GUILTY NY - Karina Vetrano, 30, jogger found murdered, Queens, 2 Aug 2016 #5 *First trial MISTRIAL*

What was the racial and age breakdown of the jurors? Do we know? I read 7 women and 5 men were on the jury, but hadn't heard any other demographic information for the jurors. It seems that the defense team did a good job of selecting a jury to have this trial end with a hung jury.

Karina Vetrano Murder Trial Wraps Up After Judge Blocks Video Evidence
Throughout the trial, the defense has struggled to overcome strenuous objections by the prosecution regarding evidence that could cast doubt on the case against Lewis. On Thursday, Judge Michael Aloise ruled that because any eye-witness testimony or discussion of video surveillance from around the park at the time of the murder would inevitably prolong the trial, he would not be allowing the defense to broach these subjects with witnesses.

According to Lewis' attorneys, the NYPD collected 16,000 hours of surveillance footage from around Spring Creek Park at the time of the murder, none of which show Chanel Lewis.

On Thursday, the defense attempted to call two witnesses, including a Verizon employee who was working on a telephone pole along the path that Lewis told investigators during his confession that he had used to enter the park (the defense claims the confession was coerced). The employee planned on testifying that he never saw Lewis enter or leave the park during the time the murder took place.

Jurors Begin Deliberating 'Magnetic' DNA in Vetrano Murder Trial
Moeller told jurors that there were no videos of Lewis in the vicinity of the crime scene, an argument that defense attorney Julia Burke tried to make during her closing statement Thursday. During the closing statements, Leventhal objected to all statements about lack of video featuring Lewis and Aloise sustained the objections.

Moeller acknowledged that the circumstantial evidence indeed looked bad for Lewis, but said that Lewis was the victim of a series of unfortunate coincidences. He urged jurors to also consider the unfortunate coincidences that led to the murder including that Karina Vetrano’s father Phil Vetrano declined to jog with her for the first time, that he had a “bad feeling” and that he found her body despite there being “tons of cops, police dogs and helicopters” at the scene.

“You have to give the same benefit of the doubt to Mr. Lewis as would the prosecution to Mr. Vetrano,” Moeller said.

Magnetic DNA?
Something the jurors can hang their hat on if they really believe its ok that KV was murdered.

This is not a mágic show.

I do not believe for one second he will get away with killing Karina.

The Queens Daily Eagle has reported some interesting trial details.
No log of people who entered the crime scene o_O

'. . .untold number of people entered the crime scene, potentially contaminating the site without anyone making a log of who was coming and going,. . .'
I wonder what else the jury heard that we don't know.

Moeller criticized the crime scene investigation as “sloppy,” particularly in the hours between when Phil Vetrano — her father — found Karina Vetrano’s body and picked her up and the time when her body and other evidence were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“You can’t blame Mr. Vetrano,” Moeller said. “You can’t even blame the police at this point [because] they were trying to figure out what happened.”

After that, however, an untold number of people entered the crime scene, potentially contaminating the site without anyone making a log of who was coming and going, Moeller said. In one glaring example of the lack of information, an unknown person covered Vetrano’s body with a yellow tarp of unknown origin, he said. The tarp was never swabbed for DNA.

Oh wow, really? I confess I haven't been following this case very closely, but holy wow, this one seemed like a slam dunk. I wonder if there was a lone holdout, or it was more balanced. Sounds like at least one juror applied unreasonable doubt here.

That is interesting considering 7 voted guilty and 5 voted not.

Gender bias. Racial bias. Whatever. The whole idea of being on a jury is to remove your personal bias and bigotry and evaluate the facts. Sadly, jurors (like politicians) are frequently not the best and the brightest. All I know is it would take a whole lot more “coercion” than six hours in a police station for me to confess to a brutal, senseless murder.

I agree. And did LE coerce his DNA under her fingernails? Geez.

Re QDE: As I began following what was happening during the trial as reported by the Queens Daily Eagle, I realized that other media outlets were not reporting in detail how the defense was making progress inside the courtroom.

As the trial progressed, I thought every defendant should receive Legal Aid attorneys of the quality & dedication of those who worked for CL, and I tried to comfort myself by thinking that at least a guilty verdict would not be overturned on the grounds of ineffective counsel.

After reading the last couple of articles written by QDE including the summations, I simply began hoping that deliberations would not result in a NG verdict, That's how concerned I was!

I think 5 jurors believing CL is NG is substantial. Perhaps, a new jury specialist. Perhaps, reducing the charges. Perhaps, a different prosecutor in the courtroom. I keep wondering if there is a Brendan Dassey effect (Making a Murderer) at work here.

I think that if cameras were allowed in the courtroom, we would better understand what happened. The coverage overall was sparse as far as the details went imo.
As you said, the MSM reports all varied. I just read one article last night where it was reported that although the DNA results from her neck and phone were a match, the DNA result from under her fingernails were inconclusive.I also read that the crime scene wasn't secured. I read at the beginning of the event, back when she was murdered that KV was raped but I haven't read a thing about rape, or attempted sexual assault at all.
Whatever happened in that courtroom, I think it's fair to say that in the end, with 5 jurors voting for a NG plea, that the prosecution didn't present a good enough case for a conviction.

I expected this.
Defense attorney knew some would pretend to believe in the garage he was going to oír forward.

The DNA alone would have meant "guilty" for me as a juror, never mind all the other stuff. How would his DNA get there if he wasn't there???? Inconclusive- I don't know??? What exactly does that mean? Could it have been his or not?
Unbelievable!

What!?!

From above link:

“Razzano testified about the DNA found on Vetrano's neck, nails and cell phone. In cross-examination, defense attorney Jenny Cheung, a DNA expert, suggested that Vetrano could have encountered Lewis’ DNA elsewhere or that someone else who arrived on the scene could have been transferred the DNA by accident.“

BBM Oh please. The defense's fairy tale, IMO.

WHOA! I just read the news about the hung jury....after 13 hours of deliberations?!? I am shocked.

I have to go back now and read what everyone here has to say about it. Just had to chime in before doing that.

Whoa.
