One has to wonder how safe this young man will be out in the community. Even though there are many people in Bronx, it is also very small.

"In a recent instant, a group chased a 16-year-old teen into a Highbridge bodega and beat him once they found him hiding in the back aisle. Bodega owner Edward Lara, armed with a stick, and other store employees chased the attackers off.

He didn't know if they had weapons, but he felt he had to intervene."

How terrifying. It is not like bodegas have any protection. The bodega near my school is chock full of students each morning--- and sometimes I am in line as well. But, in the afternoon, it is not safe to go in. There is always really high energy and fights on the corner between the bodega and the park. After dark, it is not possible to be near the area. I don't know how the people who work in some bodegas do it, even with the bullet-proof glass.

I am impressed that they want training and support measures. They deserve it.

Judge sets date for first murder trial in Bronx bodega killing of Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz

DECEMBER 21, 2018

"THE BRONX — A tentative date was set on Friday for the first murder trial in the savage machete and knife killing of 15-year old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz.

Judge Robert Neary set a tentative date of Feb. 11, 2019.

Fourteen suspects were charged with murder, but only five are set to go on trial in the first round of court proceedings. That’s because these five were accused of first-degree murder.

The five set for trial are Elvin Garcia, Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago, Jose Muniz, Manuel Rivera and Jonaki Martinez-Estrella, who’s accused of plunging a knife into Junior’s neck, causing the fatal stab wound.

All five are alleged to have stabbed Junior with either knives or a machete. Police said Muniz was carrying the machete.

Pre-trial proceedings will be held starting January 21. It’s possible that defendants could ask to be severed from cases involving other suspects, so it’s not definite that all five will go on trial February 11th.

The men charged with first degree murder had a “torture” element as part of the indictment.

The other nine defendants are accused of second degree murder...."

Defense team in first ‘Junior’ murder case seeks to delay trial

JANUARY 20, 2019

"NEW YORK — Defense attorneys representing five men accused of murder in the first degree in the savage, June 2018 slaying of 15-year-old Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz outside a Bronx bodega planned to file a motion this week seeking a delay in the trial.

A source familiar with the motion said it will cite prejudicial, pre-trial publicity—and reference the dozens of social media sites devoted to the case, many of them on Instagram, along with multiple broadcast and online news specials that have focused on the killing. A total of 14 suspects tied to the Trinitarios gang have been charged in the murder.

Pre-trial hearings for five suspects charged with murder in the first degree are supposed to start Tuesday, Jan. 22. Elvin Garcia, Jonaiki Martinez Estrella, Jose Muniz, Manuel Rivera and Antonio Rodriguez Hernandez Santiago are accused of using the knives and a machete that inflicted lethal stab wounds to Guzman-Feliz...."

Junior’s parents, Lisandro Guzman and Leandra Feliz, arrived at court about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, but were taken to another location when it became clear Judge Robert Neary was holding a closed-door session first with defense attorneys and the prosecution team.

The defense lawyers were filing a legal motion Tuesday seeking a delay in the proposed Feb. 11 start for the first trial. The motion was expected to cite massive pre-trial publicity as a barrier to fair jury selection.

The five men being tried for first-degree murder include Elvin Garcia, Jose Muniz, Manuel Rivera, Jonakai Martinez Estrella, and Antonio Santiago Hernandez Rodriguez.

The bodega on East 183rd Street is taking part in the NYPD’s new program to prevent gang assaults and robberies....

Judge issues gag order in 'Junior' slaying case (with clip)

Feb 25, 2019

"...Nine of the 14 suspects accused of killing 15-year-old Lesandro ”Junior” Guzman-Feliz were due in court Monday. Only three of the suspects agreed to be present for their hearings. The others waived their right to appear before a judge.

The move didn't sit well with mother Leandra Feliz and the family's supporters, who spent the afternoon waiting to come face to face with the men accused of killing Junior.

The judge also issued a gag order in the case. All 14 suspects and their lawyers along with the prosecution are no longer allowed to talk to the media about the case.

Several suspects are due back in court on May 2. A trial date is expected to be set following the May court appearances."

Murder suspect accused of butchering 15-year-old boy outside a Bronx bodega with 13 others carries book about 'how to kill a prosecutor' into a court hearing

26 February 2019

"A gang member suspected of brutally murdering a 15-year-old boy outside a Bronx bodega turned up to court on Monday with a true crime book about a prosecutor's murder.

Kevin Alvarez, 19, is one of 14 believed Trinitarios gang members who dragged Lesandro Guzman-Feliz out of a New York convenience store and stabbed him to death in the street, in June 2018.

Appearing at the Bronx Supreme Court on the same day as nine others of his purported co-murderers, Alvarez was pictured carrying a book titled 'In Plain Sight: The Kaufman County Prosecutor Murders'.

Written by Kathryn Casey, the book details the brutal the murders of two Texas prosecutors, carried out by a former lawyer who enacted revenge on those responsible for convicting him of theft.

Alvarez smugly displayed the book's front cover behind his back on Monday morning, directing it towards the prosecution bench.

Prosecutors at the Bronx District Attorney's office have refused to speculate as to whether the defendant was trying to threaten them or send a message, according to the NY Daily News.

All lawyers involved with the case, including Alvarez's, are under a gag order issued by Judge Robert Neary, who has forbidden them from interacting with the media....

Prosecutors say it's Alvarez who can be seen dragging Feliz from the bodega door, as another gang member can be seen slashing at the defenseless teen with a machete...."

Man who allegedly OK’d attack that led to Junior’s death denied bail (with clip)

Feb 28, 2019

"THE BRONX -
Bail was denied Thursday for the man prosecutors say ordered the hit that led to the fatal stabbing of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz.

Feliz-Guzman, also known as Junior, was killed after being slashed in the neck last June by alleged members of the Trinitarios gang outside a bodega in Belmont.

Diego Suero, who is facing murder and conspiracy charges, did not say a single word in court. His attorney Jorge Guttlein argued that there is no evidence placing his client at the scene of the crime in Belmont the night Junior died and no proof of the prosecution's theory that Suero is the "boss of bosses" for the Los Surés sect of the Trinitarios....

Judge Robert Neary decided to remand Suero without bail. His next court date will be May 2.

A gag order was placed on the attorneys from both sides."

Torres say Gregg, who also goes by the name R.A. Gregg, convinced Junior's mother to sign a letter giving him permission to act on the family's behalf.

The councilman brought forward another alleged victim. Larry Winawer claims Gregg misled him in a car purchase on eBay. Winawer says he never got the original car title from Gregg and is out $5,000...."
