Effort to hide driver's identity in Mackenzie Lueck case, retired FBI agent says
[...]

“If that’s a friend of Ms. Lueck’s, why don’t they pick her up at the airport?” said Greg Rogers, who has worked dozens of missing persons cases in his 30 years with the FBI.

“There was some effort made to hide who that person was,” he said, adding: “You can’t go to the airport in your car and not be seen. If you pull up at the airport, your car’s there, your license plate’s tagged. There’s way too much video. You’re identified.”

Rogers, who’s not involved with the case, said Lueck must’ve communicated with the driver before they met at the park in North Salt Lake.

“That was arranged,” he said. “That didn’t just happen coincidentally, so there had to be some calls, texts, something to set that up.”

[...]

The two could have been communicating through more secretive and less common methods, Rogers said.

“You can use encrypted apps,” he said. “There’s all sorts of things you can do that are very difficult to track without having some hint about what they were using.”

Rogers said the FBI likely has five to 10 agents working side-by-side with Salt Lake City police. They tackle leads together and would have to prioritize the more than 100 calls they’ve already received from the public.

[...]

Investigators are knocking doors near the park in search of witnesses, looking through Lueck’s records, searching for surveillance video and hoping for new leads.

“They’re spending a lot of time doing anything they can do to try to identify who that driver was,” Rogers said. “There’s a reason that driver hasn’t called, and there’s a reason that driver didn’t pick her up at the airport.”

Camomile said the owner almost always wears earbud-style headphones when he is outdoors and rarely speaks to anyone. Neighbors also said they recently saw the owner burning something in his backyard and the smoke was coming into their windows.

Joseph Peterson, who lives on Marion Street, a block west of the house, said that when he got home from work about 6 p.m., he smelled “a strong stench” blowing on the breeze from the east.

“It definitely assaulted your nose,” Peterson said.

John Williamson of Fort Worth, Texas, rented the Airbnb for Wednesday. When he arrived at 9 p.m., he found the house surrounded by police and crime tape.

“It’s wild,” Williamson said. “Just wild.”
