Police are hunting for a man who sexually assaulted a woman on the same night and on the same tram line as the fatal attack on 21-year-old university student Aiia Maasarwe.

Investigators have been told the 20-year-old victim got off a route 86 tram on Plenty Road in Preston about 10.44pm on January 15.

Police say an unknown male also got off the tram and approached the woman on Bell Street, where he sexually assaulted her before leaving on foot.

The attack took place about two hours before Ms Maasawre was followed off the 86 route tram on the corner of Main Drive and Plenty Road in Bundoora, five kilometres further up the tram line from Preston.

She was followed as she got off the tram and stalked for 100 metres before she was fatally wounded some time after midnight.

CCTV images of the man wanted in relation to the Preston sexual assault have been released in an effort to identify him.

He is described as having an olive complexion, thin build, aged in his 20s, short black hair, 165cm tall and is pictured wearing black Adidas-branded shirt and pants.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppers.com.au

The cause of the woman's death is yet to be determined and she has not been formally identified.

Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius lamented the violence being perpetrated by men against women

"This is about men's behaviour. This is not about women's behaviour,"
he told reporters.
"For me as a man, it gives me pause for reflection."
Police declined to say how old the victim was or how she died

Genuinely interested in your thoughts, why do you think they got the wrong person?

A combination of completely unscientific "gut feeling" (I know, that and $4 will get me a latte) and hearing details of the violence shown towards Aiia & this not fitting with profile of the person arrested. It felt like either more people were involved or incorrect suspect (earlier in thread).

It would be horrific if they got the wrong guy.
Polaris was certainly gone over with a fine tooth comb, no stone unturned even.
I think there is a pretty strong case the police have against the accused.

It is interesting you have a gut feeling though (not saying that in a sarcastic way! It’s hard in text to sound sincere)

Does anyone know what today will involve?

Today will probably be a matter of a 'mention'. The prisoner is arrayed before the court, either in person, or thru video from the remand centre ( due to security concerns, which in this instance , may well be a correct call ).

If he has come to some coherence with his court appointed solicitor, he may table a plea, guilty or not guilty, if he does, it most likely will be not guilty since it is a crime that carries a large mandatory sentence. This usually changes the closer to trial it gets.

It may be a matter of his solicitor being unable to extract any coherent instructions from his client, which is another way of putting it that the solicitor cannot instruct his client sufficiently to receive any satisfactory input into his own defence.

In other words, a brain addled drug addict making a long come-down, consequently, perhaps even unable to comprehend his own position, re the courts, the law and the community.

This being the case, say, then it would be a matter of deciding if in fact there is any purpose in a trial. He could be, and some have been, sent directly to a psychiatric ward secure, for years until deemed 'able to instruct their solicitor'.. which is often never.

The nature of the crime, ( I refer to the burning of various parts of her body) gives out some hint as to the psychiatric make-up of the accused, which doesn't bode well for a rational trial, IMO.

Or, it could be a matter of finalizing the trial date commencement, on a plea of not guilty, wherein the entire panoply of the Supreme Court gets underway to prosecute and try the case. A large undertaking, requiring time to organize.

OR... his solicitor could make a very late application for bail, of which the prisoner has no hope of getting, IMO. None. But it is worth a try.

OR/AND, the prisoners financial matters will be discussed and his capability of paying for his own defence ( Buckleys and Nunn ) or /and his requirement for a portion of the State's allocation for public money to be granted to ensure he has the very best barrister and all the barrister's minions at his beck and call for some months to come.

Lots of variables for today.

Wannabe rap artist pleads guilty to the brutal rape and murder of Israeli student Aiia Maasarwe.

Man pleads guilty to rape and murder of international student Aiia Maasarwe | Daily Mail Online

'Codey Hermann appeared via videolink in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday over the January 16 attack, and when asked how he would plead to the charges of rape, and murder, answered: 'I plead guilty.'

The matter will be listed for directions in the Supreme Court next Wednesday. (12th June 2019)

A plea of guilty. Which means, he goes straight to sentencing.

ALPO, ( Aboriginal Liason Police Officers) would have been with him every step of the way, and , according to their mission statement, they have no truck with the idea of pleading not guilty when you are guilty, it being a discord against the heritage, so that may have been a factor in his plea.

It would surprise me now if much more detail was revealed, in so far as I take the position that the killer was on some mind altering drug and not much of that event would be available to his own memory. And what is available would be something he would never want to admit to or talk about or reveal to anyone, ever.

And obviously, he has survived being in remand, there was much babble about his'vulnerability', but he is still able to speak. … they must be giving him a bit of a break in remand, not a place where breaks are usually found.

Interestingly, he shares the remand centre with a Cardinal, a Prince of the Church of Rome, I wonder if they ever meet over the lunchtime corn beef sandwiches.

Here are a few sentences to keep in mind while awaiting Herman's sentencing declaration. Keep in mind his age, also, 21. This means the Judge has to consider a very long term before parole can be applied for. If at all. There is that option.

'If a non-parole period is fixed, it must be at least 10 years unless exceptional circumstances exist, or 20 years if the prisoner is convicted of the murder of a police officer or other public official.

The longest overall non-parole period is 60 years, being served by Dieter Pfennig (South Australia), who kidnapped and murdered 10-year-old Louise Bell in January 1983, kidnapped and murdered 10-year-old Michael Black in January 1989, and kidnapped and sexually abused a third child in December 1989. [1] As Pfenning would have to live to 103 years of age to serve that term, this means he will, effectively, be incarcerated for the rest of his life.

The longest non-parole period imposed is 46 years, being served by James Gargasoulas (Victoria), who deliberately drove a car into crowds in Bourke Street in January 2017, killing six pedestrians and injuring 27. [2]

The longest overall non-parole period for a single murder is 45 years and six months, being served by Michael Barry Fyfe (South Australia), who stabbed fellow inmate Trevor Tilley in the kitchen of Yatala Prison in January 1995 while serving a 17 and a half year sentence for other crimes including attempted murder, attacking fellow inmates and prison staff, escaping lawful custody, dangerous driving causing death and assaulting police.

The longest non-parole period imposed for a single murder is 35 years, being served by Melbourne CBD gunman Christopher Wayne Hudson (Victoria).[3]

The longest non-parole period imposed on a woman is 32 years, being served by South Australian Angelika Gavare, who murdered and dismembered pensioner Vonne McGlynn in November 2008 for financial gain,[4] and Victorian Cai Xia Liao, who repeatedly stabbed Mai Mach and her four-year-old grandson Alistair Kwong with gardening shears in a vicious attack.[5]
