Article from 2014:
[h=3]COLD CASE: 45 years old and now re-opened[/h]
We dug deeper into another mysterious disappearance. What happened to Buddy Heflin? We found there is new evidence in this 45 year old case.

Some say Buddy Heflin was mixed up with the underworld, the Dixie mafia, and was caught up in a vicious circle of crime. His ex-wife, Alexis Heflin, drove to WLBT from Huntsville, Alabama.
"He moved here and he got involved with some people that were involved in criminal activities and I believe he tried to get out," said Alexis Heflin.

The book "Mississippi Whispers" reveals him as a cavalier charmer working at Kroger in Jackson in 1969.

I went to the sight of the old Baker Motel next to Medgar Evers Boulevard. It was reportedly a haven for criminal activity, and it was the last place Buddy Heflin was known to be living.

Valerie Leary also lives in Huntsville and wrote the book for her aunt.

"Enforcement agencies stated this motel was known to be connected to the underworld," said Valerie.

Searching for answers, his family says the last known sighting of 25 year old Buddy was New Year's day 1969 in Starkville. That was the last time anyone heard from Buddy.

Was John Lloyd "Buddy" Heflin going to rat out the bad guys? Did they kill him and throw his body in the Mississippi river as claimed?

"Before he knew it he was involved in something way over his head and the only way out was to continue doing what they told you or they killed you and I think they killed him," said Valerie.

Or did the frightened young man assume another identity and deliberately disappear? Was his body ever found?
The family does not believe he is alive.

John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin is a U.S. Army Veteran who was last by his wife, Alexis Heflin, on November 21, 1968 in Starkville, Mississippi. On November 21, 1968, Alexis Heflin moved with the couples two sons to Chicago, Illinois and John Heflin went to Jackson, Mississippi to work at a Kroger Grocery Store with his friend, Earl Burch. John Heflin was reportedly last seen by his sister, Willie Mae Holland, on January 1, 1969 when his mother brought him to the sister’s residence to meet up with a friend of his for a ride. According to the Doe Network, an International Center for Unidentified and Missing Persons, John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin was arrested for suspicion of burglary in Jackson, Mississippi on September 21, 1967. John Heflin was later arrested on December 6, 1968 in Greta, Louisiana on vagrancy and drug charges and the case was later dismissed on December 9, 1969. Rumors have surfaced that John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin may have been killed near Jackson or Vicksburg, Mississippi and thrown into the Mississippi River. When John Heflin left his sister’s house with his friend, the friend apparently gave him a ride to a man’s house in Longview, Mississippi. The friend overheard John Heflin arguing with the man and when John Heflin came out, he was crying. When the friend asked John Heflin what was going on, John Heflin said he could not tell him because it would put his life in jeopardy. His friend urged John Heflin to go to the police, but John Heflin refused because he said that the man said he would kill his family. John Lloyd “Buddy” Heflin was 23 to 24 years old at the time he went missing in January 1969. John Heflin is a white male who stands 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet tall and weighed approximately 160 to 185 pounds at the time of his disappearance. John Heflin has brown hair and hazel eyes. There's something I don't get; according to some sources "A friend gave him a ride from her sister's home". Who was that friend? Where did they go? Was it Gail Wofford? Was the last sighting of Buddy the meeting with that man who made him cry or that happened before New Year's Day?

Sometimes it seems that Gail and Buddy went to the Longview couple's home before the meeting with his family.
