Temple burglary suspect may be connected to 2009 missing woman case

A man accused of burglarizing the home of an ex-girlfriend in Temple is also a possible person of interest in a missing woman case in Bloomington, Minnesota according to investigators.

Police there say Cedric Marks is the ex-boyfriend of April Pease, who disappeared in March 2009. Investigators tell FOX44 News that the case never closed, but interest has resurfaced in Marks because of his recent arrest. He and Pease had a child together and were involved in a custody case.

Bloomington Police department Public Information Officer Mike Hartley said they were looking at Cedric Marks as a possible person of interest in the missing persons case of April Pease. However, Hartley said he was not considered a suspect in the Pease case.
---
Pease and Marks were in a bitter custody battle over their son in Washington state. According to court documents, Pease was afraid of Marks and went to stay at a protected location for domestic abuse victims.

Court documents filed in Kitsap County, WA depicted Pease as a woman with severe drug addiction problems that affected the parenting and safety of her children.

The documents described Marks as someone with aggressive behavior but who was in "complete denial that he has issues around domestic violence."

The court ultimately granted Pease temporary custody believing that where Pease lived was the most predictable.

The court ordered Marks to participate in a domestic violence assessment by a certified provider along with a psychosexual evaluation by a certified provider.

Pease was last seen on March 17, 2009 in Bloomington, Minnesota. On March 20, the Kitsap County court ordered temporary placement of the child with Marks.

The court ruled Marks could take custody of the child as soon as he could make arrangements to come to Minnesota and pick the child up.

So it seems she had custody of the child but lost it when she did not appear to latest court hearing (due to her disappearance).

April Pease disappeared in 2009 during a custody battle with Cedric Marks over their child. Marks has not been named a suspect in her disappearance, but her case has gotten more attention since he was arrested and then escaped custody today in Conroe, Texas.

Marks’ former girlfriend, April Pease, has been missing since 2009 in Minnesota. They were in a custody battle over their son when she disappeared, The Daily Mail reported. He was questioned but not arrested. Bloomington Police Public Information Officer Mike Hartlsey said in January that they were looking at Marks as a possible person of interest in Pease’s case, KCENTV reported, but he’s not considered a suspect.

Dottie Pease, April’s mother, said she struggled with substance abuse and had moved to Minnesota to seek treatment and get away from Marks, KXAN reported.

KCENTV reported that Pease had been afraid of Marks and moved to a place for domestic abuse victims to get away. Court documents noted that Pease had a drug addiction that affected her children’s safety. The court granted Pease custody and ordered Marks to have a domestic violence assessment. But when Pease disappeared, Marks was granted temporary custody in 2009.

According to the Charley Project page about her, Pease was last seen in March 2009 in Bloomington, Minnesota. She was born on February 15, 1979, and was 30 when she disappeared. She had just moved to Minnesota for treatment for her addiction. Her mother said that her daughter had been clean for several months and was doing well when she disappeared.

On November 1, 2008, Marks wrote a letter on WordPress about April Pease. The subject line reads, “A letter to the kidnappers of my son….” and is the only post on that blog.

[...]

According to court documents, Pease was granted custody on March 2, 2009. Then a superseding order allowing placement with Marks was granted on March 20 when she disappeared. An “Order Allowing Continued Placement” with Marks was then entered on March 30, 2009, when Pease was still not heard from. The original order, on March 2, had ruled that Marks shouldn’t have contact with Pease or the child by phone or telephone, but he could write letters. The court also said that Pease needed to help the child draw pictures to send to Marks. Pease was ordered to have a supervised urinalysis on March 4, 2009, with results provided to the court.

Mother of missing woman believes ex-MMA fighter is involved in her disappearance

The mother of a missing woman, who disappeared from a women's shelter in Bloomington nearly 10 years ago, is pleading for information to bring her home.

“I know that one of the girls that he’s been with then or now, they know. They know something and I’m just hoping that they will tell what they know,” said Dottie Pease, mother of April Pease.

[...]

Dottie started suspecting Cedric was involved when he was recently connected to the murders of Jenna Scott and Michael Swearingin in Texas. They had been missing for more than a week when their bodies were found buried in a shallow grave in Oklahoma last month.

Dottie now believes Cedric has something to do with her daughter’s death.

”I’m hoping that they find my daughter's remains and charge that animal and I am able to bring my daughter home,” Dottie Pease said.

Friday is April Pease’s 40th birthday.

Cedric Marks’ bond is set at $1.75 million.

I just finished reading the Jenna Scott and Michael Swearingin thread where I also learned about April Pease.

Such a tragedy all the way around.

I found this article about April, with more details than I’ve seen anywhere else. It’s from 2011. Starts on page 1A. Just search for Pease and it will take you right to it. It’s from Bloomington newspaper.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — After more than a decade of work there are new developments in a missing person’s case following a murder investigation that spanned four states. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has charged two people with second-degree murder in connection to the 2009 abduction of April Pease.

Fourty-five year-old Cedric Joseph Marks of Texas and 34-year-old Kellee Kristine Sorensen of Washington are currently in police custody in their home states.

[SBM]

Marks had previously fathered a child with Pease while they were living in Washington State. Then, in 2009 Pease and her then 4-year-old child relocated to a refuge for domestic assault victim’s in Bloomington following several alleged domestic assaults by Marks.

Court documents say that Pease was transferred to the Bloomington shelter after being located by Marks at another shelter in Washington. Some time after the transfer, police investigators say Marks and Sorenson traveled from Washington to Minnesota to find Pease in March 2009. Pease was allegedly taken against her will and driven southbound on I-35, before being killed at an unknown location by Marks as Sorenson sat in the vehicle, according to statements obtained by detectives.

