Deadly Bushfires in Australia, 2019/2020

People are suffering and there's politics brought into this? Why? No response needed, I'm not in a good frame of mind to continue in this thread with finger pointers who are not impacted by these fires and want to push an agenda. Such a damn shame. :(

My apologies Prime.

Geez, mother natures not leaving anyone out with these fires :(

Nullarbor evacuation underway after bushfires force closure of WA-SA border

Nullarbor evacuation underway after WA fires on Eyre Highway left hundreds stranded

A large-scale evacuation effort is underway along a 710-kilometre stretch of the Eyre Highway to rescue travellers and truck drivers stranded in Western Australia's south-east by massive bushfires.

Key points:
  • The fires left more than 300 people stranded at Eyre Highway roadhouses
  • Some of those who are trapped are being escorted west to safety
  • Authorities say the danger isn't over and conditions may worsen this week

Authorities are making use of a brief window of opportunity to move people from Caiguna along the highway to Norseman at the western end of the Nullarbor Plain, and then on to Esperance, as fires continue to burn across the region.

More than 300 people had been left stranded at roadhouses along the major east-west artery after roads including the main highway between WA and South Australia were closed for bushfires on New Years Eve.

A 71-year-old man has become the eighth person confirmed dead in the NSW south coast bushfires, since December 30.

The man was last seen on New Year's Eve moving equipment on his property in Nerrigundah, south-west of Moruya, NSW Police said in a statement.

"Police and rescue units have been unable to access this area for a number of days due to the fire risk," NSW Police said in a statement.

Crews were able to access the property on Monday and found the man's body at about 4pm.

He was found between the property and a car, which were both burnt out.

:(:(:(:(

RIP

The heavens have reluctantly opened, bringing a few millimetres of rain to the scorched south-east, but authorities say it can actually hinder their efforts to fight bushfires.

Key points:
  • A cool change has brought temporary relief for the fire-ravaged south-east, but rain can hamper firefighting efforts
  • Rain can prevent back-burning, making it harder to build control lines and lead to patchy burnt areas that can flare up again
  • For rain to extinguish the fires, it will require inches of steady falls over an extended period

I agree. My entire property other than our house was destroyed in the recent fires. Every time I turn on the TV or read a newspaper someone is pushing a political agenda blaming someone else for these fires. No one in my community gives a $&*@ about should have/could have/would have. We all just want to get down to business and rebuild what we have lost. Finger pointing is the last thing on our minds.

It seems to me that the people pushing agendas aren’t the people directly impacted by the fires. It really is a damn shame.

I am so sorry to hear about your property, Cleaver. I can't imagine how you and your community are feeling right now. And I can see how some affected by the fires would be feeling exactly the same as you, that finger pointing is the last thing on your mind. But in some communities it is front of mind, as seen in not just media reports but specifically media footage, directly from the mouths of people in affected communities. And I've heard it directly from family members who are farmers, but not currently impacted (thank goodness). Their feelings and reactions are just as important as yours and your community's, just different reactions to a terribly traumatic experience. The topic is being debated whether we contribute or not.

I just think that although there are some on here and other forums, social media, news websites, etc (including myself) that express things that are not how you are feeling right now, you shouldn't take this as any reflection on how much empathy we have for your current experience. But as long as it remains respectful and within the purpose of this thread, we should all (those affected directly and indirectly, which every Australian is) have the space to vent, discuss, debate where appropriate. Just like we do on the crime threads.

I know I have irritated some with my previous posts, but my opinions are not meant to detract from your feelings or what you or others want to discuss on here. Please know that.
Take care and I hope you get all the help you need to recover and rebuild.

‘Ultimate betrayal’: RFS volunteer charged with starting seven bushfires

A Rural Fire Service volunteer has been arrested and charged with lighting a series of bushfires on the state’s far south coast.

Seven fires have been deliberately lit in the Bega Valley area over the last five weeks.

The Financial Crime Squad’s Arson Unit have been investigating the fires in conjunction with RFS fire investigators and local police.

At about 5.20pm on Tuesday, officers saw observed a man sitting in a dual cab ute next to the Bega River.

Shortly afterwards, investigators noticed smoke and a pile of trees and grass on fire.

Later that night, police attended a fire shed at Tarraganda and arrested a 19-year-old man.

He’s alleged to have lit the fire and left the area before returning in his role as volunteer RFS firefighter.
I don't believe he should ever be let out if jail

Lake Macquarie man refused bail on charges relating to deliberate lighting of 12 fires

Chad Joseph Musgrave, 33, is charged with 12 counts of intentionally or recklessly damaging property by fire.

Police allege he set fire to four cars, multiple mattresses, rubbish and a skip bin between November 7 and 20 in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Windale.

The court also heard Mr Musgrave was his mother's carer and there was no-one else to assist her.

Firefighter Andrew O'Dwyer killed battling bushfire farewelled at emotional funeral - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A volunteer firefighter who died when his truck rolled while fighting a major blaze south west of Sydney has been remembered as a selfless father with an "unbelievable" love for his brigade.

Andrew considered his greatest achievement his 19-month-old daughter Charlotte, Mr O'Dwyer said, who he loved madly along with his wife Melissa.

Mr O'Dwyer was posthumously awarded the Commissioner's commendation for extraordinary service and bravery — the highest accolade that can be given to NSW firefighters.

The 36-year-old was also a talented photographer who used an Instagram account to show the world his brigade.

Brigade Captain Darren Nation said the young father relished being a mentor and trainer.

"The love he had for the fire brigade was as thick as the blood that ran through his veins," Mr Nation said.

Well said Strangeworld. I totally agree.

I think this thread is very balanced, of course people are going to "discuss" our current, ongoing, on a scale of never seen before in australia, with ADF reserve brigades being "called out" for the first time for this disaster.
