That one house looks completely obliterated, down to the basement, while the one standing next to it also has substantial damages.

Just before 5 am. One fatality, two injured. It's hard to believe anyone survived that. It sounds like they would have all been in their beds asleep.

These photos are even more dramatic:

It's utterly destroyed by the blast, but no fire. Interesting

I wonder if the blast was so powerful, it obliterated all of the oxygen in the immediate area, making fire impossible? Just a thought from my rudimentary knowledge of three things needed to produce fire: spark, oxygen, stuff to burn (fuel). IMO MOO

My grandparents home exploded from a propane gas leak in 1999 and there was no fire.

Long life neighbor was outside during the explosion and actually described seeing the windows bow out, the whole house bowed out wards, then catastrophic boom.

My grandmother died instantly while in the yard as the force made her hit a tree. Grandfather died weeks later from his injuries. He was inside. My uncle was in the basement trying to find the source of the leak. House fell on top of him but he survived. Barely, but he did. If it wasn’t for the neighbors who came running to their aid to pull them out immediately, risking their own lives.

Sorry for the derail, hits close to home if this was indeed an accidental gas explosion :(

wow
that is incredible

This occurred about 15 minutes from me. The growing theory is still natural gas explosion, but the investigation is ongoing.
The articles do provide an update that one of the injured victims was released last night while the other remains in critical condition. The WLKY article (third link) has a video that shows cctv footage of the explosion from a distance.

24 hours later, here's what we know about the house explosion in Jeffersonville

How does one get an increased amount of natural gas in the interior of a home?

Does this come from a leaking gas stove or a water heater malfunction?

A malfunctioning gas valve on a gas appliance would do it. The fact that they know this means the gas meter was functioning.

30 some years ago a neighbor's house blew up like this. Fortunately they were out of town at the time. The house was about 1/4 mile away from mine. I was asleep with bedroom window open and the blast woke me up. I did not know what it was, thought I may have been dreaming.

It was propane gas, but that doesn't really matter. Gas is gas. The house looked much like this one, but worse.

I found an old article about my grandparents home explosion as I was trying to see if I could find images of it to compare (I got the year incorrect and I cannot believe I was a year off :( )

Showing comparison about how truly people can come together during a tragedy as this. Long time neighbors. Having compassion to help.

As Mr. Rogers always said, “Look for the helpers”

We read so much most times about truly awful evil humans on this site.

Always look for the helpers. Please forgive me as reading this has made me cry. Bob that was interviewed is my dad. He was so truly heartbroken.

'Courageous' neighbors praised after fatal blast
