Coronavirus COVID-19 *Global Health Emergency* #7

If the virus can re-infect someone almost immediately upon recovery, that’s bad enough. But the last statement:

“Tierno said much remains unknown about the virus. "I'm not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax," he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.”

This is implying that recovered folks aren’t actually recovered at all. Basically saying the virus goes dormant, and then
re-emerges at a later time.

Yes, that is the greatest fear is that some
#1 don't create antibodies and can either harbor and come back out (e.g. shingles does for us old folks) or
#2 this virus doesn't create long lasting antibodies (devastating to all MOO) or
#3 that the folks are immunocompromised or too elderly and cannot create antibodies. Yet the folks this happened with are not in this category, which is perhaps the best of all choices? Anyone else have ideas to other options?

Health folks need to let us know this answer sooner than later MOO

While there are no cases presently within my City I have stopped going to my cardio/weights class. I just don't want to be where multiple people congregate, sweat and handle weights. I'm sure I would touch my eye/nose even tho I am really trying to be conscious of not doing it.

I had a bad feeling yesterday and cancelled yoga which is rare. Was really upset about it but it was just causing me too much anxiety, the thought of...

I would like to talk further about this. What do I (we) do, we can’t just stop our lives when there is no known transmission in our own area, right? It feels wrong and over the top for me to have cancelled, but then again...

I am thinking about going today but not until I catch up here on more of the USA business.

Please advise if I should go to yoga or not JK.

ETA: I'm sure people are rolling their eyes reading this. I’m seriously not trying to sound like an alarmist.

First-world problem:

If they shut down the community swimming pool and weight / treadmill room and I am at home quarantined with tons of carbs and no fresh veggies......

I guess I should have just bought the Peleton, anyway.

I'm not sure how to handle this. I too go to a gym regularly and use the equipment. I also attend several yoga classes per week and confess to have a (at the moment minor) fear about laying on the floor as well as being around other people who use the same blankets, bolsters, blocks...

I'm thinking to wait until a community contagious case turns up in my area...but then I don't want to be me. Paranoia vs common sense awareness. Tough choice.

I just posted the same dilemma. I love yoga! Guess there's always self practice.

I wonder how the anti-vaxxers will respond if a vaccine is made available. (I have some in my family with small kids.)

Same as they did with MMRP (measles/mumps/rubella/pertussis..do I have that right) and flu and other vaccines? "It won't affect me"... due to herd immunity as other have already done it?

Been following this thread religiously and so appreciate all of you. I have been consumed by this as I have bad asthma and propensity for chest/lung infection. I ordered masks at the onset and have 10 simple n95 masks. I gave to my sister and mother. No cases where I live but my twin sis and I are supposed to go to casino and spa tomorrow for our birthday. We planned a while ago as we have a real birthday this year Feb 29th lol. Now I’m dreading it and not sure if I should cancel or if I am ridiculous.

FYI I tried to order expensive masks from Amazon yesterday. Everything went through and I was charged but then got email saying order canceled out of stock. This keeps happening. My question is how many masks do we need?? Are you all expecting to remain in your homes? At what stage will you make the decision? When someone is infected in your neighborhood? Thank you in advance for your thoughts

I only have a handful of N95 masks leftover from fire season. I have a large family, so it just didn’t seem realistic for me to try to scramble to find more- because they are single use, and realistically we’d have to have hundreds for my whole family wear one anytime we go out.

So my plan is that we have our few on hand in case we are cooped up/quarantined in the house and the person who may need to leave to go to store, etc, will have a mask to wear out in public.

I listened to the WHO press release. In light of what has happened in CA with this latest case being untraceable to a known infection...

I really felt like as Dr T. was articulating what countries need to be ready to do (lots of testing, move quickly, protect health care workers, etc) that the US has absolutely fallen flat on most (or all) of his points.

I’m so disappointed in our country’s lack of a response. I can see absolutely no excuse.

finally, non politically, I was really hoping the person to spearhead this response would be someone with experience in pandemics/infectious disease/something. I don’t know that our VP quite fits that criteria.

BBM

1000%. I’ve really been struggling with my anger about this the past 24 hours. It’s never good to be consumed with anger so I’m going to have to find a way to manage that....

