Most of the cameras in the park where missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck was last seen were not recording anything that morning.

“We have some cameras that are active,” said Len Arave, mayor of North Salt Lake, “and we’ve given that to the Salt Lake City Police Department, and we have some cameras that I’d consider dummy cameras.”

They appear to be cameras but aren’t. He said they’re simply there to deter crime and vandalism.

“We have cameras that see parts of the park but not necessarily parts of the park that would’ve been helpful to the Salt Lake City Police Department,” Arave said.

Two comments to a social media post sent anonymously to a private investigator and subsequently forwarded to the creators of a Utah missing persons and cold cases podcast suggested Mackenzie Lueck had been seeking “sugar daddy”-type relationships with older men.

“Try Tinder and be blunt about it,” read one comment, which appeared to have been authored by an account belonging to Lueck.

IMG_9144-e1561551574844.jpg

“Mine says ‘I want a SD/SB relationship with a real connection.’ If don’t know what a SD/SB is, tell them bluntly sugar daddy and sugar baby. But if they don’t know, they aren’t really worth your time. Set (your) age preference from 35+. You’ll have the most luck there. Private message me, if you have more questions! I have experience.”

“I have some experience on seeking arrangements, online only, tinder, and currently have two lol,” read the second comment, which had a time stamp suggesting it was 12 weeks old.

Other screens obtained by private investigator Jason Jensen showed a Seeking Arrangement profile with what appeared to be an image of Lueck.

It noted that the woman featured in the profile was from California, in Utah for school and graduating in kinesiology in Spring 2020, while mentioning that she was seeking a “mutually beneficial” relationship.

Where is Mackenzie Lueck? What we know after 8 days
It has been eight days since University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck disappeared, with no activity on her phone and bank accounts that remain untouched.

[...]

Cameras that might have captured critical clues at the park aren’t cameras at all, according to city manager Ken Leetham.

“This park’s right on a main street, it’s right near the police station, and so it gets a lot of attention. A lot of eyes are on this park,” added Leetham.

But at 3 a.m.? Likely very empty, said Leetham.

Those who live nearby say police have been patrolling their neighborhood visibly over the past few days, including asking those nearby for surveillance footage.

Wow That is just so hard to fathom a park with little children and fake cameras. You can get good security very cheap now and a public park with a little playground for children and all the child abuductions and pedophiles lurking around at parks is beyond disbelief this is negligent IMHO.

Because of this negligence ML driver could have been apprehended by now and maybe saved her life if anything has had happened to her.

Salt Lake City police share last known images of missing U of U student; exploring possible links to social media dating accounts | Gephardt Daily
[...]

Lueck said police also are focused on any dating apps Lueck may be involved with. Social media postings, unconfirmed by police, include the suggestion that Lueck is involved with the Sugardaddies.com website, and may accept dates through that.

Doubt would not answer reporter questions about specific social media accounts or apps that could be connected to Lueck’s disappearance, but did confirm detectives were looking into the social media aspect of her life.

One online post suggested that among Lueck’s alternate Instagram accounts is Novababy96, which shows a woman from the back, wearing underwear or a swimsuit bottom that says “Daddy.”

That account is private, so its ownership cannot be confirmed, but the main page does say the account is followed by a Kenzie Lueck, the name on Lueck’s main Instagram account.

Police will confirm that Lueck’s cell phone is currently powered down and that it was turned off once she met up with an unknown person at Hatch Park in North Salt Lake just before 3 a.m. on June 17.

“Pretty much right after the contact was made at the park—that’s when things went dark,” said Detective Greg Wilking.

[...]

“Knowing what communications came in, either text message or through phone calls in or out,” Leavitt said, adding that the records would also provide the location of Lueck’s phone based off of triangulation with cell phone towers.

Leavitt said police will only get part of the puzzle by accessing the cell phone records.

[...]

The details of such internet-based communications, even though they were completed on a cell phone, can’t be obtained from a cell phone provider. They would need to be obtained for the company that manages the online messaging application.

[...]

If police determine that Lueck was using a messaging application, they could get a separate search warrant asking for the details of her activity on the app. That could possibly uncover the identity of the person waiting for her at Hatch Park.

“Either she or the person that she’s with doesn’t want to be found,” Leavitt said.

The University of Utah student who disappeared after ordering a Lyft and being dropped off at a local park last week was texting someone before she went missing, police in Salt Lake City told Fox News exclusively, saying they have surveillance video and a digital trail to prove it.

Appearing on “Shepard Smith Reporting” on Wednesday, Salt Lake City Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt told Smith investigators have spoken with the last known person to be communicating with 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck before she disappeared and that the person was cooperating with their investigation.

[...]

“We know she was texting someone at the airport,” Doubt told Smith on Wednesday, adding that investigators were looking into it.

[...]

“After discussions with her family and friends we see no indication that she has gone off the grid before,” Doubt told reporters on Tuesday. “This kind of behavior is uncharacteristic for her according to them.”

[...]

When speaking with Smith on Wednesday, Doubt reaffirmed it was out of character for Lueck to cut contact with her family completely.

Questions raised about dating apps as search continues for missing Utah student
As the search for a missing University of Utah student continues, questions are being raised about whether her social media and dating accounts might lead to a break in the case.

And on Wednesday, Salt Lake City police confirmed that Mackenzie "Kenzie" Lueck sent a text to someone while she was at the airport and detectives have been in contact with that person.

Detective Michael Ruff declined to say, however, whether that person was man or woman, but said that person was not considered a suspect.

Previously, police had stated that Lueck texted her parents at 2 a.m. on June 17 when she arrived at the airport. Ruff said Wednesday that the new person police had talked to, whom she texted, was not her parents, but declined to give more details.

[...]

In conversations this week in a Facebook group discussing Lueck's disappearance, a man claimed that he had met Lueck on Tinder and that she was "looking for that type of relationship." The man went on to say the Lueck had mentioned she "wanted" to be a sugar baby and that "she needed money."

[...]

So far, police have received over 240 calls to the tip line.

Police continue to seek answers to a number of questions, including:
  1. Does Mackenzie have an alternate phone that she has used or is using?
  2. Who did Mackenzie meet in North Salt Lake City?
  3. Does Mackenzie have any social media accounts we don't know about?
  4. And is anyone in contact with Mackenzie online or by phone currently or within the last week?

He continued, “We're combing through all of that digital evidence that we have accumulated through search warrants and looking into her life.”

[...]

When Smith asked if Doubt had access to her digital history, Doubt said, “We do.”

“If you have access to her digital history, was there a moment when she said to someone else, I'll meet you in the park?” Smith asked Doubt.

“We don't have that. We don't have any of that,” Doubt answered. “We know that she was texting someone at the airport and we’re trying to follow up on that right now but with these apps nowadays that you can secure down, that are secret and you can have different identities, it's just really hard to track.”
