Mysterious mobile traces after Dutchman went missing still confuse the police

Eight months after Arjen Kamphuis disappeared, the police still do not know why his mobile phone hit three base stations in Rogaland - ten days after he was last seen.

The findings the police have made so far in connection with the search for the missing Arjen Kamphuis may indicate that he has been exposed to an accident - but then there was this mobile trail in Rogaland.

- Based on the findings at Rognan, it could have been obvious to conclude that Kamphuis has been the victim of an accident. However, there is this so-called Rogaland trail, a trail that allows us not to draw that conclusion, says police inspector Bjarte Walla in Nordland police district to NRK

For eight months, the police have actively investigated what has happened to the missing Dutchman Arjen Kamphuis, of whom there are no safe observations since August last year.

The 46-year-old is a Dutch security expert. He has provided IT advice to the government and has helped journalists, lawyers and human rights activists to protect themselves against digital espionage.

August 20 he checked out of the Scandic Hotel in Sjøgata in Bodø. Later that day he was observed in the center of Rognan in Saltdal. Since then no one has seen him.

- The observation on Rognan is not confirmed, but we consider it so safe that the last known place where he was seen is on Rognan on August 20th.

- What makes this observation so secure?

- It is safe because there have been discoveries of belongings belonging to Kamphuis near Rognan. A kayak has also been discovered, and this is a kayak of the same brand that he bought in the Netherlands before traveling to Norway.

The kayak was found in Kvænflåget in Fauske municipality by a recreational fisherman. However, the police cannot determine whether the kayak has actually been in use or not.

- Here we have conflicting information. Some information indicates that it has been used, others say it has not been, says Walla.

But then it was this mobile trace in Rogaland. On August 30, that is, ten days after Kamphuis checked out of the hotel in Bodø and later was observed at Rognan, the mobile phone of Kamphuis connected to three base stations in Rogaland.

- Based on the times when the mobile phone has connected to the base stations, we conclude that the mobile phone may have been in a vehicle that moved on the way north along the E18 towards Stavanger at a speed approximately equivalent to the speed limit, Walla says.

But what kind of vehicle, who owned it, and whether Kamphuis was also on board the vehicle has not yet been clarified.

"We have collected information on tolls, we have questioned several witnesses and we have ongoing active investigations related to this track," says police inspector Walla, who also says that a legal request has been sent to foreign police that the police in Norway are still awaiting response to.

Walla says the police will continue the investigation as long as there are active investigative steps to take.

"But we consider ourselves to be in a final phase of the investigation, in the sense that the active investigative steps we can reasonably and appropriately undertake begin to be exhausted.

The police still have three main hypotheses in connection with the disappearance:

1. Kamphuis has been the victim of an accident

2. Kamphuis has voluntarily chosen to stay hidden

3. Kamphuis has been the subject of some criminal action

- We have ourselves some thoughts how these three hypotheses stand in relation to each other, but it is something we are not ready to speak about this at the stage, Walla says.

TY for the post. I do however find it very disappointing that there aren't any real updates,no mention on DNA on the kayak, just some random updates on collecting information on toll checks?
Shouldn't Norway have some high tech on spying, digital security?
This sucks!!!
And BTW, I don't believe the crap about a self disappearance!!

Åsted Norge calls for new tips in the Arjen case

Much has been written and the theories have been many after Arjen Kamphuis disappeared in August 2018. The last sure observation of the Dutchman was August 20 when he checked out of his hotel in Bodø in the afternoon.

We are now approaching nine months since the disappearance.
In September, the TV program Åsted Norge on TV 2 recorded the mysterious disappearance, and after the broadcast, the police received a number of interesting tips.

Monday May 13, Åsted Norge writes this on their Facebook page:

It is almost nine months since Arjen Kamphuis disappeared while on holiday in Northern Norway. The last sure observation of the Dutch security expert was when he checked out of Scandic Bodø on August 20th. Ten days later, three base stations in Rogaland picked up signals from two telephone numbers associated with Kamphuis. It is this trail that makes the police uncertain that he has ended up in an accident.

Thank you for the updates and picking up this thread again, ZaZara!

Åsted Norge is (imo) a very reliable broadcast and does thorough
research.
Death in the Ice Valley /Kambo men is among their list.

