Australia Australia - Sydney, Royal Nat Park, poss AsianMale 25-40, bones in checkered shopping bag, Sep'18

Seems the motorist found some bones first and then the Police found the bag.

Yes, probably scattered by animals :(

Which would mean there's still a possibility that a naked body was dumped there inside the bag and has skeletonised + scattered over months/years (yet to be determined publicly by police.)

In regard to the bag - Here's what Yahoo7 reported Monday

At first it was a discarded rego plate that caught the driver’s eye so he climbed down a steep embankment a few metres to check it out. That’s when he spotted the large checked shopping bag.

Inside he found a collection of bones, sparking a homicide investigation.

Here's the Daily Mail report from Monday

The grim discovery was made by a motorist who stopped for a bathroom break just after 4.45pm on Saturday in Sydney's Royal National Park.

Mark and Faye Leveson were visiting the site in remembrance of their son when police informed them of what they found in a large checkered bag nearby.

I now think The Leader's article is a bit misleading.

Regardless of who found the bag - it was found on Saturday.

I still think it was the driver because the "they found" could relate to the driver OR police. It's ambiguous phrasing, as the motorist isn't identified as a woman or man in this article.

There is a list here of all the (reported) long term missing males in NSW. If this man was last seen in NSW. There are 79 males on the list.

AFP Missing Persons - NSW, Male
Search Results

This list can be filtered further - to a year they went missing, postcode, hair/eye colour, height, build type.
I imagine forensics will be able to determine a potential height range from the remains, by measuring the length of the major bones.

(I notice little William features on the revolving/changing footer of their page :( )

Thanks SouthAussie!

Some of the photos look like Mug Shots

I was glad to see only a couple of very young lads in the list.

Of course, this unidentified male could have been dumped from anywhere north or south ... seeing that Sir Bertram Stevens Drive comes off a highway, then leads back onto that same highway.

Channel 9 news reporter just said police believe the body has been there not for months, but for years. They also have teeth to check for dental records and are confident they will be able to identify him

If the plastic/nylon bag is indeed a "Hong Kong shopper", that can rule out missing persons before 1990s, since the bag was not imported into Aus before that time approximately.

It's not likely that of a 3y.o. either, bones that size would be quite obviously recognised.

Yes, they already said that it is an adult male. I realise it isn't William or another young child.
Unfortunately, the list cannot be filtered to exclude male children.

Will have to see if the list can be filtered from a time period. Thanks for the hint about the shopping bag.

Bbm
Yes that highway is Princes Hwy. From memory, once past the turn off to Royal National Park, it will join the freeway which is 110km limit. And you know you have left Sydney heading south.

I find it an eerie coincidence that the body was found not too far from Mathew Leverson's. Mathew went missing in 2007. Just out of curiosity I zoomed in on the map of sydney looking at those missing from known gay areas (please don't judge me for this - 20 years ago i worked at a HIV centre in Surrey Hills & have the utmost respect for the gay community absolutely). Anyway, there's a man named Simon Knight that went missing from Surrey Hills in 2005. Makes me suspicious - MOO. The article below suggests he might be still alive, but AFAIK he hasn't been seen.

I've also wanted to comment on the fact that this victim's remains have been reported as being "walking distance" from where Matthew Leveson's body was buried - when I would consider 2 km... not really walking distance. "A short distance" "relatively close to" yes but from my experience in Royal National Park, you are driving around.

I also wonder why ML's case seems to accompany, or conclude, most articles as if it has some kind of significance. It gets me thinking if there's something more to this, as it's been so consistent since Monday's first reports (full disclosure, I work in the media.)

I guess it is quite a chilling coincidence that the Leveson's were at the Park on Saturday.

Back to Simon Knight, and his friend actually produced a play based off the disappearance:

"I know that what Simon's family encountered, and what a lot of people encountered at the time I wrote the play, was that with the police there seemed to be a real disparity between how someone who was gay was treated and how others were. There were so many assumptions about their lifestyle. You'd hope an investigation would treat people on their individual circumstances, and not say 'oh, here's a gay man so he's probably taken drugs or he's off somewhere having sex for three days'."

Media knowledge? That's awesome, and for us too :) Yes it's a pity about the way some assume certain things about people in the gay community. There was another article i read about Simon that was interesting in that way -

"His mother, Robyn Conlan, said the case wasn’t taken seriously enough at the time.

He was 32, gay, taking drugs at the time fairly heavily, and they disappear all the time, she told Sydney Star Observer. We were very angry, because it was my ex-husband and myself who found where he had stayed the night and the escort that he was with.

After fighting to obtain the police brief, Conlan and Knight’s father, Robert, found police had described their son as a prostitute -” the first they learned of it.

He just disappeared. He left the house he was sharing, with his bicycle and his camera and withdrew $500 from the bank and went to this hotel, obviously tried to get this particular escort. But there were conflicting stories about the escort and his friend."

BBM - what friend?

Reward for gay disappearance - Star Observer

As for 2km being close or not, the driving around makes it feel all the more closer... eek

Thanks for the link to the play. I love what his friend had to say. I hope he is found one day... (insert prayer symbol)

edit - bolded some

"It is believed that the bones had been buried in the park for quite some time before the discovery was made."

Buried? I hadn't seen that. Sorry if a rehash & obvious. I sometimes skim too much, which is a bad habit.

Human bones found in Sydney national park
That's an ABC report. Maybe they were too busy with their internal problems, and got confused on Monday. There is no link to a later update after the gender was announced.
