Corpus Christi capital murder suspect wants facial tattoos removed before trial

Joseph Tejeda, who is facing the death penalty for the death of Breanna Wood, made his request through his attorneys in a hearing on Thursday.

District Judge Jack Pulcher denied the request and told the attorneys he'll consider the issue after they become certified to defend a capital murder suspect. The judge also rejected attorney requests to lower his $1,000,000 bond or allow him out of jail.

The trial is expected to happen later this year.

Joseph Matthew Tejeda, a documented gang member with a criminal record, appeared in court.

Breanna Wood was last seen with Tejeda at a PMI market at the intersection of Tancahua Street and Hancock Avenue.

An inmate told police Tejeda said he shot Wood in the back of the head at his apartment across from the PMI. Then Tejeda broke Wood's arms and raped her corpse.

Earlier this week Tejeda appeared before a magistrate judge in the Nueces County Jail and asked for a court-appointed attorney. After the brief hearing, he blew kisses to an older woman in the gallery and flashed his middle fingers to the media.

His bail is set at more than a $1 million and includes an unrelated charge of burglary of a habitation.

A man who is facing the death penalty in slaying of a 21-year-old woman won't be able to wear civilian clothes during court hearings.

Joseph Tejeda is charged with capital murder and other crimes in the death of Breanna Wood, whose body was recovered in a box near Robstown in January 2017. He appeared in Judge Jack Pulcher's 105th District Court for a status hearing, shackled at the waist and wearing orange jail clothing.

This whole thing is a mess. Why did they want Tejeda killed, and how was his killing Breanna an even trade?

For nearly three months Fallon Wood searched for her daughter, Breanna, after she went missing.

She'd follow the same route, looking for the 21-year-old. Eventually she'd end up at Oleander Point at Cole Park.

"For some reason, it was just so peaceful," Wood said. "I would sit out on the rocks that lead out to the water, and I would just talk to her, saying 'Where are you? Are you OK? Call me.' "

As time passed and Breanna Wood remained missing, the questions turned from 'Where are you?' to a realization that she was likely gone. Still, Wood would sit at the park on the rocks. The ocean gave her peace.

"Nobody was there and I would just cry and scream and just talk to her ... hoping that she was still alive," Wood said. "It was a place that just gave me so much comfort."

Oleander Point at Cole Park could soon be the location of the Nueces County Victims' Memorial Garden, a place other than a cemetery where those like Fallon Wood who lost loved ones to homicide could go and reflect.

"This is not just about my daughter Breanna," Wood said. "This is for all victims."

The Parks and Recreation Advisory committee gave its unanimous approval to move forward with the memorial garden at a Wednesday evening meeting. During public comment, Wood — a four-inch binder in tow — presented the idea to them and the committee later considered the idea.

Wow. This is truly chilling. I hope they rot!! RIP Breanna. Do we know what was the motive or how they knew each other?

During a Friday Council of Judges meeting, Watts said 410 felony inmates are ready for trial and have been in the Nueces County jail for more than 100 days.

This is creating a backlog in the jails, said Nueces County Sheriff J. C. Hooper. He urged the judges to begin holding more trials.

Stith said Monday that a reevaluation of whether the courts will begin to hold more trials will happen at the beginning of September.
