I haven't latched on to that theory. Although it's not impossible. One thing, I am highly doubting is all this talk that it's basically like the flu?
The Chinese government's current response to this, tells me it's not like a flu.
What I really want to know is what is the real mortality rate.
I'm personally not worried about contacting this.
I sure do feel sorry for those 50 million people in China on lockdown though.
I also do not believe the Chinese government at all.
I'm hoping that our President doesn't either.
I don't think he does because he's now asking 20 airports to screen for infected passengers, when yesterday it was only 3 airp

I think any government in this situation is darned if they do and darned if they don't. If the Chinese government hadn't taken this hardline response within Wuhan and Hubei, then the virus would have spread faster and all their air traffic could have been banned by other countries.

It's not a good thing to have any cases anywhere, but as there are cases now outside China we will see what the mortality rate is in other nations.

The American president also has to strike a balance between the minimum CDC and other advisers say is called for, and the minimum that the population/voters want to see, and both of those need to be countered by the adverse effects of any decision. It's not easy for them, and it's a lot easier to be a backseat driver/armchair quarterback, so there'll often be a lot of flack for whatever decisions they do make.

I went to Lowes tonight with a friend prior to going out to dinner and then grocery shopping.

I was behind a young woman who appeared Asian who was buying about 50 face masks that we have been talking about. I was flippant, and asked if she bought out the entire stock. She said "yes, to send to my family".

I was taken aback by my flippant callous remark which had a simple response which resulted in a come to Jesus moment. Truly really in shock thinking about all that we here have discussed.

I felt shame, guilt, true sadness to the core.

I went to dinner with my friend and then we went grocery shopping.

5 minutes into grocery shopping I was bawling my eyes out alone in the cleaner isle, hiding my tears from everyone while I broke down crying.

God bless those affected. We may not here faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away be affected yet by the virus, but yet we indeed ARE and can be at the micro level of person to person.

...................back to normal WS...............after I quit crying ........... I cannot seem to stop even when home now.

If I could turn back the clock, I would have purchased all of the face protections that she had.

Ive been looking at the numbers from a variety of sources to see if we can tell if we are getting accurate figures and I think I found a way to tell within 2 weeks.

Math and statistics are not my strong point but here is what I was thinking about.

Beginning with some news sources that generally say this....

"Chinese health authorities confirmed Tuesday that the coronavirus outbreak had infected 4,515 people, with 106 reported deaths. It means the virus has killed just over 2% of those that have been infected."

Coronavirus vs. SARS: Health experts on the key differences between the two outbreaks

Here is what Im thinking would tell us something in 2 weeks time. JMO of course.

It gets confusing so I could be off with this thinking.

Was looking at the released numbers from a variety of news sources and if we go with an "R0 factor" of 2.5, it would mean for every person that catches it, it is likely to be passed on to 2.5 other people. The other thing that we have to take into consideration is not all die, so we have to take into account the mortality rate as well.

And, thirdly, if we take into consideration the 2 week incubation period and we already have around 100 known deaths right now. That means these 100 people were infected at least 2 weeks ago. Which further means that we can expect an almost double number of people being infected but only 2% of that additional number should die. So if the number of deaths in the next 2 weeks lets say increases to 300 or so, then something is off with what we are being told.

The number of deaths should only go up by 2% of the expected double increase of cases based on the R0 factor. We have around 4500 cases and so lets say in 2 weeks it is claimed as 9000, then 2% of the additional 4500 =
(0.02 X 4500) = 90 new deaths expected in about 2 weeks.

If we see more than that, then that means something is off with what we are hearing like either the "R0 factor of 2.5" is off, or the mortality rate is off, or we are not getting accurate information or some combination of these.

Fab post! I was working through some similar problems earlier and trying to consider things like the various lag times between contracting to symptoms to diagnosis to final conclusion (recovery or demise).

I would love access to more in depth figures than are on the excellent John Hopkins site Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS

I would like to know things like the dates of onset of symptoms for each of the non-China patients. What is the average length of time that they're taking to classify a patient as 'recovered'?

I'd like to see a chart of daily figures for confirmed cases and deaths for each province in China as well as for countries outside China.

I guess some of these figures might be available online at more specialist sites?

We also have to bear in mind that in China right now there are likely to be some days where they have a reporting delay in getting test kits through and that might make for apparently big rises on some days and dips on other days.

