Man in court accused of murdering French film-maker

A man accused of murdering French film-maker Laureline Garcia-Bertaux and dumping her body in a shallow grave was due to appear in court for the first time today.

Kirill Belorusov, 32, allegedly strangled the 34-year-old at her home in Kew earlier this month before trying to conceal the body.

Fashion blogger Ms Garcia-Bertaux, who worked with Dame Joan Collins on the 2018 short film Gerry, was reported missing on March 5 by colleagues at PR firm Golin.

Police discovered her body in a shallow grave in her back garden. She had been strangled.

Kirill Belorusov, 32, with French-born Laureline Garcia-Bertaux

Belorusov spoke only to confirm his name and nationality.

He told the court: "I was born in Russia but I have an Estonian passport."
I wonder where he was born, was it in what was the Russian republic of Estonia, or in some other part of the Soviet Union, as he's 32 years old, and it's only 28 years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. From his name my guess is that he's not ethnic Estonian, but belongs to the Russian minority in Estonia, or perhaps he's Belarusian, judging by his surname.

Laureline Garcia-Bertaux, 34, was found naked, bound and wrapped in bin bags in a flower bed in Kew after she was allegedly killed by her former boyfriend Kirill Belorusov.

The Old Bailey was told Belorusov, 32, owed Ms Garcia-Bertaux a large amount of money and made constant excuses to avoid repaying her, even claiming he was dying of cancer.

In November last year the victim had begged Belorusov to give her the money, texting him: "I don't think you realise how bad the situation is! I can barely pay my rent this month and food for myself and the dogs!"

The defendant told her his life "isn't any easier", later claiming he was suffering the ill effects of his "meds", jurors heard.

Film producer 'strangled by callous ex-boyfriend', court told

Prosecutor Oliver Glasgow QC said: “Kirill Belorusov tricked Laureline Garcia-Bertaux into believing that he was going to help her, he deceived her with promises of settling his debt to her and he lied to her about the house he had found that she could move into.

“Quite how Kirill Belorusov thought he was going to play out this charade remains to be seen, but clearly at some point he decided to kill Laureline Garcia-Bertaux.

“Having killed her he did all he could to get away with murder – he buried her body in the garden in order that he could leave the country before she was found, he sent messages to her friends in order that they might believe she was alive and well.

“It is difficult to conceive of someone behaving in a more calculated or callous manner.”

Jurors were told Belorusov had shown the victim pictures copied from a property website of a four-bed house for sale in Kingsdown, Kent.

After allegedly killing her, Belorusov bought duct tape, plastic sacks and beer, jurors heard.

Officers found her naked body wrapped in bin bags in Kew on March 6 after friends raised concerns over messages he sent from her mobile phone and examined a flower bed in the flat, the Old Bailey was told.

Oliver Glasgow QC, prosecuting, said: "After carefully removing the earth they discovered that a body had been buried in the garden.

"It was Laureline Garcia-Bertaux. She was naked; her feet were bound and her hands were tied behind her back; there was a ligature around her neck; and she had been wrapped in bin bags.

"Once her body was examined it became apparent that she had been strangled to death and buried in the garden at some point during the weekend that Kirill Belorusov had spent with her."

Belorusov, who denies murder, had broken up with her months before and got in touch claiming he had found a new home for her and wanted to pay back money he owed her, the jury heard.

His DNA was found on a ligature tied around her neck after he was arrested in Estonia six days later and extradited back to the UK on March 20, the jury heard.

Mr Glasgow said he had accessed the internet via his phone at his alleged victim's home on March 4.

He added: " In other words, having killed her and buried her in the garden, he sent false messages from her phone to cover his trans and remained at her home address until he thought it safe to leave on the Monday morning.

"Everything he had said to her friends and the police was a lie, and he lied because he had murdered Laureline Garcia-Bertaux.

"It is the Crown's case that, no matter what may have happened during the weekend that Kirill Belorusov spent with Laureline Garcia-Bertaux (double corr), there is nothing that this defendant can say to excuse what he did to her.

Mr Glasgow told jurors that Ms Garcia-Bertaux was "full of aspirations" and had worked as a producer in the television and film industry.

Belorusov worked in nightclubs and bars and claimed to have worked as a stuntman and as a casino bodyguard for high rollers, jurors were told.

The prosecutor said the defendant also claimed to have been in the army and "trained to kill without a trace".

The couple met in 2009 and split up in 2017, after Ms Garcia-Bertaux complained that he was a "slob" and would "needle her about her weight".

Filmmaker found in flower bed was killed by ex-boyfriend who owed her 'large amount of money', court hears

You're welcome. I know it's hard to get an insight from second hand reports, but he seems like a total fantasist.

Yes I agree. A fantasist, and cold and calculating. It seems Laureline still trusted him although they had broken up. How sad for her, and for her dogs. :(

I wonder how much he owed her. How much is "a large amount" nowadays, and in their social circle?
