ME ME - Portland, Fore River, AsianFem 30-50, UP15135, tattooed brows, $500, 'Bride' sweatshirt, May'15

The clothes look like normal middle class Asia to me (based on living in Asia and having multiple sisters-in-law who dress in this style: hubby’s sisters). For example short stockings under pants are really common even in the heat in Asia (‘stockings’ being the term for knee-high hose with elastic tops, not sex-worker-style suspenders-and-stockings).

Also tattooed eyebrows are popular in certain communities but not in others: Korean, Japanese, some Chinese communities such as those in Malaysia and Hong Kong (not sure about the mainland itself). I’m sure there are others that I’ve not frequented.
I really hope that this young lady shows up some decent matches on GED eventually - after all it just takes one really close match, right?!

I read back but couldn’t see that isotopes had been done - does anyone else know if there is a report?

I could be wrong, but I don't believe isotopes were done. I don't recall hearing or reading about her being tested.

I could also be mistaken but I don't remember seeing Maine do isotope testing on any of their UIDs. I think they tend to put it in the media (I remember reading about this when it happened), sketches, and now DNA Doe. I hope they are able to identify her. Someone is missing her.

I don't recall them ever doing any isotopes here, either, but I'm so glad they've jumped on the DDP wagon. I really want them to approach another group who takes on child cases about the newborn they found up north in the 80s.

It might be for the best that they don't do isotopes... they can be inaccurate and misleading sometimes. If this doe was raised primarily in another country, but the area she lived in has very similar water/food to an area of the states, they might think she's from that area instead of outside of the US, which could lead them off the trail so to speak. Isotope analysis isn't useful for cases where the doe might be from outside of the US... the world is a huge place and isotope results will be different in each country, even inside each country. China is huge! And think about how many different water types Russia must have. I doubt LE in the US has easy access to isotope comparison from outside the US. I think I remember that the Isdal Woman had isotopes done and it said she'd spent time in Wales, but it was more likely that it was a place in mainland Europe (German/French border area) that simply had similar water. I think DNA Doe project is the best chance this doe has as well as getting her recons out there. Someone knows who she is. Someone must be missing her. I hope she can return to her loved ones soon.

To add, Portland Jane Doe is one of the 10 'sample' does that DNA Doe Project put up on their google drive (link is in the pinned update post on their facebook page). This shows how many matches the doe has, how many of these are over 30cM (for context 30cM is around 5th cousin, I have 51 matches over 30cM on ancestry and I have no idea who most of them are. My 3rd cousin once removed is 67cM) how many cM the top match is, and the percentage of matches they can't see because people haven't opted in.

Portland Jane Doe has the fewest matches of these 10 at only 223, she only has one match above 30cM, which is also her top match at just 32.4cM. She has 2607 total matches but DNA Doe Project can only see 223, meaning DNA Doe Project cannot see 91.4% of her matches. This is the highest percent of those ten does. Though Vernon County Jane Doe, Charlotte Jane Doe and Apache Junction Jane Doe all have zero matches above 30cM, so at least Portland Jane Doe has something going for her. It'll take time but I believe they'll find her name some day.

This UID’s single match seems to have disappeared off the spreadsheet though there is still mention in the ‘top match’ at 39.7. I’m guessing someone uploaded data to GEDMatch and then went in later and ‘opted out’ of LE visibility. But hopefully the spreadsheet just has a glitch... I may head over to the general DDP thread and ask about that scenario....

Back down to 32.4 as the top match; a lot of people seem to taking off the law enforcement permission from their files. Let's hope they have better luck with this UID over at FTDNA.

Some Hong Kong females have tattooed eyebrows, but they don't tend to wear pantihose under pants. From the descriptions, my bet is a mainland Chinese female. The 'trendy' type who still remembered a less well-off time in her life. The 'bride' English wording might not even mean anything to the deceased. Just some word in English.

Her Admixture report doesn't add much to the debate given that East Asian category includes all the countries previously discussed here, China, Japan, the Koreas. Siberia is in Russia so this opens up the possibility she could be Russian of Asian descent. Many people in Russia look Asian. But the clothing just smacks to me like someone from more traditionally Asian community.
Sadly she has only added 1 or 2 distant relatives in the past few months.

Is there a link to the report? I am afraid I can't find it.

But having read the Namus listing in full, including the photos of her clothes and accessories, I am rethinking my speculation. The jewellery is too retro in style to be preferred by mainland Chinese, IMO

On DNA Doe Project's FB page they have a link to their spreadsheet (in the top post, you click just above the 4 photos) where they regularly update the numbers for all their cases. The spreadsheet is the first link under 'Cases'. The Admixture line is a recent addition. They are also gradually adding Oracle 4 reports but have only done a few so far.

Has NamUs #MP3957/Tomoko Ioh ever been looked at or ruled out?

This one has bugged me for years and after finding this website I'm hoping someone here will be able to help.
A woman was found in the water in the Old Port of Portland in 2015 (for those unfamiliar with Portland, ME, the Old Port is where all the bars are and where tourists are generally). She is Asian, between 30-50 years old, 5' 1", 99 lbs. I'll attach the NamUs link, there are no graphic photos but there are composite sketches that may be helpful as well as clothing details. She was found with $500 cash on her.
The going theory in Maine is that she was being trafficked which is why no one reported her missing (Mainly because of the large amount of cash on her combined with no one reporting her missing. If she had been a tourist there would likely have been a report.). Maine has an issue of women who are being trafficked being brought from out of state to Portland or Freeport for a weekend then taken back to where they live, so I suspect that might have been the case here and she is actually from a surrounding state.

Does anybody know if there's a casino in Portland Old Port? Thinking that would be another reason to be carrying a fair amount of cash. Either winnings, or the amount she had to play with.

The only Maine Casinos I know of are Bangor and Oxford, however, there used to be gambling cruises which sailed out of Portland. Nova Star went from Portland to NS and had slots, electronic poker, and black jack. 2015 was their last year sailing out of Portland, but I don't think they operated in May, though. Wiki states their season was June 1st to October 14th. I'm not aware of any other gambling boats at that time.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of any in the area, but since I'm not a casino-type person, that doesn't mean much. :D
