"Taxpayers are on the hook for the team of prosecutors, which includes 11 deputy district attorneys from the six California counties where the crimes occurred. The list includes Sacramento, Contra Costa, Tulare, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Orange."

"Sacramento County residents are also responsible for paying for DeAngelo’s legal defense team. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael Sweet declared in open court that DeAngelo is indigent and has no money to pay for a private attorney."
"Each county would share the cost of their own employees coming to Sacramento and doing the case,” Grippi said."

Russia's 'Werewolf Killer' to spend rest of his life behind bars for murdering 80 'fallen women'

A former Russian policeman has been handed two life sentences after confessing to more than 80 murders from the 1990s and 2000s.

Mikhail Popkov will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was convicted of a total of 84 counts of murder and attempted murder.

He was convicted of killing 80 women and one man, another policeman, over a decades-long reign of terror in the Irkutsk region of Siberia.

The bodies of horrifically mutilated women were found with injuries so severe the murderer was dubbed the "Werewolf Killer" by Russian media.

"He clearly loved killing," prosecutor Alexander Shkinyov said after his sentencing yesterday, The Siberian Times reported.

"Some victims had 145, or even 170 knife wounds."
...
Discovered in isolated areas, almost all of the women had been raped. Popkov's killing career began in 1992, with his homicidal tendencies ignited after he suspected his wife had been unfaithful to him.

It's believed he continued killing up until 2010, after he'd left the police force.

His victims were aged between 16 and 40.

Punishing the 'immoral'

Excerpts from his confession were published by Russian news site Komsomolskaya Pravda, revealing Popkov's justification for the slayings.

He targeted women he viewed as being morally unfit, offering to give them rides in his car, often while wearing his police uniform.

Could case be dismissed, if accused, suffers a major health concern, as below??????

Philippoussis child rape case dismissed
Peter Mitchell
A California judge has dismissed child sexual assault charges against Nick Philippoussis because the Australian tennis coach "is completely incapacitated" and near death after suffering a massive stroke in jail.

Philippoussis, 68, faced spending the rest of his life behind bars after he was accused of repeatedly raping two nine-year-old girls he trained in San Diego.
......
Just over a year ago, when Philippoussis was held in San Diego County Jail after being unable to come up with $US9.2 million bail, he suffered the stroke and has been bedridden ever since, unable to communicate and being fed via a tube.

Prosecutors, detectives and the alleged victims' family members have been monitoring Philippoussis' health via his physician and the court heard during Wednesday's hearing in San Diego they were satisfied he will not be making a "meaningful recovery" and be fit to stand trial.
"The doctor essentially said he is a step above a vegetative state," Deputy District Attorney Garret Wong told AAP after the hearing.

"He can stay in this condition indefinitely, but he did not have a very optimistic prognosis for his survival.

"He said it is pretty much just the next event - whatever major event that may be whether it is an infection or another stroke it was not looking very hopeful.

"The doctor was pretty clear he did not anticipate Mr Philippoussis making any meaningful recovery - they are the words he used.
"At this point just given the fact he is completely incapacitated and incompetent, we didn't want this hanging over the head of the victims.

"So that was our reason to dismiss the case today."

Philippoussis was charged with 14 counts including oral copulation/sexual penetration with a child under 10-years-old and lewd acts upon a child.

He entered not guilty pleas before suffering the stroke.

They say he's indigent yet his house is worth $370,000, according to realtors. Marked down 10% for the ick factor of previous owner, that's still far from indigent, IMO. And now the trial costing 20 million, it seems no matter what there will never be justice for the victims of this guy.

Meet the Ventura County prosecutor trying the local Golden State Killer case

Dec. 16, 2018

"As the trial of the Golden State killer suspect inches nearer, a Ventura County prosecutor has been chosen to present the evidence of the 1980 Ventura killings of Lyman and Charlene Smith.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Cheryl Temple said she understands the gravity of the job and is honored to be entrusted with it. ...

Temple didn’t go into detail about her interest in the case, but it was noted by Ventura County District Attorney Greg Totten when deciding who would be sent to Sacramento. He said the decision happened organically.

“She is one of the most experienced capital case prosecutors in the county and possibly the state. She’s an exceptional trial lawyer and leader,” Totten said....

Ten of Temple’s 21 years as a prosecutor have been spent trying homicide cases. She has prosecuted and garnered convictions in murders involving sexual assault, domestic violence and multiple victims.

Temple said she prosecuted murders throughout the 2000s...

Temple was at DeAngelo’s Dec. 6 court hearing. She said that’s when he and his attorney were served with information regarding the allegations.

“Come April 10 of next year, we hope that they will have had enough time with the information provided to enter a plea and move the proceedings forward,” Temple said..."

Let's review...

