Converter stations

If this is correct, it means they made it almost half way on their Quest for the Bay. The
Keewatinohk converter station is almost half way between Gillam and Hudson Bay.

The work camp was part of the ground search.

Manitoba Mounties are also searching through large abandoned buildings, police said, including the Keewatinohk converter station camp that was used as a temporary work camp for Manitoba Hydro and is located roughly 90 kilometres northeast of Gillam.

OK, I think I'm missing something here, so need posters to enlighten me. I cannot find, anywhere, the manner of death of Leonard Dyck. Media was quick to report gunshot wounds to the couple, but how did Leonard die?
Good luck with that search! Don't think any details about the death were released by RCMP about the death of Professor Dyck.

I don't think they said the boat was found there. I think that converter station was just one of the locations they searched earlier this week.

What do you mean Quest for the Bay? You think they were trying to get to Hudson’s Bay on purpose?

RCMP divers will be arriving in Gillam tonight to begin searching a section of the Nelson River after a row boat was found along the shore Friday.

Inspector Leon Fiedler said it's not clear whether the boat was used by two men wanted in the killings of three people in Northern B.C.

The green-coloured boat was spotted washed up on the shore during a helicopter search of the river on Friday afternoon. The flat-bottom aluminum boat was pulled out of the area in the evening.

“It had gone through some rapids and had been significantly damaged,” Inspector Fiedler said. “We’re going to search in the area around where we found this boat just to make sure that there is nobody attached to it, whether that is our subjects or anyone else for that matter.”

[...]

The boat was located in an area known as the lower Limestone Rapids, near Keewatinoow converter station. bbm

Police did not find anything near the boat last night except for a red and white water jug.

Officers were combing through the area on Saturday, turning vehicles away from the search zone. The boat was found about 70 kilometers north of Gillam, by road, and about 13 kilometers from where the SUV that police believe the fugitives were driving was found burning in a ditch on the evening of July 22. bbm

Inspector Fiedler said police had not located the owner of the boat. The search area, he added, is challenging.

“It’s a really tricky area because of the rapids,” he said. “It’s not an area that is well-traveled by anybody by boat.”

The boat was brought to the Gillam RCMP detachment.
Police will not be able to obtain any forensic evidence from the boat, Inspector Fiedler said.

The RCMP’s underwater recovery team was expected to arrive in Gillam on Saturday night and divers were set to begin searching Sunday. The police had last scoured the area by air three or four days ago, Inspector Fiedler said.

RCMP divers to begin searching river near Gillam after finding rowboat, search for B.C. fugitives continues
Is there any chance this is the banged up boat the German tourists were using? Or was there's a canoe and this is a boat?

You might want to add July 20 - Fairview AB to the timeline as a confirmed sighting.

Manhunt suspects previously spotted in Fairview: RCMP

I'm questioning the July 20 sighting reported by this source. All other MSM reporting this gas stop sighting was July 21*.

Northern B.C. murders: A timeline of what happened and where

A timeline of events in the B.C. to Manitoba manhunt

Three people are dead in northern B.C. and there is a major search stretching across Western Canada for two young men police say are suspects. Here's a timeline of events:

July 15 - The bodies of a man and a woman are found near a blue van on the Alaska Highway, also known as Highway 97, near Liard Hot Springs, B.C.

July 17 - RCMP say the deaths are suspicious.

July 18 - RCMP announce Australian Lucas Fowler, 23, and his 24-year-old American girlfriend, Chynna Deese, are homicide victims. Meanwhile, in Jade City, B.C., Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, are spotted in a store where they stopped for free coffee. Jade City is about 350 kilometres from where the two bodies were found.

July 19 - Police announce the body of a man has been found two kilometres from a burned-out truck belonging to McLeod and Schmegelsky near Dease Lake, B.C. The two teens are missing. Dease Lake is about 470 kilometres from the first crime scene.

*July 21 - McLeod and Schmegelsky are spotted in Cold Lake, Alta., where a local resident, not knowing who they are, helps them free a stuck Toyota Rav 4 they are driving. The are also captured on security camera footage at a store in Meadow Lake, Sask.

