Every day 'more difficult,' but Jennifer Hillier-Penney's family still looks for answers

Dec 01, 2018

"A somber anniversary passed Friday night — it's now been two years since Jennifer Hillier-Penney disappeared — but for some, not nearly enough has changed.

"We know no more now then the day she went missing," says Yvonne Hillier-Decker, who is Hillier-Penney's sister and one of the last to have seen the woman in St. Anthony.

Frustrated, sad and angry, Hillier-Decker and others in Hillier-Penney's family organized a walk Saturday morning that took them to the steps of the RCMP detachment in St. Anthony and the driveway of the home where she disappeared.

"Today is a very emotional day," said Joann Peyton, another of Hillier-Penney's sisters. "We would hope that it would not be two years since Jennifer went missing that we wouldn't have the answers."...."

Crown wants to hang on to possible 'real evidence' in Jennifer Hillier-Penney case

Dec 11, 2018

"The investigation into the disappearance of Jennifer Hillier-Penney is headed to court, as the Crown seeks to continue holding onto items it calls "potentially real reliable evidence" in the case.

Family and friends of Hillier-Penney held a walk through St. Anthony, on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, on Dec. 1 to commemorate two years since the mother of two vanished without a trace from the home of her estranged husband, Dean Penney.

No charges have ever been laid, but court applications dated Dec. 5, 2018, show that in the days following her 2016 disappearance, RCMP seized a number of items in its investigation.

Those items came from three places: a cabin used by the former couple, a vehicle, and the family home — which Hillier-Penney had moved out of — in St. Anthony.

On Thursday in Supreme Court in Corner Brook, the Crown will go before a judge and ask to continue to hold on to all of those items, which are identified only by alphanumeric tags...."

Demanding justice for Jennifer Hillier-Penney
March through St. Anthony held to demand answers for missing woman

December 12, 2018

"ST. ANTHONY, N.L.
Family and friends marched through the streets of St. Anthony last week in search of justice for Jennifer Hillier-Penney....

Participants walked from the town hall up to Husky Drive, to the home from where Hillier-Penney disappeared.

From there they marched to the Ultramar, then to the police station, concluding at the town hall.

As they marched, they held signs demanding “Justice for Jennifer” while chanting that “Her life matters” and “We need answers”.

At the town hall, they played a song in memory of Hillier-Penney, requested by her daughter Marina.

Yvonne Hillier-Decker, one of Hillier-Penney’s siblings, participated in the march.

She felt it was a strong turnout to show support and demand justice for her sister.

Decker believes her sister was murdered. And she believes there is more than one person out there who knows what happened...."

Police allowed to keep possible evidence in Jennifer Hillier-Penney case

Dec 13, 2018

"The RCMP can continue holding onto potential evidence in the disappearance of Jennifer Hillier-Penney for another year, after a western Newfoundland judge granted the Crown's request on Thursday.

Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador Justice George Murphy ruled the Crown and RCMP could keep numerous seized items until Dec. 15, 2019, the latest in a series of such extensions that have been granted since the police investigation into what happened to Hillier-Penney began.

Members of Hillier-Penney's family, who made the 470-km trek overnight from St. Anthony for the brief court appearance in Corner Brook, welcomed the outcome.

"It's wonderful news. Hopefully by then, they'll have someone served justice," said sister Yvonne Hillier in the courthouse parking lot, standing by a car plastered in posters reading "Justice for Jennifer."..."

Jennifer Hillier-Penney's daughter devastated by rumours of remains being found
Marina Penney says faith in finding her mother, missing since 2016, is dwindling

Jun 23, 2019

"Marina Penney thought the day had come when she'd finally learn what had happened to her mother, Jennifer Hillier-Penney.

Her family heard a rumour this weekend that a fisherman had hauled up a piece of plastic, like an air mattress, in Hare Bay.

Then she heard there were bones inside, raising the possibility it was the remains of her mother, who has been missing from St. Anthony since Nov. 30, 2016.

"When I heard it was bones and I couldn't get a hold of the police, I was like, 'Oh my god, we're going to find her,'" she told CBC News on Saturday night.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be the first of many egregious rumours spread between Friday evening and Saturday morning...."

"Two weeks before Jennifer Hillier-Penney vanished from her estranged husband's house in a remote Newfoundland town, she removed him as a beneficiary on her life insurance policy.

For her oldest daughter, Marina Penney, that gesture says a lot about what her mother was thinking in the days leading up to her disappearance in St. Anthony.

"She knew that something was going to happen to her," Penney said from her Clarenville home this week. "She was living in fear."

Hillier-Penney disappeared from Dean Penney's home on Nov. 30, 2016. Documents show the change in her life insurance policy — removing Dean Penney and leaving her two daughters as beneficiaries — was signed and dated on Nov. 16, 2016.

"The 16th of November, as I know it, it was the day her life was threatened. She went back to work that day and she had her friend witness those changes to take my dad off that policy," Marina Penney said."

"The brother of Jennifer Hillier-Penney, the St. Anthony woman who disappeared without a trace five years ago, fears the police will soon declare her file a cold case and the family will never find the closure they desperately seek.

"People can't believe this is the fifth year," said Glen Hillier, with tears in his eyes.

"I still can't believe it's true. I would like for her to be able to walk out through the door and say 'Hi, I'm here'. It's a hard feeling, emotions are going wild."

''Hillier-Penney was last seen Nov. 30, 2016, at her estranged husband's home, where she spent the night to look after the younger of the couple's two daughters. The teenager woke the next morning to find her mother gone, but personal items like her coat, keys and passport all left behind.''
