The FL senate has voted for a bill to provide funding to families to rebury their boys - http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/...ill-to-rebury-reform-school-students/55282250

The governor just signed the bill into law. http://www.tbo.com/news/crime/scott...l-memorial-burial-of-exhumed-bodies-20160330/
The new law requires the state to pay up to $7,500 to families for funeral and reburial expenses. It also would require officials to preserve records, artifacts and remains found on the school site. Lastly, the legislation would create a task force charged with devising plans for a memorial and figuring out what to do with any unidentified or unclaimed remains.

Cooper said that when Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and Attorney General Pam Bondi made heartfelt informal apologies at a public meeting in January to him and others who were tortured, it caused him to break down.

I'm glad that they are getting that at least

“The survivors of abuses at the Dozier School have suffered horrible physical and psychological damages that have plagued them for their entire lives,” Representative Tracie Davis said in a statement about the HR 1335/SR 1440 bill.

Last year, the Florida Legislature designated a task force to determine what, exactly, Florida should do with the bodies and what type of memorial should be created to remember the victims.
Ultimately, the task force decided to recommend to place the bodies in Tallahassee and create two memorials -- one in Tallahassee and one in Jackson County.

The bill is moving through both the Florida House and Senate.

On 4/7/17, the judicial committee voted for a formal apology, site preservation and memorial, and most importantly to pursue the abusers of the White House Boys.

“When legislators shake your hand, hug you and are crying it reinforces all the things I’ve said over the years. It validated me as a Ranger, as a soldier and that I told the truth.”Retired U.S. Army Captain Bryant Middleton made that statement moments after the Florida House of Representatives’ judicial committee voted unanimously Thursday, April 6, to apologize to all the men who were sent to the Dozier School for Boys in both Marianna and Okeechobee.
But, more importantly, that committee also voted unanimously to form a team to hunt down former employees of those schools who were involved in the beatings and sexual molestations of the young boys.
The captain then added: “They’re going to get Tidwell, leave the White House in place, and form a team to go after those people? I don’t know, but I think we won!”
Tidwell is the one-armed man in Marianna who doled out some of the most brutal beatings at the Marianna school. He is still alive and is living somewhere in Marianna.

Are there still boys that are unidentified?
yes, there were. The last 40 of the 50 unidentified boys was reinterred just a few days ago (mid March 2019)
"Now the last of more than 50 unidentified boys unearthed at the school in 2015 have been reinterred in a Tallahassee Cemetery; far away from the grounds where they suffered unspeakable horrors."
40 victims of the Dozier School for Boys find final resting place

"Each grave is marked with a number, in case any future attempts to identify the remains are successful families can be notified... Many also believe there could be more than 100 boys still at Dozier, that have not been discovered."

This is one of the more horrible threads on WS. How could they? The perps, I mean. Some things "regular" people can never understand.

It's good to know that some steps are being taken to acknowledge the situation that existed and deal with the murderers. And I hope and pray that they get all of the deceased children off of the properties where they were killed.

Florida, the land of sunshine? Every day must have looked grey and bleak to the young prisoners. They must have felt that they risked beatings or death every single day.

I agree, teedie2. This thread has been active for 10 years and 4 months; next month will mark 10 years since I posted my first news link to the thread. That's only a drop in the bucket of time this horrible place was harming boys and scarring them for life.

It's hard to realize how long the victims and their families have sought both justice and healing for both themselves and the students who died and were buried there. The first reports of abuse were in the early 1900s after the "reform school" had been open for just a few years. There were decades of reported abuses noted in state inspections. Surviving victims voiced this for decades without anyone really listening. The facility remained open until 2011. The state of Florida finally formally apologized to victims in 2017 for the abuse that occurred there. No one has ever been criminally charged.

Possibly 27 additional graves found on Dozier School grounds

Evidence of 27 human remains was uncovered on the grounds of the former Dozier School for Boys reform school in Marianna, Florida.

In a letter obtained by First Coast News to the Jackson County Board of County Commissioners, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis writes that he is aware of the discovery of 27 possible new grave sites, and offers his assistance with Jackson County going forward.

Even if most of the abusers are now deceased, those murdered boys still need a voice from beyond the grave.
One of the most chilling cases ever.
There must have been more schools like this ?
Not sure some foster care homes are better, but warehousing children never seems to work out well !

Entire Dozier School campus will be searched for graves, state officials say
June 20, 2019
TALLAHASSEE -- For decades, survivors of Florida’s infamous Dozier School for Boys have said there are more secrets in the ground at the Marianna reformatory where hundreds of children were whipped, beaten and abused.

Among the thousands of boys who passed through the now-shuttered campus in its 111-year history, they say more than a hundred may have been buried in its soil. But though researchers in the last few years have identified 55 burials on Dozier’s grounds since its closing, there has never been a full search for what survivors claim are more of their brothers who might lie under the campus’ tall grass and pine trees.

State officials said Thursday that they will survey the entire 1,200-acre campus for the first time, after workers earlier this year stumbled upon 27 possible “clandestine” graves not far from Dozier’s official burial grounds. The campus-wide search will use existing radar-like laser mapping data to detect abnormalities that warrant more on-the-ground investigation. They are also still probing the possible graves and could answer as early as the next few weeks whether they contain previously unidentified human remains.
