The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office continues efforts to locate the daytime killer of a Sodus couple shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday (10/22) at 29 Carlton Street in the Village of Sodus.

The execution style shooting left Joshua Edwin Niles, age 28, dead in his driveway. Amber Monique Washburn, age 24, was shot sitting in their vehicle. With the car in reverse, drifting backwards into the yard at 29 Carlton Street, she bled out as her autistic son sat in the back seat. The child was later pulled safely out of the vehicle.

The man ran through the backyard of one home near the shooting, and a resident there said the suspect was wearing “a dark hoodie and a green hat,” according to Stephen Sklenar, the Chief Deputy with the sheriff’s Office.

Niles is Childers' ex and the father of the daughter, 9, and son, 7, who had been living with their mother and her new husband Timothy Dean until May.

That all changed however when the couple was accused of child abuse and lost custody of the children to her ex, which is believed to have set the fatal events in motion.

Texas police charged in double homicide in upstate New York | Daily Mail Online

I am curious as to what happened in the child abuse case against Charlene Childers and Timothy Dean, two of the persons arrested in this case? Does anyone know?

I can't find anything other than the arrests and TD resigning as police chief. I can't believe they've done this to these poor kids (and their parents). Not to mention CC turning up to the vigil.

Josh' sister:
"I can't fathom why he would kill somebody he didn't even know," Gunkels said. "The other cop that got involved, I really just... I'm astonished. Like why would he even had followed suit? He had no merit in this at all!"

Gunkel explains that Childers lost custody of her kids to Niles in May. Gunkel says it was a heated custody battle. However, she adds, she never thought her brother and Amber Washburn, would lose their lives over it.

"Her [Charlene] doing what she did to my brother is just so shocking.. because he would never kept her kids from her ever," stated Gunkel. "I hope she gets life in prison."

A campaign has been started by Amber Washburn's sister to help Washburn's four-year-old son Josh Jr. and her parents after the tragedy.

Amber's sister writes that Josh Jr. has autism and is nonverbal. He's been put in the custody of Amber's parents who need help to care for the child.

Sister of Sodus murder victim: "We always suspected her... because of the custody battle"

Well, I have no idea why Charlene and her BF/hubby were charged with child abuse earlier, but it's quite apparent by their actions following (with the murders) that she couldn't care less about her children. So, the child abuse doesn't surprise me. The murder of their Dad is another form of child abuse, IMHO. Those little children are the ones who will suffer the long-term deepest hurt. What in the world were they thinking...that no one would suspect them? The stupidity of this woman (Charlene) is mind boggling.

Another arrest (maybe not related).

MOORE COUNTY, T.X. — The Acting Police Chief in Sunray Texas was arrested Friday for tampering with government documents, law enforcement officials say.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and the FBI arrested Joseph Flores at about 3 p.m. in Dumas on Friday for tampering with a governmental document.

However, authorities were not able to confirm the charges are related to the ongoing double murder homicide investigation of the former Sunray Police Chief Timothy Dean, 32, his wife Charlene Childers,25, or former Sunray police officer Bron Bohlar.

Timothy Dean and Charlene Childers both pleaded not guilty in a Wayne County court to murder charges stemming from a double homicide in Sodus in October.

[...]

[DA:]"We believe that the initial actions began in Texas with Mr. Dean traveling to Sodus, New York, and unfortunately for the Niles and Washburn families ... led to a very tragic result," Calarco said. "It's our belief and allegation that Mr. Dean was the one who pulled the trigger, obviously. The conspiracy theory and the acting together allegations would give rise to the murder charge against Ms. Childers as well."

Joe Damelio, Dean's attorney, said that if and when Dean's case goes to trial, he hopes community members — potential jurors — will pay more attention to the "facts of this case as they come in through the courtroom, and not through social media."

Sodus double homicide: Timothy Dean, Charlene Childers plead not guilty in court

Both Dean and Childers pleaded not guilty to charges. Both will be held at the Wayne County Jail with bail set for $100,000.

Childers is set to appear in court in December. Dean's trial is set to begin in January.

A third suspect, Bron Bohlar, was also arrested on conspiracy charges. He worked with Dean as a police officer in Texas.

March 12, 2019

"Lyons, N.Y. (WHAM) - Attorneys gathered in court Tuesday for a hearing about one of the suspects accused in the murder of a Sodus couple last fall.

Charlene Childers is one of three people charged in connection to the murders of Joshua Niles and Amber Washburn.

Childers was the mother of two of Niles' children; those children were living with Niles and Washburn in Sodus.

Charges filed against Childers, Dean, and a third man - Bron Bohlar - allege that Dean conspired with Childers and Bohlar to plan the murders, then drove up from Texas where he and Childers lived at the time to Sodus using a rental car that Bohlar paid for.

Bohlar later pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is scheduled to be sentenced in mid-June.

Attorneys argued in court Tuesday over whether Childers was read her Miranda rights at the appropriate time....

Childers went from 'person of interest' to shooting suspect

3/13/19

"LYONS — Charlene Childers went from a person of interest to a suspect in a Sodus double homicide over the course of four hours of questioning by a Wayne County sheriff’s office investigator.

In a Huntley hearing Tuesday afternoon before Wayne County Court Judge Daniel Barrett to determine whether investigators properly obtained statements from Childers, Det. Sgt. Roger LeClair testified under questioning by Wayne County Assistant District Attorney Christine Callanan that Childers was a “person of interest” even prior to bringing her in for questioning on Oct. 29...

LeClair testified that he was monitoring Childers’ movements following the shooting.

“Everybody was a person of interest,” he said under questioning by Childers’ attorney, Romolo Canzano.

LeClair testified that when Childers’ husband, Dean, was taken in by authorities in Texas working in conjunction with Wayne County investigators, he decided it was time to bring her in for questioning....

LeClair said at that time, about 3:55 a.m., he read Childers her Miranda rights. Those rights include the right to remain silent, as well as the right to an attorney.

LeClair testified that she agreed to continue with the questioning, and said she also agreed to hand over her phone and provide the password.

The investigator said he learned that there was a warrant for Childers in Texas related to a child abuse — along with Dean —and informed her of the charge. It was at that time, said LeClair, that she asked for an attorney and the questioning ended he said. All told, Childers was questioned from about 2:30 a.m. to 6 a.m., said LeClair.

Barrett will make ruling in the next few weeks as to whether sheriff’s investigators properly questioned Childers, and her attorney, Canzano, said after the hearing that there are some questions about whether police properly followed protocol....
Dean, the former police chief of Sunray, Texas, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree conspiracy. He is scheduled to have a Huntley hearing on March 22, while Childers has another pre-trial hearing April 11....

Bohlar is scheduled to be sentenced in June."
