A 5 year-year-old went missing in the Stanislaus River late Sunday afternoon near Knights Ferry, authorities said.

As of 6:30 p.m., several agencies were searching for the girl, who had been in the river with adult family members, some of whom were found by rescuers clinging to trees and brush.

The girl fell in the river near the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge at about 5 p.m., according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

Family members and bystanders tried to rescue the girl but were unable to reach her.

Firefighter Thrown From Boat During Search For Missing Stanislaus Girl, Highlighting Water Danger

[...]

According to the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, water conditions are so dangerous that a search and rescue boat involved in Tuesday’s search got hung up in some trees – throwing a firefighter off the boat.

The firefighter was able to climb back onboard and get out of the vegetation, authorities say, but the incident underscores the dangers search crews are facing.

Even when it looks like flows are down, authorities are warning people to stay out of the water.

Family and friends of Ortiz are staying along the river until she is found.

Stanislaus River reducing by more than half to help find missing 5-year-old

[...]

At midnight on Wednesday, officials began the process of reducing the flow of water from New Melones Dam, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office. This will continue throughout the day until sunrise on Thursday, March 21.

The decision to reduce the river flow comes after two days of searching on the dangerous river, where at one point a fire boat capsized due to the river conditions. No one was injured.

Matilda Ortiz was revealed to be the missing 5-year-old who slipped into the Stanislaus River on March 17.

“This window of opportunity with a lower river flow will allow for more resources to help with the search,” said Sheriff Jeff Dirkse. “We have been working closely with our partners in public safety to put together a plan that will hopefully help us to locate Matilda Ortiz.”
