Found Deceased OR - Owen Klinger, 18, University of Portland, 6 Oct 2019

Pure speculation, but my guess re: the phone is that once he had committed to his course of action, he turned his phone off to make sure that nothing/no one interrupted him.

Had he received a call from one of his parents or friends, it may have made him second-guess his decision.

OK had checked out already. He didn't want to look back.
He turned everything off, including his phone.

I do wonder what he did with that money.
He may have had something he wanted to do that night.
Maybe he wanted to go eat at an expensive restaurant, or go to a concert, or really, any number of things....

We'll likely never know the answer to the question of what he did with that money.

Tragic, needless, pointless loss of a young life full of promise.

JMO.

As a parent of a teenager I understand they don't always share what is going on in their lives. So many teenagers see no hope..and afraid to ask for help.

Yes..tragic..whatever the situation is here.

It's not a "suicide theory". It behooves people to be aware this happens, even in the best of families. Owen's parents would not have made a statement if they weren't sure it was him.

While it’s true that we may never know for sure if Owen took his own life, suicide needs to be talked about. I’ve been on many threads that turned out to be suicide...a teen, a young mother, a happily married world traveler, a man in his late ‘40’s, etc. The common denominator was depression that got beyond their ability to cope.

I learned a lot from WS members on these threads who had either had suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide and generously shared their feelings that had engulfed them. Most reached a point of utter hopelessness...feeling that the darkness would never end. And most were convinced that they were a burden to their family and that their loved ones would be better off without them. So within their distorted thinking there was an element of unselfishness. And once they had made the decision, friends who had realized they were depressed noticed that they were in a better frame of mind...not because the depression lifted but because it would soon end.

On at least one of these threads some could not accept the possibility of suicide, and even after it was conclusive, they believed it was foul play by the husband. So it’s clear that suicide is a very uncomfortable topic...either due to ignorance about depression or moral or religious beliefs.

Suicide among teens and young adults has spiked in the past decade as these articles point out. Acknowledging the problem is the first step to fixing it, whether this was Owen’s fate or not.

Suicide among teens and young adults reaches highest level since 2000

Has a cause of death been found/announced? I am getting confused as I haven't seen one and may have missed it.

No, it hasn’t. The police also haven’t released an official statement confirming that the body is Owen, but the family and university have released statements saying as much
Okay, thank you! I didn't think so but thought I missed something. This is all theory/speculation, in my own opinion, until officials make the statement.

I’m so impressed by Owen’s mother, she’s been so strong and vigilant throughout. I was researching something about suicide and one of the first things that popped up was a project with the slogan “you are loved.” I was reminded of how she kept saying that in her statements. In my eyes, she did everything so right. She trusted her instincts, didn’t buy into the train-hopping thing and re-routed the search in the correct direction. I never met him, but I pick up good energy from his family. My heart hurts for them.

I found myself interested in this disappearance because my initial reaction was he was met with foul play and still is. This thread is a series of suicide monologues which of course it could come out to be a suspected or suspicious suicide, suspicious in many homicide victims are displayed as such by their predators. Is it because he is a male? I do not remember people assuming Heather Graham or the Sugar Baby escort of clearly being suicides, but being respected as potential victims and searched for immediately by police as potential victims. The theories of train hopping or into the void really derailed finding this tall, intelligent, and handsome young man alive and well. IMO, there are far too many cases of young, highly intelligent, mindful college males, oops slipping into lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams across the USA. I feel if this was a female victim missing, the conversation would not have been so 180, for example look at that poor upset drunk Heather, she must have committed suicide for insert 50 reasons why.

But at this point, isn’t everything we’re discussing just our theories? We certainly have nothing from LE yet, so all we can do is speculate and theorize. JMO.

+1. Where I live we have a similar problem bridge that they won’t add barriers or nets to to stop the suicides. It’s gotten to a point where it’s more than ten per year and there are no helpline signs either. So many people seem to think that this is the answer to their problems, but there is SO much more life left to live and so many things worth living for. If anyone viewing this thread is in need of help or contemplating taking their own life, please call 1-800-273-8255 if you’re in the US; if you need LGBTQ specific help please call 1-866-488-7386.

Thank you for posting these phone numbers. There's also a crisis text line that is confidential - Text HOME to 741741 in the United States, or to 686868 in Canada, or 85258 in the UK.

He disappeared the night before midterms began without telling anyone where he was going and was found two weeks later downriver of a bridge notorious for suicide.

LE put out the train hopping theory for his disappearance, and I, for one, was happy to entertain it considering the alternatives.

I don’t think these theories on this thread were unfounded.

There was a report of a series of text messages and group messages (uncertain of number of participants) that occurred during the time he left and withdrew 150 dollars in cash, which i would speculate is to pay for something en-route to the supplier of unknown goods and circumstances. Most people, or at least a few persons would have come forth, if nothing to hide, would likely have jumped on the chance to come forward to help in a missing persons case investigation. I find the fact these individuals kept as crickets, complete silence for two weeks highly suspect especially in the wake of witnessing a grieving family. Untraceable burner phones, if the case, would further magnify suspicion of ill intent and harm, on top of hindering, a missing person investigation.
Do you know for a fact that none of the people on those texts have come forward to LE?
