Greek police on Friday continued its search for Dr. Suzanne Eaton, an American scientist missing in Crete since Tuesday.

Her nephew, Callie Broaddus, appealed through the social media for information regarding her whereabouts. She says that Eaton, a scientist at Max Planck, Dresden, who was in Crete for a conference, “has not been heard or seen since Tuesday afternoon.”

The American scientist was staying at the Orthodox Academy of Crete near the town of Kolymvari, west of Chania.

According to witnesses quoted by local site cretalive.gr, the 62-year-old was last seen in the surrounding area of the Academy, where the conference was held, around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. She was wearing an orange dress, which was found in her room, but her sports shoes were not found.

Broaddus believes that she may have gone on a run, “as her running shoes were not in her hotel, though unfortunately her phone is.”

Authorities and volunteers on Crete on Thursday were conducting a search for an American molecular biologist who has been missing since Tuesday, the Creta Post website has reported.

Dr. Suzanne Eaton, aged 60, was attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari in Hania, when she disappeared. She was last seen around lunchtime on Tuesday, according to the report.

Chania Police Director Paris Cinopoulos told the Athens News Service the suspect was “trying to find someone to have sex with” and selected Eaton at random when he spotted her out on her jog.

The suspect in his confession admitted to striking Eaton twice with his car and then raping her before he dumped her body in the bunker and covered the cave opening, Crete’s Police spokeswoman Eleni Papathanassiou told USA Today.

“The body had many broken ribs and facial bones and multiple injuries to both hands,” she said.

It’s not clear whether Eaton was still alive when the sexual assault occurred, police said.

ATHENS (AFP) - A 27-year-old farmer on the Greek island on Crete has confessed to raping and killing an American scientist before dumping her body in an abandoned World War II bunker, police said on Tuesday (July 16).

"The primary suspect has confessed," Crete police director Constantinos Lagoudakis told reporters.

"The motive was sexual abuse," added police press officer Eleni Papathanassiou.

A local prosecutor has charged the suspect - a married father of two, and son of a local priest - with manslaughter, rape and illegal weapons possession.

He is expected to appear in court on Friday.

There are many people who are bored and sexually dissatisfied and find other ways to entertain their issues without resorting to rape and gruesome murder. What is it with these types specifically that motivates them to commit these atrocious acts? Is it the only thing that snaps them out of their boredom and apathy? I’m still nauseous over this and the details.

And to think that a lost angry soul could take the life of such a brilliant woman who devoted her life to helping others (that is what most academic researchers do) is almost too much to take. Three similar incidents – assaults on women by a white car- in the area of Chania became known. The first attack took place a year ago, the second two months ago and the third just 20 days ago, that is around the time 60-year-old Suzanne Eaton went missing form the Orthodox Academy in Chania.

At least one woman has recognized his car.

A Polish woman has reportedly recognized Paraskakis’ car. She had reported the attack to police that a white car hit her from behind. The woman managed to get up and run into a field thus escaping a possible sexual assault. The incident took place in Kissamos.

A woman from Lithuania who was jogging was also hit by a car and managed to escape after she called for help and another jogger came to her assistance.

The third victim is reportedly a Greek woman, who was hit by a car but she was saved as there were other people in close distance.

One of the women can identify the perpetrator as he grabbed her neck.

The perpetrator is expected to testify to prosecutor of Chania on Friday, while the presence of a lawyer is not secured.

His first lawyer resigned before even reading the case file for “personal and obvious reasons,” as he said on Wednesday.

The prosecutor was expected to assign a public lawyer.
