"Neil Peart, the drummer of iconic Canadian band Rush, has died at age 67.

The influential musician and lyricist died Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., after having been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to a statement issued Friday by family spokesperson Elliot Mintz.

His death was confirmed by Meg Symsyk, a media spokesperson for the progressive rock trio comprising Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.

Along with penning impressive lyrics, Peart was renowned for his proficiency on drums and expertly weaving together techniques from different musical genres, blending jazz and big band with hard rock.

After the Hamilton, Ont.-born, St. Catharines, Ont.-raised Peart joined bandmates Lee and Lifeson in 1974, his virtuoso drumming helped lift Rush to new musical heights. The band attracted a loyal, worldwide fanbase, sold millions of records and influenced a multitude of rock musicians with its complex, literary music. "

:(

This is a total shock. I know we all have expiration dates, but this was way too soon, and from such a cruel disease. RIP, Neil.

''A week after confirming the death of their longtime bandmate Neil Peart, Canadian rock icons Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush thanked fans and supporters for an “outpouring of love” in a new heartfelt message.

The message was shared to Lee’s official Instagram account on Friday along with a variety of images of the late drummer.

Alongside Lifeson, 66, the Tom Sawyer singer wrote: “Our most heartfelt thanks go out to family, friends, musicians, writers and fans from around the globe for the incredible outpouring of love and respect for Neil since his passing.”

“These touching tributes help to lessen the pain of this terrible loss and remind us all to celebrate his remarkable life and our connections to it,” the duo wrote.''

Rush’s Alex Lifeson says Neil Peart’s death has left him unmotivated to play music
''In a rare and unlikely interview, Alex Lifeson, the guitarist of former Canadian rock trio Rush, has spoke about the passing of former bandmate Neil Peart and ultimately how it’s affected his life.

The 66-year-old revealed that not only has he “played very little guitar” since Peart died, but that he no longer feels “inspired” or “motivated” to make new music or go out on stage again.''

''Reiterating his feelings of a lack of motivation, the guitarist concluded: “I don’t know if the motivation is there for us to really do anything now. We’re certainly proud of our track record, and we still love music. But it’s different now.”

No matter where I went online, I never saw one negative thing said about Neil, or Rush. Even people who said they couldn't stand the band's music were respectful.

''The city of St. Catharines, Ont., is naming a local pavilion after late Rush drummer Neil Peart and considering other ways to honour his legacy.''

''It's "a fitting, fitting name for an amazing individual who has done so much for music, not just here in Canada but around the world."

A tribute concert for Peart, A Night for Neil, was scheduled for May 16, but has been moved to Oct. 17 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