"Prosecuting murders throughout the 2000's" would seem to suggest she's been prosecuting murders for the better part of two decades, right?

Yet the article then states, "ten of her 21 years as a prosecutor have been spent trying homicide cases".

So which is it? Ten years or almost 17 years(+/-)? If only ten years, why say she's been trying murder cases throughout the 2000's? She hasn't. She's only been trying murder/homicide cases since 2009. And that's ok. There's no shame in that. Why the article states otherwise is baffling to me. Is there a difference between "prosecuting murders" and "trying homicide cases" that I don't know about? There must be. You know Juan Martinez would grill "Go ask Alyce" on this discrepancy until she couldn't see or think straight.

A pic of DeAngelo when he was younger:

Here's the link: Golden State Killer suspect faces new murder charge. That makes 13 slayings linked to Joseph DeAngelo

VISALIA, Calif. – The man whom investigators believe is the Golden State Killer was charged with first-degree murder Monday in what is thought to be the first death in a string of slayings that stretched over a decade across California.

Joseph DeAngelo, 72, of the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights is accused of killing a College of the Sequoia professor, Claude Snelling, who was shot Sept. 11, 1975, as he thwarted the 2 a.m. PT kidnapping of his 16-year-old daughter.

That murder was attributed to a man originally dubbed the Visalia Ransacker, who would break into homes and collect keepsake items, leaving behind valuables, and often made himself a meal before sneaking out into the night. More than 85 burglaries in Tulare County, California, where Visalia is the county seat, were linked to the Visalia Ransacker; the last was at Snelling's house.

The Rolling Stone article says JJD lost weight, and the photo shows him looking way skinnier than when they caught him. Anyone know why?

He now looks like a scary, scrawny, sadistic old man. Sounds like his body is telling him: "Hey bub, the party's over!"

Pardon, but I'm behind in following this case and catching up.

Prosecutors from Contra Costa, Tulare, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Orange counties have agreed to a joint trial effort to be held in Sacramento and led by the city’s District Attorney’s Office. The case — from early motions to the trial itself — is expected to be among the largest in California’s history, lasting as long as 10 years and costing state taxpayers $20 million. However, Sweet warned DeAngelo, who was locked inside a courtroom cage and appeared to have lost weight, that he could be on the hook to pay back the costs at the trial’s conclusion.

In my area, a large metro area in the midwest, county, state and federal prosecution offices are highest on the career ladder for attorneys and judges. City prosecutors are considered lower on the ladder and don't always attract the top trial attorneys. Is that cause for some concern? To what degree will other, possibly more qualified, prosecutors on the team have an impact on managing the case?

Ohio is also experiencing a similar situation with the Wagner family, accused of killing 8 members of the Rhoden family in Pike County, OH. Six defendants, four of whom will be on trial for aggravated murder, conspiracy, and a host of other charges, all with death penalty specifications, all requiring defense teams of DP certified attorneys. With indigent defendants, it's looking to be very expensive, too. In the Rhoden family murder case, the lead prosecution attorneys are a state attorney from the AG's office and the county prosecutor. Basically, the Ohio AG's office is managing the prosecution. Should California be trying to do the same? Just wondering.

It's good to learn that in DeAngelo's case, there is a mechanism for the state to "claw back" some of the costs of his defense once the trial is completed. Ohio is doing the same as Cali by introducing legislation requiring the state to pay the high costs of death penalty cases like these. It's very expensive, especially when there are multiple victims (and in the Rhoden case) multiple killers are involved.

The city of Sacramento is in Sacramento county. The District Attorney's Office is part of Sacramento county's government and not the city.

1) Anyone hear what his life is like in jail?

2) Why hasn't he given an interview? I bet if a reporter tried hard he would give an interview! He's got nothing to lose. He knows he's going to spend the rest of his life in jail!

‘You Can Wear It Around Your Waist Or Around Your Neck:’ The Creepy Gift From The Golden State Killer Suspect
"Manager Julie Campbell waited on DeAngelo several times, and found him to be “very grumpy, very grouchy, [and] very loud.” He was always short with her, but it seemed to help when owner Charlene Carte teasingly called him “Mr. Happy” in an attempt to get him to lighten up.

After a while, Campbell got used to his unusual requests: Tuna salad with lots of extra onion. A large glass of water, no ice.

“You better not even have a sliver of ice or he’d yell very loud and let you know,” Campbell said.

On one of his early visits to the café, Carte served him a tuna salad.

“When I came up, there was cheese all over the table. He took it off the salad and threw it all over the table,” Carte said.

She asked him what was wrong and didn’t remember him mentioning not liking cheese or being allergic.

“There’s cheese all over my salad! What are you trying to do? Kill me?” Carte says he shouted at her."