July 22 - Mounties say Fowler and Deese were shot. They release composite sketches of a man seen speaking with the couple on the highway where they were found dead and a sketch of the unidentified man found dead near the burned truck. Fowler's father, an Australian police inspector, pleads for public help in the investigation. At the same time, band constables with Tataskweyak Cree Nation at Split Lake in northern Manitoba talk with McLeod and Schmegelsky at a checkstop, unaware of who they are. The constables see camping gear and maps in their vehicle.

July 23 - RCMP announce Schmegelsky and McLeod are suspects in the three deaths. They release photos of the men and a 2011 grey Toyota Rav 4 they may have been driving. Fox Lake Cree Nation says a burned-out vehicle is found near Gillam, Man., about 170 kilometres east of Split Lake. Police search that area.

July 24 - RCMP confirm the burned-out vehicle near Gillam is the Toyota Rav 4 the suspects are believed to have been driving. The third victim is identified as 64-year-old Leonard Dyck of Vancouver. He was also lecturer in the University of British Columbia's botany department.

July 25 - Manitoba Mounties confirm two sightings of Schmegelsky and McLeod in the Gillam area. RCMP say the sightings, along with no reports of stolen vehicles, lead investigators to believe the suspects are still in the region. They say they are investigating a photograph of Nazi paraphernalia allegedly sent by Schmegelsky to another user on a video game network. Schmegelsky is also pictured in military fatigues brandishing an airsoft rifle and wearing a gas mask.

July 28 - RCMP descend on York Landing, an isolated community southwest of Gillam, after it's reported the suspects were seen at the local dump.

July 29 - RCMP are unable to confirm the sighting and pull back to Gillam.

Port Alberni is actually considered more mid island, not really a port city. I think the "Kam grew up on a lake" comment refers to Sproat Lake, Kam's family apparently lives lakeside. No link so IMO but it was sleuthed in an earlier thread.

Port Alberni is on the longest inlet on Vancouver Island. "Gateway to the Pacific West Coast" is the motto...It is on the ocean.

I didn't know that he grew up on a lake. The Nelson River goes out to Hudson Bay and Port Nelson/York Factory area (similar destination to what the German tourists appeared to be headed to on the Hayes River) so it would be a logical destination and it's possible they thought it was easier than walking through the muskeg. Although after they got there, there would be very limited options of where they could go from there -- maybe they were just trying to get away from the RCMP and then backtrack though.

Wow. I really hope this is something. It at least indicates that maybe it's not just a random boat that floated from somewhere. I wonder where exactly it's located relative to the RAV4.

8 miles!

No, I don't think this was German tourist canoe....

What do you mean Quest for the Bay? You think they were trying to get to Hudson’s Bay on purpose?

If they find bodies where they found the boat, the river flows into Hudson Bay. They wouldn't be able to paddle upstream against the flow in their condition.

Quest for the Bay was a fascinating TV series.

How do we reconcile the two suspects taking a rowboat down the river?

They surely didn't bring the boat with them on their journey. If they stole it from somewhere along the river, you'd have to assume that place wasn't rapids like in the video or the boat never would've been there in the first place. By all means, dive away - but I don't think they drown.

I didn't know that he grew up on a lake.
<sbm> ... I wonder where exactly it's located relative to the RAV4.

Green aluminum bottom boat located about 8 miles from burned RAV4.

Kam lived on Sproat Lake.

Port Alberni rocked by national manhunt for local teens after first believing the pair was lost in the bush | The Telegram

PORT ALBERNI — The blue sky and lush greenery surrounding the chalet-style home across the street from beautiful Sproat Lake belied the pain, confusion and fear that must have been felt by the people inside.

It’s the home of 19-year-old Kam McLeod, who with his friend, 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky, is the subject of a manhunt that has now moved to remote northeastern Manitoba, almost 3,000 kilometres from where the bodies of two tourists were found on July 15 that sparked a Canada-wide search.

Set in an idyllic, rural and recreational setting, Sproat Lake is a 20-minute drive from central Port Alberni.

Sure it's at the end of a long inlet but growing up in Ucluelet, we would never consider PA "on the ocean". But OK I did just look at Wikipedia and it does refer to PA as a "deep port city" still mid island to me...
