#• The public is asked to visit facebook.com/nema242 for updates and social media accounts of the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Prime Minister in Grand Bahama and the Ministry of Health. There will also be daily press briefings at 11am.

EF-2 tornado ripped through Emerald Isle during Hurricane Dorian, forecasters say

The tornado that ripped across North Carolina’s Emerald Isle on Thursday as Hurricane Dorian approached the coast was an EF-2, the National Weather Service said Monday.

The tornado had estimated top winds of 115 mph and left a 13-mile path about 200 yards wide on the island, forecasters said.

The tornado started as a waterspout and came onshore near the Bogue Inlet Pier, the NWS said.

“Numerous RV-style homes were tossed and rolled more than 30 feet, ripping out ground anchors that strapped them down,” the NWS said.

President Donald Trump on Monday downplayed the idea of allowing Bahamians fleeing the destruction of Hurricane Dorian into the United States on humanitarian grounds, hours after his acting Customs and Border Protection chief said it was worth considering.

"We have to be very careful. Everybody needs totally proper documentation because the Bahamas had some tremendous problems with people going to the Bahamas that weren't supposed to be there," Trump said on the White House South Lawn before departing for a campaign rally in North Carolina, where he also planned to survey Dorian damage.

"I don't want to allow people that weren't supposed to be in the Bahamas to come into the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers."

FREEPORT, Bahamas — Hurricane Dorian's wrath along the Bahamas was too gut-wrenching to ignore for workers and guests on the cruise ship the Celebrity Equinox. Instead of continuing on their regularly scheduled itinerary for a seven-day Caribbean cruise, the massive vessel set sail on a new mission: helping survivors of the storm.

On Friday, the ship's kitchen staff prepared some 10,000 meals, while guests volunteered to plate and pack them. The ship was a hive of activity as the crew pulled double-duty. Even children — tasked with writing personalized cards to cheer up the victims — pitched in.

The Celebrity Equinox, which left Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday morning to crisscross the Caribbean, was supposed to dock at the Bahamas' capital of Nassau for the tail end of its excursion. But the ship was diverted Friday to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, which was partially destroyed by the storm.

"We have a little army of cooks making food and a little navy of life boats and tug boats bringing it ashore," said Rob Zeiger, a spokesman for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the parent company of Celebrity Cruises.

Zeiger said the ship has about 3,000 guests — and more than enough food to help whip up thousands of extra meals.

I always love watching HGTV shows about people hanging up their crazy traffic filled lives, and moving to an island.
It is certainly a dream of my husband and I.
However, although this hurricane was unprecedented, the response by the Bahamian government is as well.
In the old days, we used to call governments who acted like this, a Banana Republic.
I feel awful for these good people, just living their lives, who had their lives destroyed, and the trama that they endured for days from this horrible hurrican.
The loved ones they lost. It really is horrific.
Their government's response?
I find that horrific as well.
The bahamas nation is wealthy, right behind, the USA and Great Britain.
Solely my opinion, I think that the Bahamian government waited, to see what the world would do to finance the rescues and care of their subjects.
I really do.
Money. Their money, in my opinion, matters more to them, then their subjects.
Much more.
In closing. If it walks like a duck, if it acts like a duck. It IS a duck.

I totally get that.
The Bahamas are a country. They have many unaffected places for their citizens to relocate to.

God Bless these wonderful people. I absolutely. Love them.

Carolina Waterfowl had a team along the coast waiting for Dorian to hit, Executive Director Jennifer Gordon told McClatchy news group Monday.

Partnering with local rescues, veterinarians and wildlife rehabilitators, Gordon said Carolina Waterfowl saved 109 squirrels — but that doesn’t include those who died or were euthanized because of injuries.

“Which was a lot,” she said.

The ones that survived were triaged and moved to local rehabilitation centers to make room for squirrels still arriving from the coast, Gordon said.

Rescuers have also saved hordes of bird species like songbirds and pelicans, she said, many of which were forced to follow the hurricane’s path.

Hundreds of thousands of birds were picked up in the eye of the storm using Doppler radar, according to the rescue group.

Carolina Waterfowl is asking for donations and volunteers to help with the intake of injured animals.
