999 murder of Deborah Dalzell.

A little bit of history on the case plus photo of Deborah:

Unsolved Sarasota murder not forgotten

On the night of March 28, 1999, Dalzell declined a dinner invitation from her sister. Weary from putting in extra hours, as she often did as office manager at KMC Telecom, and from going over her sister’s income tax return, she decided to spend a quiet evening at her newly built home in the 5300 block of Colony Meadows Lane.

At about 10:30 p.m., Dalzell, 47, spoke on the phone to her sister about the income tax forms. That would be the last known conversation for Dalzell.

Some good news!

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, in 2015, detectives sent the DNA evidence from the crime scene to a company in Virginia that specializes in DNA phenotyping, which is the process of predicting physical appearance and ancestry from unidentified DNA evidence. The company produced a snapshot of what the suspect might have looked like at 25-years-old.

Good Lord. And Riverview is on my bicycle route to work too.

Former fiancee? I hope she is still alive and safe. And I quite honestly cannot imagine Fleming having a child.

He needs either life in prison, or hanged from the tallest tree in the state of Florida.

Sarasota Police hopeful DNA evidence can solve 30-year-old cold case

The same DNA technology that helped close the 1999 Deborah Dalzell cold case is being used by other Suncoast police departments to not only solve decades old cold cases but also identify victims.

DNA evidence crucial in two recently solved Sarasota cold cases

“Luke Fleming was arrested using brand new DNA technologies: phenotyping and genetic genealogy. DNA found on the scene of the crime was used to create a phenotype or a picture of what the killer could possibly look like. Then genetic genealogy linked that same DNA from the scene to Fleming’s family tree, ultimately connecting him to the murder. The technology was developed just six months prior to that by Parabon NanoLabs.

“It is becoming more and more popular," Dr. Ellen Greytak, director of bioinformatics for Parabon NanoLabs said. "Of course every time we solve a case and someone announces, ‘I’m not sure we could have solved this without these new tools,’ then other agencies start thinking, ‘are there cases that we have that have DNA?’””
