People who have been following this case reasonably closely would know that the LA Times has been working on a story on JJD, basically since immediately after the arrest.

Well, it has finally arrived - and it also features a new multi-part LA Times podcast 'from the makers of Dirty John'

The Golden State Killer suspect became part of their family ⁠— and slowly revealed his violent side

Part 1 of the LA Times article is called 'He has a gun' and features interviews with people who knew JJD well - including his former fiance Bonnie...

Some new information and new photographs are included. :)

The new LA Times podcast about JJD is called 'The Man In The Window' and is available at the LA Times site or wherever you usually get your podcasts :)

Gaw, that was good!!! At the bottom, you can click to read the other parts. This is just part one. That's as far ad I got so far, but Bonnie is so lucky shes ok! I'm sure her dad understood he was acting in heartbreak, but in hindsight, I would love to hear what happened! I'm glad Bonnie was safe through all the years!

"The Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist investigation has been selected as the top DNA case in the world, honoring Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s office and a number of local police agencies that helped lead to the arrest of suspect Joseph James DeAngelo.

The “DNA Hit of the Year” award, announced Tuesday in Kobe, Japan, selected the California case from among 70 cases submitted by 20 different nations.

The award is presented annually by Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Affairs, which consults worldwide on DNA database policy...."

Just a side note from the excellent LA Times articles posted by GreyClay ....... DeAngelo went from a bit overweight and pudgy to lean and skinny during his police career .... (includes pictures)

A bit more trivia from one of the articles (By a backyard neighbor of DeAngelo back when the neighbor was just a boy) ...... here is what he said he saw ......

"Gorman’s most frightening moments came the summer nights he and his siblings slept beneath the California stars on the backyard trampoline. More than once they were startled awake by DeAngelo on the small patch of grass outside his sliding glass doors.

“He would be circling. Maybe having a cigarette. Maybe a beer,” Gorman said. “He would be circling in a slow stroll, maybe some pointing, maybe some fist shaking.”

DeAngelo was alone, shouting fiercely. Obscenities. Expletives against women. Gorman heard the word “kill.”

After the storm of fury, DeAngelo would go inside, only to return minutes later to repeat the mad dialogue, sometimes hours past midnight.

The frightened kids created a joke.

The ex-cop turned mechanic is said to have unleashed an extended spasm of violence in the 1970s and ’80s: Nearly 60 home invasions; 50 rapes; 13 murders. At least 106 victims.

When and if there is a trial _ the multi-county case is years from going to a jury, and DeAngelo is noticeably deteriorating in jail _ prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty. He has not entered a plea.

Prosecutors say he ranged across the state, from Sacramento to Orange County. At every stop in his alleged evolution from burglar and prowler to dog killer, rapist and serial murderer, they say, he escaped detection to start anew under another sobriquet: the Cordova Cat Burglar, the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Creek Killer, the Diamond Knot Killer, the Original Night Stalker...."

The former fiancee of the man accused of being the Golden State Killer has spoken out about their disturbing sex life.

Bonnie Ueltzen told theLos Angeles Times about the bizarre love life she shared with Joseph James DeAngelo in the early 70s.

Then named Bonnie Jean Colwell, she detailed how her fiance had an “insatiable” sexual appetite, despite being a virgin when they met and having “little point of reference”....

Currently, DeAngelo sits on suicide watch in the psychiatric ward of Sacramento county jail, reportedly talking constantly to himself, investigators are delving further into his background for clues.

Prosecutors haven’t yet decided whether they will pursue the death penalty against DeAngelo.

He’s next due to appear in court on August 22, according to documents shared on goldenstatekillertrial.com."

Here is the part of the article that mentions the Golden State Killer:

Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said the moratorium won’t stop her from filing capital charges against people suspected of egregious crimes. Schubert’s office is pursuing the death penalty against Joseph James DeAngelo, accused of being the Golden State Killer.

“The voters of California have passed a law saying they want the death penalty. That’s the law,” she told The Sacramento Bee just after Newsom announced his action. “He cannot preclude a prosecutor or DA’s office from seeking it. There’s nothing stopping us from seeking capital punishment in a case where we feel it’s appropriate.”
