The 52-year-old cop, who has 28 years of experience with Niagara Regional Police, suffered serious injuries in the incident, the SIU said.

Following an investigation into the matter, Tony Loparco, the director of the SIU, said he has reasonable grounds to believe that Donovan “committed criminal offences” in relation to the shooting.

Wow

I wonder what's happening with Constable Parker? Internal Affairs? Discipline? Dismissal?

-so far, not a word.

This might be a partial answer to your question JDG - the last paragraph from the article linked above.

A parallel Ontario Provincial Police investigation has been launched into the case as well to ensure police procedure was followed leading up to the incident.

Imo, this means looking into whether Parker should have even been employed there. A few people might have to answer to this part of the investigation.

Thank you. That's what I get for scanning. lol

Many defence attorneys are questioning that Donovan has been released on a 'promise' to attend all court dates.

They consider that a 'privilege' not given in most cases of attempt murder.

I'm very glad that he is at home, suspended with pay and without knowing a LOT about the altercation, I believe that it was self defence.

Donovan did not walk away unscathed, it was not unprovoked and IMO, he thought he was going to be killed by Parker. IMO

I sincerely hope that Donovan is vindicated and suspect the other gun charges are in case the attempt murder does not stick in court.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens to Parker in his investigation.

Niagara officer who was shot during on-duty fight with detective now facing charges
"A Niagara regional police officer who was shot several times by a fellow officer during an on-duty confrontation last November is now facing several charges.

On Wednesday Ontario Provincial Police charged Constable Nathan Parker, 52, with assaulting a peace officer, assault with intent to resist arrest, and assault with a weapon.

Parker is expected to appear in a St. Catharines court on June 10, 2019."

Very! Glad to read that Parker has not returned to work. IMO, that should be a permanent situation.

From the article posted, it *seems* that Donovan was not aiming to kill... so why the attempted murder charge?

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the accused discharged his firearm multiple times. According to media reports, Parker was hit in the shoulder and upper leg with a grazing shot taking off the end of his nose.

The charges against Parker shed some light on the puzzling shooting that happened while a group of officers were investigating a collision from a few days before, at a crossroads in Pelham, Ont., a rural community about 20 kilometres west of Niagara Falls.

Donovan, who headed up the collision reconstruction unit, is alleged to have fired his gun multiple times. Parker was seriously injured and airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital, according to the SIU.

OPP investigated at chief's request

Donovan is suspended with pay. Parker is still off work and recovering from his injuries. Parker is a 28-year veteran of the force, according to the NRPS. In that time, he has reportedly faced multiple disciplinary hearings under the Police Services Act. The OPP began its investigation after a request from the NRPS chief.

What was Donovan attempting to arrest Parker for? We know from earlier reports that Parker had left the accident reconstruction scene, while still on duty, and then called to say he was returning to the scene. He was told not to bother returning, but did so anyway.

Did Parker show signs of impairment? Did he start a physical altercation with Donovan? Or both?

Parker used a weapon according to the charges against him - his gun or something else? Something made Donovan fire his weapon.

Other people were present besides Donovan and Parker? If so, trust they could not get close enough to break up the altercation with a gun going off, possibly a second one visible.

Can't wait for the answers to these questions.

It's an interesting strategy imo having the OPP conduct the investigation into Parker's actions and NRP investigate Donovan's actions. I think it's a good idea. Also imo, the charges against Donovan will disappear one way or another, but the charges against Parker will stick like glue. Just not seeing Donovan as the initial aggressor, but he may have responded too aggressively. Either way, the public has to know what the heck went down that day and why.

A hearing to set a date for trial for a Niagara Regional Police officer charged with attempted murder was adjourned Thursday.

Det. Sgt. Shane Donovan was charged in March by the province's Special Investigations Unit in connection to an officer-on-officer shooting in rural Pelham last Nov. 29.

Lawyers for Donovan and the Crown will head back to court at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines July 5.

Niagara Regional Police Const. Nathan Parker was shot multiple times and was transported to an out-of-town hospital by air ambulance with critical injuries.

After the shooting, the SIU invoked its mandate to investigate any incident of serious injury or death involving the police in Ontario.

In a separate but parallel investigation, Ontario Provincial Police charged Parker, 52, in May with assaulting a police officer, assault with intent to resist arrest and assault with a weapon in connection with the same incident. Parker is scheduled for a first court appearance on Monday at the St. Catharines courthouse.

Neither man is in custody.

Parker was shot at least five times, according to police sources. He was injured in the shoulder and upper leg and one bullet took off the end of his nose. His bulletproof vest stopped or deflected other bullets.

Police were in Pelham investigating an impaired driving collision that had occurred on Nov. 12 near Effingham Street and Roland Road. Police had returned to the scene for further investigation on Nov. 29 when an argument started between officers.

Donovan was heading up the NRP's collision reconstruction unit at the time of the incident.