That is a touching story and I'm sure many of us can relate - to us, right now, it's just a news story. It's easy to forget the people behind the numbers.

I'm glad you shared this with us.

Okay. True story. Here's what we're dealing with.
Alameda County (CA) 4 days ago was testing two persons for the virus. A relative's grand-daughter lives there, and, yes, it is a very, very populated ares. But, she goes to school with many Chinese students.

So, my relative had plans to pick her up and take her to Nevada for a week. The grand-daughter had no symptoms, but.... but... but...

Things will probably be fine, but this just shows how easily a virus can spread.

The scariest thing about this virus, is that it is spread, airborne. Like a cold or the flu. Does anyone else find it ominous that China is more than happy to accept help from the World Health Organization and the CDC?

I would be interested to know the ages of the folks dying. It was very interesting to see the hazmat gear on the folks who were at the hospital. Full quarantine suits.

A paper mask isn't gonna make a difference here.

A paper mask might help if someone is infected, to help keep germs from spreading. Not sure it helps much if someone sneezes in your face, though.

Also might be helpful in the sense that when you wear one, you're might likely to remember to practice good hygiene (cover sneezes, wash hands, etc.).

I feel gratitude for health-care providers who really are on the front lines.

''As China continues to battle a growing coronavirus epidemic, Hong Kong has bowed to pressure and closed its borders to reduce the flow of people coming in from the mainland.''

Sorry, what are you talking about?
The CDC has been offering their help to China since January 6th.
China has not responded to their offer.

Starbucks Closes More Than 2,000 Stores In China Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
January 28, 20207:28 PM ET
''Starbucks executives on Tuesday called the viral outbreak a "very complex situation," adding that the company closed its locations in China at the direction of local government officials as well as "proactively," to limit the spread of the virus among workers and customers.''

''China is a key, fast-growing market for Starbucks and many other companies that are starting to see an impact from the outbreak and the measures that Chinese authorities have imposed in response, including a lockdown of multiple cities with tens of millions of residents.

Other chains such as McDonald's and KFC have also been closing stores. McDonald's is expected to share an update on Wednesday when it reports its quarterly earnings. Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday that his company has closed one of its retail stores.

"Many of the stores that remain open have also reduced operating hours," Cook said. "We're taking additional precautions and frequently deep-cleaning our stores as well as conducting temperature checks for employees."
I think that China is more worried about their economy, then their citizens.

As should every other country, until we know what's really going on.
The world does not need a pandemic.
Until China let's in experts and doctors from other countries who can access the true nature of what's going on that would cause China to lock down over 50 millian people, all countries should stop flights from China.

Hope I can help out a little from my biochem degree. I learned years ago that the scientific field is quite a bit different from other fields that are competitive for discoveries. Typically in the scientific community, all of even the smallest discoveries are shared among most countries in a quick fashion in major scientific journals. So science is very open to sharing everything learned so our world is helped for major discoveries. It really is amazing how they work together. Ebola kills quickly, so the virus dies with the host and tampers the spread of such a deadly pathogen. Been around for years and known. But due to modern day air travel, can spread far. Doctors, scientists and techs volunteer to work with these known deadly pathogens. They are our heroes. They leave their families and friends and countries to join efforts to shut down epidemics in countries where the culture may not understand, may get angry with them or not even have basic meds or supplies to help. Their willingness to fight a fight for everyone at such grave consequences is a true calling. They are heroes. Truly. We are lucky if we live in cultures with advanced meds and information at our fingertips. A jump from species to species is not believed to be common. But rabies has been around for years.. Our world is amazing. Species generally stick together. A robin hangs with another robin while a cardinal only goes with another cardinal if you get my drift. But something happens, like the bird flu or the swine flu, and even though this one sounds ominous and may be....trust in your brave scientists that I know are doing the fastest and best work to figure this out and doing it together. The brightest minds move ahead of the pack. Our world, with all its difficulties that we see daily, has unsung heroes in research labs all over the world that conference and meet. Good people at their best. And it does sound that labs are in full gear working on this.

"Coronavirus", I think that I had something like that, after drinking too much beer...:p
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article239733143.html
''Google searches for “Corona Beer” and “Corona Beer Virus” are both up significantly in the last week, when the first cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the U.S.

The confusion may not be solely from searchers, as Google itself may lead people to this unfortunate mix up. When typing “corona” into Google, “corona beer virus” is the second option the search engine predicts.''