Pease’s body has never been found. Monday marks the anniversary of her disappearance.“ (BBM)

On the 11th anniversary of April Pease's disappearance, two people have been charged in connection to her murder after they allegedly abducted her in 2009 from a women's shelter in Bloomington, Minnesota.
---
Cedric Joseph Marks, 45, of Belton, Texas and Kellee Kristine Sorensen, 34, of Lynden, Washington, have both been charged with second-degree murder.

Marks became a person of interest in Pease's case in 2019 after he was arrested in an unrelated murder case in Texas. Marks had shared a child with Pease when they lived together in Washington. According to the criminal complaint, Pease had suffered abuse at the hands of Marks. In 2009, Pease left with her four-year-old son and moved to a women's shelter in Bloomington.
---
According to the charges, on March 16, 2019, Sorensen told police she helped Marks find Pease at the women's shelter in Bloomington and helped with the abduction. She explained they parked across the street of the facility and waited for Pease. When they saw Pease get out of her vehicle with her son, Marks punched Pease and put her in their vehicle. In the meantime, Sorenson dropped the boy off at the women's shelter.

Sorensen and Marks drove off to another area with Pease. At some point, Marks took Pease out of the vehicle, put her in a chokehold and later dragged her out of Sorenson's sight. Marks later returned, crying, saying he killed Pease and removed her teeth and hands to prevent a possible identification. Pease's body has never been recovered.

Marks is currently in custody in Texas, while Sorensen is in custody in Washington.

Pease was last seen in Bloomington, Minnesota on March 17, 2009. She has never been heard from again. She had recently moved to Minnesota to get treatment for her addiction and to get away from her former boyfriend, Cedric Marks. Her mother said she had gotten clean and seemed to be doing well. She was not reported missing for several months.

Peace was in a bitter custody dispute Marks at the time of her disappearance. When she failed to show up for court about the custody issue on March 20, three days after her disappearance, Marks speculated she had relapsed. He was awarded custody of their son and wasn't considered a suspect in Pease's disappearance at the time.

In January 2019, another of Marks's former girlfriends, Jenna Scott, disappeared with her friend Michael Swearingin from Temple, Texas. Scott had gotten a protective order against Marks, saying he had threatened her and her family and had choked her and thrown her out of his car. The order was not made permanent, however.

In August 2018, Marks had been charged with burglary after he allegedly broke into Scott's house. Marks was arrested in Michigan on the outstanding burglary charge. A photo of him is posted with this case summary. His current girlfriend, Maya Maxwell, was arrested on the same charge, and his wife, Ginell McDonough, was arrested for harboring a fugitive; she allegedly helped Marks hide from the police.

Two weeks after they vanished, Scott and Swearingin's bodies were found buried in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. Marks was charged with their murders and extradited to Texas. Pease's mother believes Marks was responsible for her daughter's disappearance as well.

Authorities said they would be reinvestigating Pease's disappearance in light of the later homicides. Her case remains unsolved.

Thank you for sharing. Marks is one of the worst of the worst, IMO. From the article:
“According to the charges, on March 16, 2019, [Kellee Kristine] Sorensen told police she helped [Cedric Joseph] Marks find Pease at the women's shelter in Bloomington and helped with the abduction.

In February of 2020, authorities interviewed Marks' wife Ginell McDonough, who said Marks admitted to her that he killed Pease in order to get custody of his son. She also remembered that Marks gave her a CD, which he made for his son to watch when he turned 18 years old. The CD contained two videos in which he addresses his children and says he is ‘about to go and do something that could either get him locked away for the rest of his life or get him killed,’ according to the charges.

He then addresses his son with Pease directly, saying he's going on a road trip to save his life because he claims Pease kidnapped the boy, the charges state. Marks says he's about to go and do something ‘horrible,’ but he has to do it because the courts are siding with Pease.

[SBM]” (BBM)
Sickening, IMO.

I find it interesting that his wife gave the authorities additional information only last month:
“[SBM]

Ginell McDonough, 38, of Muskegon is married to Cedric Joseph Marks, who is s accused of killing a Texas couple in January 2019. She pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to harboring a fugitive whom she knew was wanted for a felony.

[SBM]

She is not expected to serve any jail time when she is sentenced Nov. 13. Muskegon County Circuit Judge Annette Smedley has agreed to a sentence of time served and probation, court records show.

The defense requested the late sentencing date. Defense Attorney Michael Oakes did not return a phone call seeking comment.“
Wife admits to hiding MMA fighter accused of double murder
https://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon...-accused-of-double-murder.html?outputType=amp
Also:
“[McDonough's attorney Michael] Oaks said the recommended sentence for harboring a felon in Michigan is 0-9 months. He said he will ask for probation.“
Wife of Temple double murder suspect Cedric Marks admits to helping him hide from police

And a nine-and-a-half month delay between plea and sentencing sounds somewhat unusual, IMO. I wonder if she is required to cooperate with investigators in April’s disappearance and the murders of Jenna Scott and Michael Swearingin in Texas, and if so, would that explain her attorney’s request for the delay in sentencing? I understand that according to Sorensen, she and Marks were the only ones there when April was murdered and her body discarded, but has Marks shared any information with McDonough anything at all that would help locate April’s remains? It doesn’t sound as though Sorensen has been very helpful in this regard if she has been talking to LE for a whole year and April is yet to be found. Or perhaps she is using that as leverage in negotiating a plea deal ....
