...A dead body was discovered Tuesday morning by a hiker in Malibu Bluffs Park not far from where Park's car was found, but Brant said it was unconnected to the case.

"We were aware of that the moment it happened," he said. "Due to [the body's] location, it was certainly interesting and something we looked into immediately."

On Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, Winter cited the remains as a “John Doe,” saying the body was identified as male. An autopsy was still pending as well as several tests, though coroner’s officials were no longer investigating the site where the body was located.

“We’re done with the site, but we will be conducting the autopsy, possibly toxicology, histopathology, and positive ID,” Winter said. “We have a possible name but we won’t release it until we can confirm.”

MALIBU, CA – Sheriff's officials announced Tuesday that a man has been arrested in a case of a decomposed body found in a Malibu Park. Eduardo Ray Nunez, a 39-year-old homeless man, has been arrested by investigators and charged with murder, the sheriff's statement said.

The partially decomposed body was found in late January by a hiker in Malibu Bluff Park located at the 24200 block of Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect is being held at the Malibu/Lost Hills Station Jail with a $2 million bail, the statement continued. Officials weren't able to provide identification for the victim, and there's no information regarding cause of death.

The victim in the alleged murder that took place in Malibu Bluffs Park has been identified.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office confirmed that the “John Doe,” whose remains were found in the park in January, was Alexander Wharton. Sheriff’s officials described Wharton as a 47-year-old white man. Earlier reports indicated he was homeless at the time of his murder.

Last month, sheriff’s officials investigating the case arrested Eduardo Ray Nuñez, 39, and charged him with one count of murder.

The DA’s office said investigators have placed the date of the crime on or around Dec. 31, 2017, meaning remains were in the park for approximately one month before being discovered by a park visitor on Jan. 30 of this year.