I do hope Arjen will be found, and to be honest.. I don't think that a self disappearance is a reliable senerio either.
Nobody knew he was going to Bodø, bought a kayak, "lucky find" on the bump bag with ID, switching hotels, not being seen in hotels, only check ins/out..
Imo, if you want to look like an accident and disappear, you want your steps to be traced.
Looks to me, like he did the opposite..

I do hope it will leads to more insights..

Missing one year tomorrow.

I am looking for updates, but there seems to be no news at all. Maybe later in the day or tomorrow. (Fingers crossed!)

How's the investigation progressing, police inspector Bjarte Walla?

One year since the mysterious disappearance of cyberexpert Arje Kamphuis

arjen-kamphuis.jpg

(...) And then he suddenly disappeared. The 46-year-old Kamphuis was last seen on 20 August when he checked out of his hotel in Bodø in northern Norway. Since then, the cyber expert has been missing without a trace.

His disappearance is surrounded by mysteries. On 30 August - ten days after his disappearance - his mobile phone unexpectedly made contact for twenty minutes with transmitter masts in southern Norway, near the town of Vikesa. After this, the SIM cards were removed and a German SIM card was inserted into his device.

Three weeks after his disappearance, his foldable kayak, his ID and other belongings were found in a fjord near Mount Kvænflåget north of Rognan. There were reports that he had been seen in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Norway. But Kamphuis remained undetected.

Four months after his disappearance, many hoped that Kamphuis was still alive and that he had left of his own free will into anonymity. He had done so before. A new search was started.

"We take into account that Arjen might have fallen into a state of mental emergency", Van der Leest told the AD last December. "His stressful life, in combination with high intelligence and spending weeks alone, could lead to that."

The German SIM card in his cell phone gave them hope. Just before his holiday Kamphuis had made a payment to Deutsche Bahn. Friends wondered if he had prepared a trip to Germany.

In December they distributed 60,000 Find Arjen stickers during a large hacker congress in Leipzig in the hope that he was still 'hanging around' somewhere. But nothing has been heard from Kamphuis.

On social media, all kinds of conspiracy theories were shared about his disappearance. Was he kidnapped by a secret service? Was he in the process of unveiling a major scandal?

In an interview with RTL last year, Van der Leest said she thought it was 'not weird' that these theories were circulating: "Arjen is an outspoken person and is never afraid to provoke people with his work."

The police assume three scenarios: an accident, a crime and the possibility of deliberate hiding. A year after his disappearance, none of the mysteries have been solved. Kamphuis remains missing and friend Ancilla van de Leest can add little.

"In consultation with friends and family we only want to say that we still miss Arjen very much," she says.

How can you vanish off the radar? Arjen Kamphuis has been missing for 1 year and probably chose to do so himself.

He's been missing for a year, but maybe that's the plan. In August last year Arjen Kamphuis left his hotel in Bodo in Norway and managed to disappear without a trace. So far it is still not clear what happened to him.

For some time now, people from his immediate surroundings have been taking serious account of the fact that he himself opted to go into anonymity. That scenario is quite possible, says former detective Sander Schaepman.

Kamphuis is a highly intelligent IT expert, who taught data security and espionage all over the world. He had already disappeared from the radar once before, after some setbacks in his private life. Last year he went to Norway to clear his head after a stressful period, those involved reported earlier to the AD.

It may well be that he disappeared again of his own accord last year. According to Schaepman, this is clear from the traces found during the intensive search for him. According to the former detective, this fits in the picture. "It is possible that he has set out a red herring and is no longer in Norway at all."

Schaepman worked for the police for 25 years and, as head of detective departments, dealt with investigations and observations. He also used this knowledge as head of the investigation team in the Hunted television programme. He thinks that someone with the skills of Arjen Kamphuis can easily disappear, if he wants to.

"Kamphuis had to cover his tracks digitally, but that is exactly what he is capable of," says Schaepman. Yet the possible self-chosen disappearance of Kamphuis is just one of the scenarios. The Norwegian police have never ruled out an accident or crime.

Schaepman acknowledges that anything is possible. "We should not underestimate his skills and determination to do this, but certainly not overestimate these either."

Norwegian Police: Arjen Kamphuis died in a kayak incident, body ended up in the sea

The Norwegian police have closed the investigation into the disappearance of Arjen Kamphuis from Amsterdam who has been missing since last August. The investgators conclude that he probably died in a kayak accident. They think that the Dutchman's body ended up in the sea.

