Indonesian plane crashes off Jakarta

I’m very sorry to read this. Do we know what the last altitude was? Hoping for a miracle that there are survivors.

“The plane involved was a Boeing Co. 737 Max 8, marking the first ever accident for the model. While the jet has a capacity to seat as many as 210 people, it wasn’t immediately clear how many passengers and crew were on board. The National Search and Rescue Agency is scheduled to hold a press briefing at 10 a.m. local time.“

“A total of 181 passengers – including two infants and one child – were on board the flight, the search and rescue agency said at a press conference. Two pilots and six crew members were also on board.

Debris thought to be from the plane, including aircraft seats, was found near an offshore refining facility, an official of state energy firm Pertamina said.“

What we know so far
  • Lion Air flight JT610 crashed, 13 minutes after takeoff, in the sea off Indonesia at roughly 6.30am local time.
  • 189 people were on board, including passengers and crew. 20 of the passengers were Indonesian officials, according to the finance department.
  • The low-cost carrier’s flight was travelling from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang in Indonesia.
  • Rescuers have released footage of plane debris and personal items floating in the water at the crash site. They have found handbags, clothing, cellphones, ID cards and driver's licenses.
  • There has been no indication of casualties, or cause of the crash.
  • The plane was a new model – a Boeing 737 MAX 8 – and had only been in use for 2 months. The pilot requested a return to the airport shortly before the crash.
  • Waters at the site are 30-35 metres deep, and flight data showed it made a sudden, sharp dive into the sea.

Lion Air’s CEO, Edward Sait, has revealed that the plane had reported a technical problem on Sunday night.

The jet was flying from Denpasar to Jakarta, Sait said, when pilots reported a problem with the plane. But he stressed it was cleared by engineers and was airworthy when it took off on Monday morning.

It is going to be very interesting to see what caused this crash. Thank you for the updates everyone.

No reports of bodies or (sorry) body parts yet? Sounds like the plane didn't break apart, so bodies are going to be found still buckled into their seats in the fuselage, as they had just taken off only minutes before.

The debris they are finding seems to be mostly passenger belongings, life vests, an oil slick from where they plane went down.

Agree @gregjrichards, it will be interesting to see what caused this plane to drop from the sky only minutes after take-off.

Someone's sweatpants, looks like someone's travel bag on the left, maybe a cell phone. :(

The Indonesia-based airline is known for its poor safety record.

Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyanialso arrived at the agency and met with its chief, seeking information about 20 finance ministry staff who were on the flight.

According to this report (from video at link) the plane went from 5,400 feet down to 3,650 feet within a minute.

Lion Air flight JT610 requested to return to base, with air traffic control losing contact with the pilots after approving the request, Yohanes Sirait, a spokesman for the country’s air navigation authorities, told Reuters.

189 people, Jesus. I can't imagine the terror they suffered. This reminds me of the Air France flight that went down in the ocean, all the passengers were found still strapped into their seats.
