A hearing to set a date for trial for a Niagara Regional Police officer charged with attempted murder was adjourned Thursday.
Det. Sgt. Shane Donovan was charged in March by the province's Special Investigations Unit in connection to an officer-on-officer shooting in rural Pelham last Nov. 29.
Lawyers for Donovan and the Crown will head back to court at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines July 5.
Niagara Regional Police Const. Nathan Parker was shot multiple times and was transported to an out-of-town hospital by air ambulance with critical injuries.
After the shooting, the SIU invoked its mandate to investigate any incident of serious injury or death involving the police in Ontario.
In a separate but parallel investigation, Ontario Provincial Police charged Parker, 52, in May with assaulting a police officer, assault with intent to resist arrest and assault with a weapon in connection with the same incident. Parker is scheduled for a first court appearance on Monday at the St. Catharines courthouse.
Neither man is in custody.
Parker was shot at least five times, according to police sources. He was injured in the shoulder and upper leg and one bullet took off the end of his nose. His bulletproof vest stopped or deflected other bullets.
Police were in Pelham investigating an impaired driving collision that had occurred on Nov. 12 near Effingham Street and Roland Road. Police had returned to the scene for further investigation on Nov. 29 when an argument started between officers.
Donovan was heading up the NRP's collision reconstruction unit at the time of the incident.