Although a kayak accident was always one of the most probable scenarios that the Norwegian police assumed, a crime or the possibility that Kamphuis was deliberately hiding was also taken into account.

This was due to the fact that the Dutchman's mobile phone made contact with radio masts in southern Norway for another twenty minutes on 30 August. Then the SIM card was removed and a German SIM card was inserted into the device.

The police have now discovered that two Eastern European lorry drivers who fished in the fjords at the time have found the phone. They thought that the items had been thrown away and then took them with them. They later drove to Stavanger, a town in south-western Norway.

The Norwegian police have stated that they have no reason to suspect that the two lorry drivers have anything to do with the disappearance of Kamphuis.

Kamphuis was on holiday in Norway and would return to the Netherlands on 22 August, but no one had heard from him. He was last seen when he checked out of his hotel in Bodø on 20 August.

In mid-September some of Kamphuis' belongings were found near the Kvaenflaget, a small mountain between Fauske and Rognan.

This included a foldable kayak. Kamphuis had bought the kayak to go kayaking in the Norwegian fjords during his holiday.

Politiet konkluderer i Kamphuis-mysteriet

Police have concluded in their investigation that Arjen Kamphuis was reported missing in late August last year, when he did not return to the Netherlands after his holiday in Norway.

Kamphuis had a background as a Wikileaks employee and several major international media mentioned the recovery case.

NRK also traveled to the Netherlands and met Kamphuis's friends, who did not think Kamphuis was dead, but felt he was deliberately hiding.

But the police now believe that Kamphuis is dead.

- Police have found that he was most likely killed in a kayak accident in the Skjerstadfjord at Rognan on the evening of August 20, 2018. The missing person has so far not been found and there is reason to believe he has disappeared into the sea, says police lawyer Bjarte Walla in the Nordland Police District.

The last witness observation of Kamphuis was in the afternoon on the same day as police believe the 47-year-old was involved in the accident.

Then he was seen walking from the train station towards Rognan center. Earlier in the day he had checked out of his hotel in Bodø and traveled by train to Rognan.

The police's conclusion that Kamphuis died in an accident is based on the evidence available in the case, Walla said.

A few days after Kamphuis was reported missing, a damaged kayak and a paddle were found in the water's edge at the Skjerstad Fjord.

Some other personal belongings were also found floating in the sea.

Police would probably have come to the conclusion of a paddle accident earlier, had it not been for a sim card belonging to Arjen Kamphuis at three base stations near Stavanger just before midnight on August 30, 2018.

The investigation of this track has now revealed that the relevant mobile phone, a computer and other objects were found by two Eastern European professional drivers who were fishing from shore during their rest time.

The objects were found in the same area as the kayak was found. The two Eastern Europeans thought the objects had been thrown away, since they looked they had been in the water for a while.

The two men brought the items, including the relevant sim card, and had them in their possession when they later drove to Stavanger.

The investigation has revealed that the two East European professional drivers passed the three relevant base stations on 30 August 2018.

Police find no reason to suspect the two drivers of having had anything to do with Kamphuis's disappearance beyond that.

On September 25, 2018, I wrote the following:

FINALLY something I can understand IMMEDIATELY. This one is EASY.

On August 20, the phone fell into the water. It was rescued, and put into a bag of rice. To dry. Ten days later, someone says: Let's see if that phone is dry at last. And tries to switch it on. And miracle, it works, but the battery is low so they have to load it in the car. There are at least two of them. One is driving. The other is busy with the phone and the simcard.

Riddle solved. All IMHO.

Norway - Norway - Arjen Kamphuis, 47, Dutch citizen, Bodø, 20 Aug 2018

It is kind of strange to discover that this is what did happen.

The lorrydrivers also found his computer....

Computer was found, phone was found, purse with ID was found, kayak and paddle were found, and LK found a pair of folded sport socks, all in the same area.
What I still don't get ... why wouldn't Arjen be where his luggage was? There is probably a logical explanation, but it is strange, at least to me, that the kayak would wash ashore, and a body would not.

Is there any info about which phone(s) he had and how he kept it with him? Waterproof bag? Any photos of Arjen’s belongings that were found?
