FL FL - 'Fort Myers 8' (1 now UID) WhtMales Buried in Woods, Mar'07

here are some possibles that i don't see on rule outs:

Clearwater is a couple of hours away, but the height, weight, time and lifestyle seem like a good possibility. especially scar and noted fracture on: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

time, circumstance/lifestyle, proximity. bears resemblance to a few of the sketches.

The NAMUS rule outs are limited to two MPs, wondering if CarlK received a broader list from Det. Strassel?

The article says she has a limited amount of availability a week to work the case, so I am hoping she is receptive to sleuthing possibles.

bumping this thread up...Can't believe they still are not any closer to finding the identities or the killer. Do they think this was the work of a serial killer or what? You'd think that this would be huge news! Also how could they have not noticed these bodies for over 10 years!!!!!!

They're pretty sure that the killer was serial murderer Daniel Conahan (AKA the Hog Trail murderer). His area of operation was Southwestern Florida (where Fort Myers is located), and His M.O. was to lure young male drifters into the woods on the pretext that he would pay them to pose nude for bondage-style photos. Once he got them restrained, he would then murder them.

He is on death row in Florida, but he has only been convicted for one murder. He is believed to be responsible for at least a dozen murders.

I just saw a feature on his case on the Investigation Discovery (ID) Channel last week.

I emailed the case manager about this missing person to see if he's been compared, Kenneth Edward Quattlebaum: Kenneth Edward Quattlebaum – The Charley Project

I didn't really find much out there on his disappearance.

His disappearance date, physical description, age, and location don't rule him out as a potential match. February 12, 1994, 30 year old white male, 5'11 lbs and 160 lbs, black hair and brown eyes, missing from Richland County, SC.

Plus, he's not in NamUs and I can't find any information on whether DNA or dental records have been available for matching.

The Fort Myers 8 reconstructions really do seem pretty similar to one another and some of the sketches seemed like they could fit. All in all, I didn't want Mr. Quattlebaum to fall through the cracks without being looked at closer, especially with the media reports that tips have dwindled.

What's the scoop on these skeletons? Are 5 of the 8 still unidentified after all this time?

Remains of 8 humans were found in Fort Myers a decade ago, 5 still unidentified
FORT MYERS, Fla. It was once said to be the largest excavation of human remains in Florida history. And Fort Myers Police call it their most challenging case ever.

Eight unidentified human skeletal remains were found in the woods off Arcadia Street more than ten years ago.

In 2007 a land surveyor stumbled across a skull. Since then, only three of the eight bodies have been identified.
Forensic Anthropologist Heather Walsh-Haney recalls that day. She walked through the brush to the location where the remains were found to find law enforcement investigating eight sets of human bones. All of the remains were found in the same area and all were buried under ground.

This young man was just entered a couple of days ago as an MP in Namus, and it just got me to thinking about a UID in this case.

If anyone is wondering, the newspaper for Robert Jacobs is in the 11 Feb 1985 Philadelphia Inquirer. (Pages 1-4 H)

This guy just showed up today in NamUs:

Frank Estes Powell

He fits pretty closely to this guy from the Fort Myers 8:

DoeNetwork Case 1033UMFL 1033UMFL
NamUs UP Case 7630 The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

His distinctive features are his prominent nose, strong cheekbones and very narrow jawline. This John Doe has similarly distinctive facial features.

His height and age are within range. He also has history of orthodontics, as does John Doe.

The one negative is the timeframe. Frank was last heard from in Dec'05. The FM-8 were found in Mar'07. They were believed to have died from 1980 to 2000. I don't know what they are basing the estimate on, but the one-year timeframe is quite a bit off from the 5-7 year estimated postmortem interval.
Man, looking at the new picture, it even looks more like him..

Fort Myers police hope for IDs after face reconstruction of five men found dead in 2007

More than a decade after the remains of eight men were found in an east Fort Myers field, police are again showing the possible faces of the victims, this time updated with modern techniques.

On March 23, 2007, eight sets of skeletal remains were discovered off Arcadia Street. Fort Myers police investigators at the time said the men may have died as the result of criminal activity sometime between 1987 and 2001.

No cause of death had been determined on any of the victims, police said.

"We ask that the public come forward if they know someone is missing," Fort Myers police Chief Derrick Diggs said at a media briefing Monday. "We hope to resolve family concerns about loved ones and shed some light on this."

It thought it might be worth (re-)posting this old article because it has a picture of Erik Cohler, one of the three victims who was identified. Sometimes serial killers have a particular type, so the other, unknown victims could have had a similar look to Cohler.
