Crews focus search for missing Wells businessman around Neches River

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) began an active search for Danny Wayne Carter on Wednesday night near the Neches River.
“We had a DPS helicopter out of Houston that came the down before yesterday,” said Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell. “Parks and Wildlife has been going up and down the river with a sonar. And a lot of volunteers.”
The newest arrival to join the search team for Danny Carter is a cadaver dog. It’s a grim, but necessary, decision on the fourth day of this search, Campbell explained.

But the search isn’t over. This day East Texas law enforcement, Texas Rangers, game wardens, and volunteers were ferried across the Neches River into Houston County to the same spot where a friend dropped Carter off Sunday night.
“He was going hog hunting. That’s what he was doing, just about dark, so I believe he had a rifle," Campbell said.
The rifle hasn’t been found, but what’s believed to be Carter’s cap was discovered near a river bend. Sonar found nothing, but dive teams may be called in on Monday.

Around a campfire, those who know Carter share talk of how the man is so familiar with the family deer lease and the river that runs through it.

“We don’t suspect any foul play. We’re just trying to find him," Campbell added. “He could be in the river; he could’ve walked off somewhere and got injured, whatever.”
Campbell said search teams would not likely continue looking on Saturday or Sunday, but that Monday the sheriff’s office would have access to a dive team.
