"Toronto police create first-ever missing persons unit in wake of McArthur investigation
New unit is reviewing all city's missing person cases since 1990"

"Toronto police's missing persons unit was launched quietly in July. It consists of two lead detectives, four detective constables as investigators, and one analyst.

New unit reviewing cases going back 28 years
The team has spent the last few months bringing together information on every missing persons cases the service has handled since 1990. Annually, Toronto police say they receive an average of 4,200 missing persons' reports. This means the unit is likely examining more than 100,000 cases.

The plan is to review each one of them — both solved and unsolved — to make sure they were investigated to today's standard".

What a daunting task! This must bring new hope for many, many families. I'm wishing them good success.

Bruce McArthur waives right to preliminary hearing - CityNews Toronto
"Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur has waived his right to a preliminary hearing, meaning the case will go directly to trial.

The 67-year-old landscaper is facing eight counts of first-degree murder.

Appearing in court Monday morning, McArthur said nothing as the names of his alleged victims and the charges he faces were read out loud.

He will return to court on Nov. 5, at which point a trial date will be set."

Bruce McArthur waives right to preliminary hearing
"Bruce McArthur could go to trial earlier than expected after the alleged serial killer agreed on Monday to waive his right to a preliminary hearing.

The decision was announced when the 67-year-old landscaper appeared in court to be formally arraigned on eight counts of murder of men with ties to Toronto’s Gay Village.

A preliminary hearing is a court proceeding where the prosecution's case is tested to see if there is enough evidence to go to trial.

Skipping that initial phase would streamline a massive criminal case that includes thousands of exhibits and involves eight homicides over a seven-year span.

Mr. McArthur is now to appear before Superior Court Justice John McMahon on Nov. 5 to set a trial date."

"Negotiations between Crown and defence to skip the preliminary hearing had been going on for weeks.

It was the first time in months that Mr. McArthur had appeared in person in court. Looking thinner than before and having shaved his goatee, he stood in the glass-enclosed box for the accused as the charges were read"
"Det. Dickinson said a six-officer police team is still receiving tips and reviewing cold cases to see if they might be linked to Mr. McArthur. There is, however, no evidence so far that he was involved in a homicide before 2010 when the first of the eight men went missing."

Remains of some of Bruce McArthur's alleged victims released to families: police

November 2, 2018

"TORONTO -- Families mourning the deaths of men believed to be victims of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur are finally starting to lay their loved ones to rest, those close to the situation said Friday.

Toronto police said investigators have begun releasing the remains of the eight men with ties to the city's gay community who McArthur stands accused of killing between 2010 and 2017.

Acting Insp. Hank Idsinga, the lead investigator on the case, said at least some of the families have been able to claim their relatives' remains....

"I can't comment on how many sets of the remains have been returned yet, other than that it is a work in progress," Idsinga said in an email. "I hope that it concludes sooner rather than later."

One LGBTQ community activist said funerals for at least three of the alleged victims had taken place as of Friday afternoon...
He said funeral services have already been held for both Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, the last two men McArthur is accused of killing.

Burials will hopefully take place in the coming weeks for Skandaraj Navaratnam, the first man reported missing in 2010, and Kirushna Kanagaratnam, a man who went unidentified for several weeks as police sought information from the public, Vijayanathan said.

Vijayanathan said he is unaware of prospective funeral arrangements for McArthur's other alleged victims Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi and Abdulbasir Faizi...."

After investigative delays, funerals finally under way for alleged Bruce McArthur victims

"Haran Vijayanathan didn’t know Dean Lisowick. But when he heard the slain 47-year-old’s body would be left unclaimed in a local coroner’s office, he couldn’t let it stay there. He’d pick up the remains himself and ensure they were put to rest.

Mr. Lisowick, a man who struggled through his life with a crack-cocaine addiction, transience and violent outbursts toward some of his relatives, fell off the radar more than a year ago. In January, police listed his name among the grim ranks of eight men allegedly slain by 67-year-old Bruce McArthur....

Mr. Lisowick’s remains, however, went unclaimed from the coroner’s office. That’s when Mr. Vijayanathan, a community organizer who has spoken out for LGBTQ+ communities throughout the McArthur case, offered to help. On Friday, he will hold a quiet funeral for Mr. Lisowick at the St. James Cemetery. “There was just too much trauma there,” Mr. Vijayanathan said of the situation for Mr. Lisowick’s relatives. He’s been in touch with the family and said he’s doing this to support them, as well...."

Wow. That's incredibly kind. And, considering what Lisowick's family went through, it's kind to them as well.

Bruce McArthur trial could start in September 2019, judge says (with clip)

"TORONTO -- A man accused of killing eight men with ties to Toronto's gay village could stand trial as early as next September, a judge said Monday as the alleged serial killer made his first appearance in Ontario's Superior Court of Justice.

Bruce McArthur, a self-employed landscaper who faces eight counts of first-degree murder, said nothing as Justice John McMahon laid out the anticipated timeline for the case.

A trial could begin either in September 2019 or in January 2020, said McMahon, who recently took over the case after McArthur, 67, waived his right to a preliminary hearing last month and proceedings moved from a lower court to the Superior Court....

The judicial pre-trial is scheduled for Nov. 30 and McArthur is scheduled to make a brief court appearance after it, court heard...."

No one has reached out to our family. My brother Jon Riley vanished from Gay village 4/26/13 during Project Houston. Maybe the good that will come from the McArthur is a new look at all missing persons cases in Canada but so far it has meant nothing to our family. No investigstion. No new questions.
