Yes,I agree.
Christchurch even has a memorial concerning 9 11,to me this is what mateship is,standing together in time of need.

Christchurch Firefighters Memorial — Memorial Mapping: Transnational 9/11 Memorials

I did not know that. It's touching, and makes me feel a little bad about some of the tension on this thread that should be about supporting the victims. By the way, I had never heard the term "mateship" until this evening. I like it! A little cultural diffusion, maybe :)

It's a small nation without a lot of social safety nets (socialis denocracy) and a pretty unified society from what I've seen, so no. The things that tend to increase the risks of a madman opening fire aren't as apparent in NZ from what I've seen. Overall angst. Loneliness. Fear. Financial stress.

Not like here.
So mental illness is tied to social safety nets? I need to see a link for that.

One time I was chatting on an American Forum regarding our gun laws, they were quite horrified that our constitution never gave us the right to bear arms..I had to remind them that we started out as a penal colony, the Red Coats were not about to start handing out guns to us lol.

I think your post is a tie with first. :)

The thing is RANCH, NZ is a beautful country with a wonderful peaceful population who are filled with empathy for their fellow citizens and that creates a harmonistic happy life. ‘Fact is NZ doesn’t suck. NZers are travellers and they see the world and then they come home. And when they get home they say “lucky us, we live in a sane and beautiful land and we also make a delightful cold climate pinot noir...we will live happily ever after in the land of the long white cloud. No, NZ does not suck. It’s taken a blow, but this country is really creating the definite guidebook on how to move on from somthing horrid like this with rational decisions made with conviction. Go NZ!
I want to make it clear to all that I never said that New Zealand sucks nor do I feel that way.

Secret trials? That's horrible. They don't even have fair trials? I'm learning all too much about New Zealand and my heart goes out to the poor inhabitants.

Poor inhabitants? A childhood friend of mine moved there with her two young children and had a third there. She was ANGRY when she learned everything they got there- free midwife who came to her house for meetings, free lactation specialist who came to her home for free after the birth, her oldest who had severe asthma who was hospitalized several times in the states, NEVER had an asthma attack like he did in the states again. (He's now about 30). Free, high quality health care. Excellent public school education. A beautiful, large home on six acres of land. Amazing neighbors. Calmness. Peace.

In 2019, their international happiness ranking is 8th out of the world. Ours is 19th.

"He said the happiness revealed in the survey derives from healthy amounts of both personal freedom and social security that outweigh residents having to pay "some of the highest taxes in the world"."

New Zealand ranked in top 10 happiest nations

Let's stop bashing this beautiful gem of a nation. Our reputation as ugly, arrogant Americans need to change and it starts with each of us.

To bash these people and this lovely nation at this time is reprehensible and I'm ashamed that any sleuthed would act in such a way.

Beautiful nation.

Yes. Absolutely. BRB.

Found in a few seconds:

"The current global economic crisis is expected to produce adverse mental health effects that may increase suicide and alcohol-related death rates in affected countries. In nations with greater social safety nets, the health impacts of the economic downturn may be less pronounced. Research indicates that the mental health impact of the economic crisis can be offset by various policy measures. This paper aims to outline how countries can safeguard and support mental health in times of economic downturn. It indicates that good mental health cannot be achieved by the health sector alone. The determinants of mental health often lie outside of the remits of the health system, and all sectors of society have to be involved in the promotion of mental health."

The suspect is an amoral lunatic.

Media has, in some form of ignorance, broadcast the idea that a Caucasian man killing 50 praying Muslims in a Mosque is an act of racism. It's absurd. Is it that hard to find an educated journalist?

Hitler mixed up race and religion to the extent that German people believed that snuffing Judaism was racially purifying.

I don't know much about him. Or whether he suffers a mental illness. But I think most terrorists probably do. Of some sort.

Are most mass murderers psychopaths?

This suspect is described as being somewhat antisocial, he most likely lied about bitcoin investment funding travels, he is jobless, aimless, wanting a goal - to belong to something bigger than himself, wifeless, girlfriend-less and more or less an aging loser who blew his inheritance on travels starting 2010. In 2019, he has nothing to do, so he finds an online group of mentally ill people and follows their advice.

Three people have been arrested for sharing the live video feed. They must be like-minded - mentally ill or very young and impressionable.

Obviously a man who bursts into a room of people and starts shooting is not normal. I'm a bit confused by requests for proof that a man who is this abnormal needs proof of abnormality.

"Good mental health is integral to human health and well being. A person’s mental health and many common mental disorders are shaped by various social, economic, and physical environments operating at different stages of life. Risk factors for many common mental disorders are heavily associated with social inequalities, whereby the greater the inequality the higher the inequality in risk.

It is of major importance that action is taken to improve the conditions of everyday life, beginning before birth and progressing into early childhood, older childhood and adolescence, during family building and working ages, and through to older age. Action throughout these life stages would provide opportunities for both improving population mental health, and for reducing risk of those mental disorders that are associated with social inequalities."

"The World Health Organization has described poverty as the greatest cause of suffering on earth. This article considers the direct and indirect effects of relative poverty on the development of emotional, behavioural and psychiatric problems, in the context of the growing inequality between rich and poor. The problems of children in particular are reviewed. Targets to reduce inequality have been set both nationally and internationally."

Do you have a link that shows this killer was a product of poverty?

Yes. I'm with you. Certainly there's something wrong with someone who does something like this. Murdering babies at a school. Ramming a truck into an innocent crowd. Shooting down people praying in church. Blowing up a government building full of workers. Massacring people at a concert or bar. Flying planes into buildings or into the ground. Mowing down people in movie theaters. Killing people in mosques.

No doubt. There's something abnormal about such creatures.

I guess when it comes to the term mental illness, it depends if one defines that as having a personality disorder like antisocial or something more stereotypical like psychosis. You know? So I don't know his background with any of that.

I guess the solution is to rid the world of poverty.

Then mental illness will disappear along with evil and everyone will be safe from deranged killers.

No doubt from his writing he had an obsession with what he called invaders taking what he considered as his and killing off the future of 'his people'
He always veered back to birth rates.
Maybe more of a thought process. He was able to kill because he saw 'them' as less than.
Nationalism was the cause. IMO

That's a sarcastic response. Clearly that wouldn't rid the world of mental illness and evil. But you asked I supplied the research. It is fact that the incidence of mental illness in a nation is reduced when there are social safety nets.
