Rat lungworm disease is not associated with an insect. It is a parasitic worm. It is spread from snails and slugs to rats. We only get it if we ingest raw snails or slugs that carry the parasite. It's not a new disease.

It's true no place is safe. We live in an environment full of living things, many of which are not good for our health. Many are. Bacteria in our intestines are important in processing the vitamin K complex which is a essential in regulating clotting. And yet a different bacterial infestation in the stomach is associated with ulcers and lymphomas.

We are just getting better at looking for pathogens, describing them, and communicating world-wide about their potential for harm and possible cures.

We should be very thankful for the work that all these surveillance and healthcare organizations do.

Actually, rat lungworm disease can be gotten many ways including from water and eating lettuce.

There is always a new insect or super bug out there but with some basic knowledge and safety measures a lot of those illnesses can be prevented. I'm not saying there isn't a concern, but we practice a lot of the basic safety measures daily by cooking our food thoroughly, washing our hands. vaccinations, access to healthcare and proper precautions if one is immunocompromised, repellent sprays, and the ability to educate ourselves at our fingertips.

Regarding rat lung disease, humans can become infected if they eat (intentionally or otherwise) a raw or under cooked infected intermediate host, thereby ingesting the parasite like many other diseases we know about.

The Powatassin virus has killed 10 people in the US in the last 10 years. Like any tick borne disease, prevention is key.

MOO

I have had Lyme disease twice. One time the tick was embedded above my eyelid. Who would have guessed. There is no prevention, They can be in your house brought in on someone’s clothing even if you have never left your house.

With changes in climate, we are getting creatures that never lived somewhere before.

We don’t know if there may be a new thing out there like with Powatassin or bird flu or who knows what.

I had zika and chikagunya . Once it goes through a population it is pretty much gone. They show up all of a sudden.

It seems like different situations for some of the people . It may be different things lumped into one coincidence

Some info from the shipping deceased internationally site, above, submitted by poster "human":

How much does it cost to ship a dead body to another country?
The cost for International Funeral Shipping is generally more expensive. As I have mentioned, it is a more complex process, which requires more time from the funeral director. Also, there can be additional fees for the Embassy paperwork, and the shipment tray requirements for the destination country. International ship-out fees tend to start at around $3,000 - $4,000, but can sometimes cost even more than this. On top of the ship-out service charge, you then have the airline cost for an international mortuary cargo fee. These obviously range by destination country, but a ball-park figure would be anywhere between $2,000 - $6,000.
This means an international repatriation of remains can cost thousands of dollars in total."

"A certified English translation of the death certificate, written authorization from local authorities to remove the body, and a certificate of the embalming must accompany the body."

"What is an air-tray?
This is a special kind of container that the airlines and the TSA require a body to be placed inside for shipment on an airplane. It is specially designed to be robust and protect the deceased during freight, but also for health and safety purposes, it is air-tight to prevent any leakages."

"Repatriation of Remains Insurance – Travel Protection Plan for those who travel frequently
It is possible to take out a repatriation policy if you (or a family member) travel frequently. It can become especially important if you are over 50 and travel regularly out of state or overseas. A Travel Protection Plan can be purchased for around $495 as a one-time payment. This is an assurance policy that covers repatriation of a body back home, or a cremation at the place of death. It is can give peace of mind to those who travel or have retired and spend time in warmer climates during the winter months."

Dominican Republic death: American tourist Leyla Cox died last week in her hotel room - CNN

At this point, I don't know why any US citizen, or from any country for that matter, would choose to vacation in the Dominican Republic until more is know about these deaths.

Per the article you linked, 14 million Americans have visited the DR since 2012. 128 have died. Do the math.

Now, I might not be willing to take my chances by staying at these two brands (Bahia Principe and Hard Rock) right now, but statistically, this may be a case of the media whipping people into a frenzy. IMO.

I agree the math over the years is in one's favor, however if dodgy booze is in play, are you really going to chance it?

I would absolutely "chance it," but I would definitely not drink the booze. And I would be fairly choosy about what I ate. While I generally prefer fresh foods, I would definitely eat processed and fully cooked food. Or a lot of bananas. :D

I'm not saying these recent deaths should not be investigated - I believe they should! And I'm very glad US officials are looking into them. But, IMO, these recent tragic deaths have happened in two resorts and I don't find that alarming (unless I had reservations at those resorts, of course!).

Well you also have to take into account the number of people that have fallen ill there, and not died. That is a number we really have no idea what it is. The concern I think is the number of deaths/illnesses in a relatively short period of time in a couple of specific places. If this is bad booze or illegal pesticides, the use may be on the increase and needs to be addressed. And I am afraid that without media attention and consumer pressure, there won't be any real investigation and corrections. If it is brought out in the light and not covered up, it provides disincentive to others doing it in the future.

This is a very small sample size and the numbers would not be statistically valid other than perhaps reflecting the demographics of their clientele.

It's like playing Russian roulette.

Statistics don't mean one thing to the one's who die or become seriously ill.

Imo
Right. And if you get ill in that particular place, you can't trust the health-care system. That fact needs to be factored into the stats.

And if you're a victim of crime, you can't trust LE either, from what we're hearing.