Me too. I’m constantly accidentally touching my face. But I’m always very paranoid about what I touch and people coughing or sneezing around me. If I touch a surface I physically feel it on my hands until I wash them. And if anyone is coughing or sneezing I run. Because with asthma a “mild” cold can be a month of illness.

the other day my husband and went to Walmart to purchase a flat
screen TV. Unfortunately the sales person that assisted us was coughing
her head off--- we got away fromher as fast as possible and left tne
store with no TV--- we wound up buying a TV at Best Buy-- that woman's
coughing cost Walmart a sale. For several days i worried about getting
sick-- i didnt get sick, but like you i have asthma so i try really hard not
to be around sick people-- i wash my hands many times a day

Another thing to consider is if people who have symptoms and have no or minimal health insurance will respond to the need to self report. This article has some concerning points along those lines.

The significance of the Miami man who feared he might have coronavirus

I live in one of the poorest counties in Texas. I live in a tiny rural town, population 1400.(Bad ignorant decision on DH's part and mine to reluctantly go along with it after living in So. CA) Anyway, so many people are uninsured here or have insurance that they cannot afford to use and it has me worried that if COVID-19 infects a person here many people that have symptoms will not seek medical care. Our nearest hospital has closed down. The next nearest hospital is 24 miles away. Years ago, I went to a doctor at the next town over and there was a sign at reception that stated if a PT does not have insurance or cash payment in full, they would not be seen. WTF! There is one urgent care that recently opened.in my town. Plus, some people do not have cars, so what are they supposed to do to travel to be checked out. (Wherever that might be.) Rant over!

Yes! Go to yoga! I’m going today as well. I have to find ways to deal with my immense anger towards the way the US and my local community has dropped the ball (JMO) on this virus!

Use your own mat (don’t rent one), and if you use anything like balls or blocks wipe them down with a Clorox wipe :) Then wash hands well afterwards.

MOO.

I’m hoping people will understand and comply! Hadn’t thought of that. We are Americans. Not an easy bunch to corral. And lots of paranoid people too.

Yeppppp. I’ve been alluding to this for a couple days now. Moo. I believe my exact words were “I can see total hell breaking loose”, but again, hate to sound like an alarmist...

I think once we hear of cases nearby it’s time to shut it down. But until then I’m not going into crowded areas unless I have to.

In what way? How can we lock down a whole nation?

I believe it was speaking to draconian measures as to isolation of areas with an outbreak as to the lockdown, not locking down an entire nation. It's analagous to neigborhoods or areas of cities which had a cluster.. (egads, or entire cities like Wuhan).

I've never heard anyone even mention that an entire nation was locked down MOO

Italy, South Korea, China have done such.

ETA: Catching up and see that you have asked how that works. When they see epidemic in one hood or community or city perhaps... they put it on lockdown (similar to what you were referring to that an entire nation might do) They concentrate to push back on the virus and contain it. HTH

magz you can always do your yoga from home. Lots of video online. That's what i have been doing.

You mean like all my other exercise machines sitting around that I use to pile clothes on? You know, those late night informercials that suck me in every time...ab roller this, treadmill that...I need forced exercise in a class LOL

Time to maybe change my ways I suppose. You are right. @Herat mentioned also it’s a good time to bust out the exercise DVDs, right Herat?

I hear you. Medical insurance is all over the place in this country and sounds like you are very aware of that. Maybe a bright side to this will be the recognition of that and the potential to do something to make it better. I can always hope.

U.S. stock markets see 6th day of loses on coronavirus concerns

Stocks were working on a sixth straight day of losses Thursday, extending a streak that has lopped more than $2 trillion from equities amid growing fears about the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus live updates: New coronavirus case may be 1st sign of "community spread" in U.S.
I am not a market expert, but sheesh, it sure seems like it might be better for the markets if the US acted like it had a clue and was taking more measures to control the spread and test for it!! (MOO MOO). (And that’s not intended to be political)

I would guess a lot of the financial fears reflected in the markets right now is due to uncertainty- which is exacerbated by the current bizarre US medical response (MOO MOO).

Rant over. For now. (Don’t worry, I’m heading to yoga soon...)
