One million dollar reward for 20 year murder mystery

Police have offered a $1 million reward to anyone with information over the suspected murder of Janine Vaughan almost 20 years ago.

The 31-year-old went missing in Bathurst after she was seen leaving a nightclub and getting into a red car in 2001.

Her body has never been found.

Now, detectives believe new technology will allow them to test weak DNA samples in a car seized over 10 years ago.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Scott Cook tells Chris Smith they have revamped how they deal with homicide cases.

“I think over the coming months and over the coming years, you will see more and more million dollar rewards.

“We know people in the local area have more to tell us and we encourage them to come forward.”

Janine Vaughan case: Police still waiting for DNA results

FORENSIC examination of DNA samples extracted from a car linked to the abduction of Bathurst woman Janine Vaughan is still underway, with results not expected to be known to police "for some time."
He said the car which the DNA was taken from "was crucial to the investigation."
"If we get Janine's DNA in the car, if it matches it, that's a significant break through."
He said police know who the owner of the car was and will be talking to him again.

More details on who most likely is the owner of the car (from April):

"10 News First revealed exclusively on Friday that the car police seized in 2008 was a Red Renault 19 that is believed to have belonged to pharmacist Andrew Jones back in 2001 at the time Janine vanished."
(Ref: Who Killed Janine Vaughan?) <-- there is also a picture of the car.

Andrew Jones is one of three of the main POI:

"For police, there have always been three main people of interest, former police officer Brad Hosemans, local pharmacist Andrew Jones and aged care wardsman Denis Briggs, both have always denied any involvement."
(Ref: Who Killed Janine Vaughan?)

Just had time to read the latest articles and I had heard about the woman hiding behind a utility box before.

Hope something comes as a result of the dna testing.

“At Ms Vaughan's inquest, the woman gave evidence she was so frightened by the man in the car, she hid behind a utility box on the corner of William and Howick streets before running away and seeking refuge in the Shell 24 hour service station.”

Yeah, those extra details (hiding and then going to the petrol station) really tell you how frightened she was. Glad she didn't tell herself, 'you're just being silly or you're imagining it', and instead trusted her instincts.

Feeling very sorry for Janine's family. So many *advertiser censored*-ups in this case and so many rabbit holes to fall down. Her brother really nails it in the press conference:

"information given to police 18 years ago didn't get missed and we've gone through this s**t for all this time when it could have been solved, because that's what we've come back to today: the same car and the same woman on the street".
(ref: Family hopeful reward will bring answers in Vaughan case | Video)

And yes like you TootsieFootsie, I hope something comes out of these DNA tests.

Behind a paywall, this is all I can see and nothing on Pressreader yet.

Search goes on: Police still chasing leads in the Janine Vaughan case
3 hours ago - HOMICIDE detectives are continuing to investigate persons of interest in Janine Vaughan's murder, but won't speculate when DNA results from the car they believe Janine may have been in will be known.

Family of former Muswellbrook woman Janine Vaughan hoping to meet with Bathurst bar staff, patrons

THE FAMILY of missing woman Janine Vaughan are doing their own investigations into her 2001 disappearance and want to meet and talk with anyone who was at Bathurst's Tavern in George Street on the night she disappeared.

Janine's sister Kylie Spelde, of Muswellbrook, and brother Adam Vaughan regularly visit Bathurst to meet with people who have information on the case, but are reluctant to come to the police, and their Facebook page "Help Find Janine Vaughan" now has close to 4000 members.

Family's search for answers continues

Oh wow this is great news. So happy for the family.
Well done them for not giving up their quest for the truth.
Being a local I well remember a lot of what was in the papers at the time.
Some must have not panned out, like the bloody knife.

The Australian’s new Hedley Thomas podcast series The Night Driver

"Subscribers of The Australian will have first access to the series via the podcast player in The Australian app. Episodes one and two will be available to subscribers before they are released publicly. Subscribers of The Australian will always be two episodes ahead of the general public."

Wow so it's not available at first to the general public, only subscribers. That seems to be a change from previous podcasts.

Oh it is Tootsie :)

This family so deserves answers, it's been a bungled case from the get go.

As for the knife , it was thrown away without further testing

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2009-09...19Qqq7tHmVQt2y3k1wnPTAHX3HyHmBnGzpYDaxHhj9qOM

Senior Sergeant Noel Paine has told the inquest that shortly after the 31-year-old, formerly of Muswellbrook, vanished in 2001, a knife was discovered in a nursing home driveway in nearby Kelso.

The inquest heard it had apparent blood stains, had hairs attached to it and was to be checked to see if was related to Ms Vaughan's disappearance.

When asked by counsel assisting the coroner, Chris Ronalds, what happened to the knife, Senior Sergeant Paine told the court he had later been informed it was never resubmitted for further analysis and destroyed.

Nearly 20 yrs with no answers :(
