RIVERSIDE -- The identity of human remains found along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River near Riverside in Northumberland County eight months ago still is unknown.

It has been determined the bones were that of an African-American male who had died between three months to year before they were found, state police said Monday.

A team from the forensic anthropology department at Mercyhurst University in Erie has been helping state police with the identification process.

A property owner in April discovered the remains that Coroner James F. Kelley said at the time also included clothing.

Initially it was thought the remains were that of a man missing from Bloomsburg since Jan. 14, but authorities said that turned out not to be the case.

The investigation remains active, troopers at the Stonington barracks said.

from 2016 article:
Some of the remains were found submerged in the North Branch of the Susquehanna River and some were located where Kelley believes the water had receded.
Kelley asked Steven Whitenight Sr., father of Steven Whitenight Jr., 30, for medical and dental records. The younger Whitenight’s vehicle was last seen along the Susquehanna River in Bloomsburg in January 2016.
Kelley said he hasn’t ruled out any cause of death, including foul play.
Kelley could not estimate how long the partially-clothed body had been at the site, nor would he comment on its position.
Steven Whitenight Sr., of Millville, learned from a friend that human bones had been found in Rush Township and that he went to the scene because his son has been missing from Bloomsburg since Jan. 14.

He said son’s his car — containing keys and a phone — was found near the Bloomsburg Airport and the Susquehanna River.

Steven Whitenight Jr. has been ruled out.

Other 2016 article:
The location is upstream from where Michael Jeffreys, 19 of Riverside, went missing in November 2005 following a traffic accident on the Danville-Riverside bridge, Kelley said.

Following the crash, in which no one was injured, Jeffreys began walking toward the Riverside side of the bridge and police said he either fell or jumped into the icy river. He has not been seen since.

Snipped from article published 4/13/2020:

Coroner James F. Kelley and state police Monday confirmed a person thought to be a relative of the deceased has provided a DNA sample.

It was sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification that manages the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (INamUS) database to determine if there is a DNA match.

------------------------------
The headless remains found April 12, 2016, near Riverside were determined to be an African-American male who had died approximately three months earlier.

Authorities hope DNA will lead to identification of body found in Northumberland County in 2016
