Han pasado ya más de 12 horas desde que los mineros entraran en el pozo. Se hizo una estimación de que los trabajos para realizar la galería podrían durar unas 24 horas si todo iba bien y dependiendo de la dureza del terreno. #RescateJulen

Translation:
It has been more than 12 hours since the miners entered the well. An estimation was made that the works to make the gallery could last about 24 hours if everything went well and depending on the hardness of the land.

Yes I believe he would be wedged in. @Hatfield thinks he might actually be in the plug and not in the airpocket below.
Depending on if he fell head first or feet first, I think being wedged in a small space with a little force from gravity his neck or chest could be bent in such a way to block the airway. I am sorry to say this but really when you think about his body being stuck in a small hole it is not possible to get enough oxygen.

Yes, it’s such a horrible situation when you find yourself wishing death to a child, but I couldn’t agree with you more, if he has suffered immensely only to have perished along the way, it is better that the falling of the rocks killed him instantly.
I know- God forgive me for even saying that, but it's just torture to think of what that little guy has gone through, if he survived. All sorts of things go through your mind, such as he could have become paralyzed and died a slow and miserable death- I would not wish that on anyone, especially a child. If the poor thing had to pass away, I'd rather it be instant than prolong suffering, and I am sure many of us here would prefer that. Still, we've had some miracles this week- maybe another miracle is about to occur before our very eyes!

The idea that the parents could have come across the sealed hole, unsealed it, thrown down the cup and candy, plus some of Julen's hair, and then perpetuated a hoax like this...I think it's way too far-fetched.

And then look at their faces in those photos :( We've seen parents of missing children too many times on these boards, and those expressions are just pure fear mixed in with their prayers for a miracle for their precious son.

That would be a reasonable plot line. These make that look normal. Really. We are accustomed to people accusing family members but these ones just took it to an insane level.

I'm been defensive of them from the beginning because of their other two children. It just seems so unfair. I know families like that who just can't catch a break. I have known families that have lost 2/3 of their children. Losing that 3rd child would have been more than they could handle. :(

The miners, according to the latest report, have excavated a length of one and a half meters of the 3.8 that they have to drill to reach the missing person, who fell to a well on January 13. In addition, specialized agents of the Civil Guard have carried out during this morning two microvoladuras in the gallery that is excavated to look for Julen, when encountering with the hardness of the land. This is the most dangerous part of this rescue operation, involving eight miners displaced from Asturias, who descend to undertake work in pairs every 40 minutes, carrying their own oxygen, and ten civil guards and eight firefighters. Like Elainera has said they had some issues early on which began the delays. I have worked on drilling rigs years ago and I remember most of the steps.

The first step they had to do is regular land escavating to flatten out the area around the hole so they can bring in the large drilling rig which is a large truck that does the drilling. That truck can turn the drill pipe column and allows changing of each of the sections of the drill pipe as they go down. Large oil wells have a fixed platform but in this operation they are using a drilling truck rig.

What a lot of people dont realize is to drill a well that deep, it takes sections of pipe called a drill column and each pipe is usually only about 20 or 30 feet long. So as they go down they have to clamp off the drill column pipe and attach another section of pipe to keep going down. Each section of pipe one at a time gets attached as they go down.

The other thing unique about this 2nd hole they are drilling is the diameter is very large to fit the human cage. The larger diameter hole means they had to use a special drilling bit or method to get a large diameter hole like that. Normally water wells dont have to be nearly that large of diameter like the one the boy is stuck in is rather small diameter.

The other thing that most people dont realize is the drill bit at the very bottom of the drilling pipe column gets dull often. Then what happens is they have to pull up the entire length of drilling pipe back up to the top and remove each section of pipe as they go in order to get to the very bottom one to change out the drill bit. The drill bits are usually commercial diamond tipped drill bits that have rotating edges but even they get dull and have to be changed out if the rock is hard that they are drilling through. Then once the bit is changed then they start all over attaching each section of pipe as they go down.

Once the hole is drilled then they have to put in the entire "casing pipe" which shores up the edges of the hole and keeps any dirt or rocks from falling back into the hole. That casing pipe is also in sections of length due to the length of the hole which is about 300 feet total depth.

Every time they screw on a new section of pipe it takes a little time. The workers can do it fast but still it takes a little time.

All these types of things add up to it taking longer than most people realize.

Here is a video that shows one being dug

Thank you so much - really helpful!

I would have expected it to be reported if anything like that had been done :( If they could have got a camera down to see exactly where he was in the hole, then I think they could have tried that, but if they can't tell from the top where he is?

I haven't even seen any updates about them putting oxygen down the hole to increase oxygen levels down there. And it does surprise me if they haven't done that?

From elpais: . Blockage. When a robotic camera was lowered into the borehole, it hit a blockage 71 meters below the surface. Rescuers tried to remove this blockage using various methods but only succeeded in taking out 31 centimeters of earth. This is when alternative rescue plans began to be considered.
