Search in Braymer, MO underway for missing Wisconsin brothers

“BRAYMER, MO (KCTV) -- Investigators won’t say why they are searching a property in Caldwell County, but KCTV5 News did detective work and discovered it was connected, at one point at least, with a man who served federal prison time for cattle fraud.

[SBM]

KCTV5 News did comb through the court records from the 2014 cattle fraud investigation, which listed this as a place where the convicted man stored equipment, and the Diemels were not among a list of victims in that case.

[SBM]

Authorities wouldn’t say if the property they are searching is one the brothers were visiting, cautious not to impede the investigation.

Before KCTV5 News’ chopper was told to leave, we could see a large command post van, with a tent set up for investigators and a controlled burn pile still smoldering with debris, though it’s unclear if that is connected.

[SBM]

A deputy told KCTV5 News they will be actively searching through the night.

Investigators said they are limiting what they release to protect the integrity of the investigation. A case squad spokesman did say they have not made any arrests.”

“Two searches were conducted across Northwest Missouri on Wednesday afternoon in the search for two Wisconsin men who are presumed missing, but neither effort located the men.

According to Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett, seven of his deputies are participating in the multi-agency search after their help was requested Tuesday night. Sheriff Puett is also part of the search.

The exact address listed on the warrant was not immediately available Wednesday, but Puett said it was the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department that obtained the warrant.

Clinton County Sheriff Larry Fish said there was another site being searched in Clinton County near Missouri Highway 116 and State Route PP. The site is an ‘open area’ and doesn't require a search warrant.

That location is close to a small dirt commuter lot, a few hundred yards away from two gas stations. According to a press release from the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, that lot is where the brothers' rental car was found.

‘My folks are out here to work an area and do a search,’ Puett said Wednesday. ‘We're at a location out here in Caldwell county and we're gonna be out here and help them check an area.’

‘We've had folks helping from the start but this is a more aggressive response today,’ Puett said.

[SBM]

Cameron Police Chief Rick Basehor said the fact that several law enforcement agencies from across the region have pitched in to help shows how seriously police are taking the case.

‘Like I say when you see all the law enforcement coming together to follow up on all of these leads, it's being taken very seriously,’ Basehor said. ‘I think in rural areas like this, all departments look toward that.’

‘If we have some success they'll probably be able to be more forthcoming with information,’ Puett said.

[SBM]

Chief Bashor said the next media release would come when significant news was available.”

“A Braymer, Missouri, man was sentenced in federal court Monday for a cattle fraud scheme that resulted in losses of more than $262,000 to his victims.

Garland Joseph ‘Joey’ Nelson, 22, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to two years in federal prison without parole, according to Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. The court also ordered Nelson to pay $262,450 in restitution to his victims, including the USDA Farm Service Agency, Cyclone Cattle Company and individual victims. Nelson must report to the Bureau of Prisons on Monday, Nov. 21, to begin serving his sentence.

On Nov. 30, 2015, Nelson pleaded guilty to a fraud scheme using property mortgaged or pledged to farm credit agencies. Nelson engaged in a three-part fraud scheme that caused a combined loss of $262,450.

[SBM]

Nelson also schemed to remove identification from cattle that were owned by others but placed in his care to graze. Nelson removed identification tags from 646 head of cattle that belonged to others and commingled these cattle with his own and with those owned by his neighbor and landlord in order to sell livestock undetected. He sold those cattle for his own benefit, for a total loss to three victims of $124,000.” (BBM)

Just catching up with everything now. Sad to say this doesn't look like there'll be a good outcome. Hoping I'm very wrong and they're reunited with their families but I think they've either been targeted if it was known they had large amounts of cash or they stumbled on some sort of criminal activity.

Did their truck have a dashcam or any kind of tracking?

I believe the truck was a rental. Most rentals are quite new and should have GPS built in. Maybe that's why we've heard they are searching a specific ranch. They may have been able to access the GPS.

Apparently the brothers' employee was the last to speak to them, presumably on the phone (BBM):

Chupp is the last-known person to speak with the brothers, which was at 11 a.m. Sunday. Chupp said the pair were at a farm and everything seemed fine. The two had a 1:50 p.m. flight out of Kansas City's airport.

"We're just talking about the situation with the cattle and stuff like that," Chupp said.

That article is unavailable over here.
Did employee phone them or did they phone employee?
Just wondering if they were under duress during that call and 'situation with the cattle' was some sort of message?

Based on that info, they should have been leaving the farm very, very shortly I'd think.

If they were still there at 11ish, and MCI (the KC airport) is over an hour away, they'd not have much time left before they'd need to get going in order to make their 1:50 flight.

After all, not only did they need to get to the airport, get checked in, etc., but they also had a rental car to return.

Even if you just back up from the flight time 75 minutes to allow driving time, that means leaving by about 12:35. Then you figure needing to return the rental car, plus allow some wiggle room, even leaving by 12 noon would probably be tight.

And then needing to allow check-in time, etc. and getting to the gate, even if they left just after the phone call it could have been tight.

Seems like maybe something came up causing them to even be at the point of still being at the farm and on a phone call at the time you'd think they'd really have already have needed to be on the road almost.

From a story on KSHB:

"Police have to say what role the Braymer farm plays in the expanding investigation, but investigators could be seen setting up a sifting station Wednesday next to a smoldering debris pile on the property."

I wonder if they had checked in on their flight already?

Check in is available up to 24 hours ahead of time, and if they weren’t anticipating a delay they probably would have checked in, IMO.

OTOH if there was an issue that might have required them to reschedule their flight they wouldn’t have checked in. Just a thought.

It's possible that they never left the farm. Somebody might have been caught lying about it. How did their truck get to Holt?
